My mom had one of his albums.

I played it at the age of 12 and went ... WTF?!?

I later learned to love it.

RIP.

I never really got into sitar music, but was glad that The Beatles helped him and Indian music gain a world-wide audience. Another musical genius that influenced so many other musicians. Even legendary jazz/.prog guitarist John McLaughlin was smitten with the music, hence his excellent group Shatki, a mix of east meets west, but mainly west joins east. He will never be forgotten. And yes, India has lost a national treasure. RIP

:( His profound influence (due, of course, largely to George Harrison) opened untold ears to new and different sounds and scales world-wide. Perhaps he helped push progressive rock forward in some ways -- pretty freaking cool. He led a fantastic life I'd imagine; RIP Ravi Shankar.

I interviewed Ravi Shankar a few times. Here's an appreciation. http://wp.me/pgATL-1PV

Listened to "Three Ragas" this morning after hearing about his death. Used to meditate to that all the time in high school. That was the first album of his that I heard back around 73-74. Borrowed a friends copy and then went out and got my own and I've been accumulating his material on CD and LP ever since. RIP Ravi. He left a lasting impression.

Rest in peace, Ravi Shankar. Words can't say how important your music has been to me all these years.

I first heard him on "The Concert for Bangladesh" that George Harrison put on. I was restless in my seat, then I started listening to it closely (since there wasn't anything better to do). I became mesmerized, and began internalizing all the weird scales and such that I was hearing for later. It opened my ears and became an influence on me.

RIP. You touched a lot of people, and were a great ambassador for your people. I don't contribute to RIP threads much, but your soul touched mine, and I learned something. Thanks, and you'll be missed.
