View Full Version : Is there a way to turn off Auto Save?

That feature is making me crazy - should be called Auto Wait. It's a good idea, but I'm too impatient, and I always copy my posts just in case anyway, before actually submitting them.

Why is it driving you crazy, and why would you want to turn it off :huh

Just ignore it. It's there for an important reason.

Yeah, I'm kinda' on the same page as Duncan, here... Unless you're on working on a museum relic from the 1980's, auto save should be sorta' useful. no?

Lemme 'splain why you WANT Auto-Save:

Content auto-save is like an emergency parachute – it automatically saves your content so that it can be restored in the event that things go very wrong.

Imagine this scenario. You’ve sat down to write a really long reply to a thread. Like a mad composer, you are banging away on the keyboard typing away furiously; your words and ideas are flowing freely into the editor. In an unfortunate twist of cruel fate your foot kicks the power outlet and unplugs your computer. Your computer shuts down as you begin to panic – the panic slowly transforming into agonizing rage.

Well, there is good news! Progressive Ears automatically backs up your work every 30 seconds. You curse the skies, successfully reboot your computer and navigate back to the page where you were writing the content, click the “Restore Auto-Save” button and magically – your masterpiece is now restored. Nothing has been lost!

Do you still want to get rid of it?

Nah - didn't think so ;)

Not to change the topic but I wish there was a way to turn of that "hover" feature. You know, where you hover your mouse pointer over the thread title and you see a preview of the first post? Damn I hate that. Why? Because the "preview" won't f***ing go away. You have to wait until it fades away on it's own. It's intrusive, annoying, and useless. And I bet I'm not the only person that thinks this. I'd bet a week's pay I'm not the only one ;). But it's a minor complaint. I can live with it. If I could turn it off I would, but I'm not gonna bother the admins to re-write code for something that minor.

I like that feature. You can check pretty quickly what the thread is going to be about without having to open it up. Lots of threads are only of vague interest and this feature is the decider for me if I'm going to bother opening them at all.

If that doesn't go away when you move the mouse away, it's an issue with your browser, not with PE's vB.

In Firefox you can disable this by typing the following into URL/address bar and pressing [ENTER]: about:config

You will be prompted to tell Firefox you will be careful.

In the search field, type: tips

The only setting that appears should be "browser.chrome.toolbar_tips". Double click that and it will set to "false". If you want the tooltips back, repeat the process and set it to "true".

It only works for title attribute tooltips, though; but, that's what you're complaining about.

I don't know how to do this in any other browser.

Yeah, I understand how autosave works, having used word processing software for about 25 years. My problem with it is that I have to wait while it saves and that's pretty annoying. After using word processing software for 25 years, I'm really, really careful about not losing stuff, so have rarely needed the help of the autosave feature except in cases of Windows crashes, which haven't happened to me since back with Windows 95 or so. And no, I'm not using an old PC. I do type fast, though. I think autosave also interrupts scrolling, if that's what you're doing when it forces itself on you.

BTW, I LOVE the mouse-over feature vic2012 doesn't like - it saves me a lot of time!

Cozy, I'm sorry if some of my posts aren't long enough for you. And if certain topics are off limits here in the DISCUSS SITE ISSUES area, just let me know. Is it time for the 30-Second Hate yet?

I should have explained in the post (referred to above) that the restore button appears when you need it. Specifically - if you navigate to a page with a message that had previously been auto-saved but had not been posted, then the restore button appears. It looks like this (click the image to see a bigger picture):

I don't think the problem is the browser, I think it's that my computer is just slow. I'm still using a desktop with 512k of RAM. I've been meaning to upgrade the memory to the max for years but at this point the 'puter's about 5 years old (and still on Windows XP).

I'm still using a desktop with 512k of RAM...(and still on Windows XP).

XP should be fine, but what browser and version of it do you have installed? System specs for when XP was new don't apply to the minimum specs for applications on XP today.

As well, many applications no longer properly support XP since Microsoft end-of-lifed the product and stopped support.

The combination of the EOL operating system and (modern?) browser cramped in 512 (MB?) of RAM may be the source of many issues while browsing the interweb tubes. People don't even code web sites any longer to be compatible systems of from the XP era.

Vic - I recommend that you upgrade your RAM.

I'm using a computer that is 8-9 years old and also uses XP. But I have 4MB of RAM, and rarely have problems.

Try this website: crucial.com

They'll want you to download a program that will identify your computer and will recommend the type of memory that you need. It's not really expensive - about $50, I'd think.

While typing a pretty lengthy PM last night, there was a power outage in my area. Fortunately I was able to recover the message due to the Auto-Save. Thank you Duncan & the Sean's for having the Auto Save feature on this version of PE. The only feature I miss from the old PE is the way to quote messages.

I have noticed that after some inactivity, I get logged out automatically. Is there a setting so that does not happen?

I have an XP based computer that I purchased in 2005 and it is still doing a pretty good job. It has 4GB of RAM. Although I have IE8, I barely use it since it works way slower on my PC than Firefox (Version 18). Depending if your XP is 32 bit or 64 bit version and the number of memory slots available, that will give you how much memory you could place on your PC. For a 32 bit version of XP the maximum amount of RAM memory you could use is 4Gb, although the computer will only display 3 or 3.5 GB being used. Not sure how much is the maximum amount of RAM for a 64 bit version.

Not sure how much is the maximum amount of RAM for a 64 bit version [of XP].

That depends on the motherboard and BIOS.

The physical limit for XP 64 bit is 128GB, which a desktop motherboard is never going to provide.

I'm pretty sure its 32 bit. It's an old machine. I could upgrade to 3-4GB but at this point I'm better off just waiting until it thing takes a crap and then I'll just have to get another computer. I did manage to speed the computer up a bit by removing the old Symantec anti-virus program. All those anti-virus programs slow you down, especially if all you have is 512mb of RAM. The difference was unbelievable. Even all those free anti-virus programs are resource hogs. So screw it, I'm taking a risk I guess. Adding 1GB of RAM would probably cost you less than $30 and will make a noticeable difference in the performance of your PC.

Regarding riding commando on the web, I will strongly suggest against it, especially with an older operating system like XP. I would recommend getting Microsoft Essentials (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download) as your security suite. It is free, does not take that many resources as other security programs and it is very stable and effective.

Microsoft Essentials is a solid product. Considering they are also the makers of Windows XP, it probably gives them an edge on the vulnerabilities of that operating system. Another free antivirus to recommend is AVG.

Greg
02-01-2013, 12:16 PM
I'm pretty sure its 32 bit.

Most likely. Very few XP machines sold as 64 bit on the OEM market, unless they were special purpose, and since your box has only 512MB of RAM, I suspect it wasn't anything "special".

I could upgrade to 3-4GB but at this point I'm better off just waiting until it thing takes a crap and then I'll just have to get another computer.

This depends on your cash flow. If you can spend $30 - $50 on 2GB of RAM (more than enough for XP), but can't do ~$500 for a new PC, I recommend going for the RAM. This will help your computer process the larger amounts of data flowing inside web pages, today, and allow you to install a virus scanner again--XP is still a target for virus, trojans and rootkits, so AV tools are almost a requirement.

If you have the ~$500, I'd recommend biting that bullet and getting a machine before you can no longer convince a store to give you a Win 7 machine. You may end up hating Win 8 with a passion and regret making the move too late.

I did manage to speed the computer up a bit by removing the old Symantec anti-virus program.

Good move. Both Symantec and McAfee have been horrible resource hogs and ineffective antivirus scanners for almost 10 years, now.

Microsoft Essentials is a solid product. Considering they are also the makers of Windows XP, it probably gives them an edge on the vulnerabilities of that operating system.

Unfortunately, MS Essentials' track record hasn't been very good, and I'm not even sure it works correctly under XP any longer. MS is probably no longer maintaining it for anything older than Vista. Even on Win 7 I would recommend at least supplementing it with an actual virus scanner.

Another free antivirus to recommend is AVG.

AVG has had a strange history. While it's free, I personlly don't like how the company develops the product. As well, they have been the source some very high profile security issues related to their anti virus product, and took an inordinate amount of time to respond to user to outcries before removing them. For this reason alone, I would avoid the company, but their AV product is nothing terribly special.

I use Avast antivirus, precisely because it has a very small footprint in memory and performance.

This.

Avast doesn't get enough recognition for what they do. They have always maintained an efficient product with both free and paid options. I have used it on my customers' and my own machines for years.

While no AV product is perfect--and cannot be--Avast have responded rather timely to changing virus methodologies have a product that performs very well and efficiently.

But, yes, you do need more than 512MB of RAM to run any of these things these days.

Based on yours and Duncan's endorsement, I will have to check out Avast. MSE was working well on my XP based PC until recently. I had a hard drive crash and the place where I sent the computer to be repaired installed AVG instead of MSE. I did not noticed it until I got home. The tech assure me that AVG was a better product than MSE. I trusted him and left the "better" product. I have not had any issues with AVG so far.

What is your take on Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster & SUPERAntiSpyware? Any of them worth having in addition to Avast?

rapidfirerob
02-01-2013, 01:08 PM
I recommend Malwarebytes and Superantispyware, great product with a really funky name. If you want Malwarebytes, install it now before a possible virus is on your computer, as you probably won't be able to install it at that point. I also use Spywareblaster, though not sure how effective this program is these days. I've used it for many years and haven't read anything about it for a long time. I also use Avast as my antivirus program. The best method for keeping your computer safe is common sense IMO. AVG is also a fine antivirus program.

I recommend Malwarebytes and Superantispyware, great product with a really funky name.

I have not used either of these. I used to use Ad-Aware until it got bloated and strayed into some suspicious territory of its own.

I use and recommend SpyBot Search and Destroy, but while this is a very good (and free) product, it is more manual than many of the others.

Avast had also been adding certain malware signatures to their AV database, so there is some cross-over.

I also recommend installing the free version of Zone Alarm firewall (although it has gotten a bit pestery with the upgrade pop-ups). One thing to note if you go this route is that you should install ZA before Avast. Avast will handle the co-existence better than the ZA installer.

If everyone took the easy way out of MS problems, the cheezy-poof-eating basement dwellers that cause the virus problems would just move their attention to MAC.

But, in the mean time, if you can handle the MAC interface and Apple vendor lock-in with their app-store, it's not a bad move.

Malwarebytes doesn't run constantly in the background, does it? It shouldn't bring your system to it's knees. Or at least not the way I run it - which is to start the scan and walk away.

But maybe there's another version of Malwarebytes that provides constant protection? If that's an option I've never bothered...

Do you have scripting enabled?
Do you have cookies enabled?
Have you tried an alternate browser?
Do you have your PE account configured to keep you logged in all the time?
If yes to that last one, have you tried logging out on the old PC before trying on the new laptop?
Do you have any security software installed?
If yes, have you tried to disable it?
Do you have Java installed? Enabled?

That's about all I can think of at this hour.

It just rejects my login and vBulletin gives me the fields to re-enter my information. And then it says it's the wrong information and give me the fields again.

My suggestiona:

1). Delete your progressiveears.org cookie

2). I'll change your password. (Watch your PMs.)

3). try again...

I downloaded it anyway just in case. Not sure if it was the same free MSanti-virus I had but it's good to have just in case. I just installed a free av called "AVG." It's been recommended on PE before. I'll give that a try and see how the ol' pewter behaves.
If you have Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG, you have two antivirus running at the same time. You should only use one at a time.

Have you tried turning caps lock off?

I downloaded MS Essentials but I didn't install it. I did install AVG though. I ran a full scan overnight. The thing I don't like about these programs is that they want to stay running all the time. They sink their clutches into yuor computer and slow everything down. So with some tweeking I make it so AVG only runs when I launch it, not during startup. It's true about Malwarebytes, it doesn't stay running all the time. But the problem I've had with it is that once it starts, at some point my computer gets hosed. It just freezes and then the only way to stop the damn thing is through the Task manager. So I decided to just uninstall it. Bottom line is, 512mb of RAM is ridiculous. I need to quit being so cheap and get some RAM.

Yeah, I think that could be the real culprit.

AV services are not intended to be run this way, and it is actually not a useful way to run them.

Virus/trojans/rootkits can install while the AV software is down, and through the wisdom of Microsoft can be completely prevented from cleaning up the system after the fact. MS protects certain files from access--even to its own services--as a way of protecting them against virus attacks; however, attackers have figured a way around this that neither MS nor AV authors have been able to implement.

As well, infections that occur while AV is down may permanently destroy critical files and personal information that cannot be cleaned by AV software.

Running real-time AV services permits the software to use heuristic detection methods on the fly to test all executable code before it commits any damage to the system. It's not perfect, but with Windows it's the only safe option.

Again, I'm no longer fond AVG. It has a far larger foot print than Avast, and the company have gone in some directions that have caused many users to drop them as an AV provider--myself included.

Okay, I'll try Avast.

Antivirus programs need to run at start up and continuously. Your computer is at risk otherwise.

OK, after Duncan reset my password I got into PE on the new laptop. It took a little playing but I've got Windows 8 beaten into submission. There's a program called Start8 that restores the old start menu that helped a lot. My 85 year old aunt wants a new PC and has already insisted that it have Windows 7. :)

Really don't feel like starting a thread just to ask a question/opinion so I'll just post it here.

Threads with lots of Youtube videos.

Does anyone else have this problem: You open a thread that is just post, after post of Youtube videos, and your browser (and computer) just gets hosed. It freezes up, or spazzes out and you have to use the task manager to kill the browser so you can start over again. Now, I'm just curious to know if I'm the only one this is happening to. I'm thinking it's because this ol' box I'm using only has 512mb of memory. That's problem it, but this was never a problem at Old PE. I'm sure it's mostly to do with low memory but I'm sure it probably also has to do with my browser or New PE.

Anyway, just curious. I've had to stop opening certain threads with a lot of YT vids.

Eight year old PC with XP and no issues with pages full of YT videos. FWIW,, I have my PC maxed out with 4 GB of RAM.

Do yourself a favor and break the piggy bank for at least one GB of RAM for your PC. It will make a noticeable difference on the performance of your PC. One GB of RAM will cost you about $20.

OMG. If it wasn't for this thread, I would have lost just now a post I put a lot of effort into. I knew of the auto-save function but didn't know about the "Restore" button.

Whew! Thanks Duncan!!

Yeah, that was a long post you created for me. I appreciate the effort you put into it!

BTW, do Christians have auto-save???

I just discovered something I hadn't realized before. The restore auto-save button is only visible after clicking on the "go advanced" button. Why isn't it visible under the quick reply window?

I stand corrected. It is there in the quick reply window. It wasn't yesterday, tho. IDK. Shit's been acting a little funky after I mistakenly deleted all my cookies in my browser.

It doesn't appear immediately. There's a timer, after which it starts to appear.
