Was perusing the latest edition of Classic Rock magazine today and there was an advert for a new Marillion box set, simply titled 'Ten Essential Live Albums' in a lavish box! I just checked Amazon and the bands website but no mention. Can anyone provide any details as I probably buy this!

They are individual releases, with the first two coming out this month. Apparently there'll be a box you can buy to put them all in.

there was a little ad for it in the living in fear single. seems to be reissues of previously released items in uniform packaging and maybe a box but ya info was scarce.

Lucy Jordache is unsure too. The box might be a box set WITH the CDs, not just an empty box. Selling an empty box seems unlikely (unless you're Jon Anderson!)

Plus, its really not that much fun to fondle an empty box....

That I think would be very near the top of my most unwanted albums of the year....

Ok, that's feasible as something similar was done with the Phil Collins reissues.
I assume all these shows are from the Hogarth era?
Watching the 'Brave' live bluray as I type 👍

I have the free sampler for that box set and those CD's that got released.

I see them on eBay all the time for Japanese
promo sets by many different artists. Must be a Japanese thing.

Well, you usually want to fondle an empty box before you fill it. ;)

And these empty Japanese boxes are expensive! Well over $100 for empty boxes.

Don't you think the only retail place that would sell an empty Marillion box would be the Marillion shop? I can't see it being sold directly by Amazon or in retail stores. And I don't see the label producing the empty box only for Marillion to sell. BUT, maybe they'll sell the set in the box, and provide the Marillion shop with a stock of empty boxes.

PFM did it a few years ago. Actually the box was free but you needed to collect all the coupons included in each separate live CD and mail them back to get the box. Didn't worked very well, many issues and a commercial flop.

What were the issues? I bought them all, mailed the coupons in and received the box a while later. It's a nice little set IMO!

I picked up the first two of these Marillion live albums in HMV today. Fairly bland sleeves. Seems there is going to be 5000 of each album judging by the numbering.

I've just bought the first two CDs - Holidays In Eden Live 2011 and 'Size Matters' - and I'll almost certainly get the rest. I'm curious as to when the box will appear, though.

They should have released the first CD with the box, like they did with Phil Collin's reissue series.

Anybody able to comment what exactly makes these 10 shows particularly "essential"? - What's special about the first two shows released? - Why 10?

^ Why 10? Why 10 anything? People like 10.
These shows are being sold retail, which I guess they never have been before, so presumably they picked 10 that they thought someone who didn't already buy lots of live albums direct from Racket would like. To be honest I haven't looked closely to see which 10 they are - I know I have them already. Some are probably OOP.
Just looked at the first two. Both from Marillion weekends, which are usually good shows because the crowd is all die-hard fans and the band is usually in top form, having rehearsed specially for the weekends. Size Matters is fun because it's all epics. HiE live is nice if you like HiE, and some of those tracks are great live. Plus they do some b-sides from the album.

I have a buddy who was a member of the fan club back in the 90s and they were sending him live albums all the time. He burned me copies and they were from shows in Caracas, Rochester, and other places. Could this just be a collection of those?

They were sending him those because he was ordering them. Some he may have gotten because he joined the Front Row Club, which was a subscription live series like the King Crimson Kollectors Club, or whatever it's called.
Here's a list of what EarMusic is reissuing (in no particular order) courtesy of Mark Kennedy. None of them are FRC releases, they're all Racket releases from the Marillion Weekend shows except Unplugged at the Walls, Happiness Is Cologne (this was released as a Christmas DVD for the fan club), and Live in Glasgow. Actually, Live in Glasgow WAS released by the FRC after it was one of the first regular live Racket releases and was long out of print.

From Lucy Jordache:
Ear Music have let me know that the next two live releases are as follows:
The next two releases are:
Marillion - Unplugged At The Walls
Marillion - Tumbling Down The Years
Both products will be released on March 23rd, 2018
and about the box:
there won't be an empty box sold - just a limited edition (500) of all of them sold together in one box.

^ I checked with Lucy Jordache about a month ago, and she thinks the box set isn't going on sale until some time next year. If I hear anything I'll try to remember to post it here.
