View Full Version : How common were Early Show / Late Shows?

I have several Zappa shows in my collection where there were early shows (afternoon?) then an evening show on the same day.. Just how common were these arrangements? Plenty of stories of how the Beatles did all night affairs in Hamburg.. I just know in my 40 years of going to concerts I've never attended anything but an evening show unless it was a festival setup.. I'm sure there were other bands who did this..

Humble Pie

Come to think of it, just about everyone that played The Bottom Line in Greenwich Village including Spock's Beard on their V tour and Mike Keneally with Beer For Dolphins.

In the 60's and early 70's, they happened all the time. Concert venues all over the world would schedule a matinee performance of some kind, especially if a show sold out, and there was new room in the performers' schedule for a second date. The Miles Davis live albums Pangaea and Agharta, were both recorded in Osaka, on the same day, one during an afternoon performance, the other being from the evening concert.

I know Zappa was still doing it in the early 80's, sometime, but I think for the most part, the practice had long since fallen out of favor, probably because a lot of musicians felt like they were being worked to death.

When I saw Tori Amos back in 1996, she did the same thing, with a show that started at like 7:30 or something like that, and I think the show I saw (because the early show had sold out) was like 9:30 or something like that. SO I imagine she, at least was doing that, on a regular basis, that recently.

Damn, my short term memory is frelled. Not only did I forget contributing that thread, but I also basically offered the exact same commentary both times. Talk about spinning your wheels. Oy!

At least you didn't state opposite things in the two threads, as people including yours truly have done from time to time!

Yeah, but I seem to do the double contribution thing a lot. I know there was a thread sometime back, maybe a few years ago, about albums that hadn't been issued on CD, but should be. So I posted in it, forgot about it, then a year or two later, I think, some necromancer brought the thread back, and I made basically the exact same post again, though I think started with "I'm not sure if I contributed to this thread before or not", and someone else responded with "Yes you did contribute before, and those were the exact same albums you named the first time!".

But I suppose consistency is a good thing, if at times a bit tiring, I imagine. :)
