Good stuff, I'll have to check out some of those bands you mentioned, and of course some of this list.

I've tried Colors by BTBAM but it didn't hit me. Maybe the clean vocals sounded lame perhaps or I was just not in the mood? Should I try again? Why don't you dig the Cattle Decap album? I am getting into Gojira now too - some good stuff there.

Gotta say - I am a medium-sized fan of metal (usually the more insane grindcore and tech stuff) but immersing myself in the entire genre right now (including thrash, doom, djent, black, viking, etc etc) is REALLY REALLY REALLY fucking fun and I am enjoying myself immensely. I was kind of losing steam with prog a bit, and this current binge has seemed to invigorate me. I am amazed at how vast and diverse metal truly is - there are really no words to describe it. Even an album like Power Trip Nightmare Logic, which is a modern throwback to thrash/hardcore is just so much goddamn FUN. I dunno, we'll see how long this ride lasts but right now if it's not metal, it can go fuck itself with satan's dirty underwear. :horns

:horns:lol:horns

So, I'll say this about BTBAM: I had Alaska and one other album of theirs and they did NOT click for me at all until I happened to catch them live. They are (IMHO) exceptionally good, tight and powerful onstage and that is when the music really came to life for me. So it's a case for me where I'm listening to the album through my own mental filter of recalling what they can do live. I'm seeing them next month in fact so they're on tour now...if they've in your neck of the woods dude, give 'em a stab :up

Speaking of losing steam, so it's kind of funny: I'm very ambivalent regarding modern prog and quite a sizable amount of classic prog but I've been going nuts diving into the synthwave scene. Stuff like Carpenter Brut (best live show EVER), Dance with the Dead, Dan Terminus, Gost, Perturbator and more. I've chatted with a few of those dudes at the shows and most of them are actually metalheads who got sick of metal and decided to go all synth instead :lol We're all running away from something or another, I suppose!

Loving this channel too......tons of great content.

This is probably going to be my album of the year. I absolutely adore every minute of it. Reviewer is fun but he definitely missed some things: he commented on not being able to find a theme, where the band explicitly said that this was an album WITHOUT a concept throughout.

If you haven't seen the short film (basically the two videos for the first two tracks blended together), it's amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jD2EvFhxnQ

Everything they've done since Vertikal is pure solid gold in my world.

Oooohh this is good! So can you fill me in on this band? King Diamond was after this band? Is this considered black metal or a precursor? Is this whole album great?

King Diamond is a founding member and main writer of the band. The first 2 LPS and the EP are legendary, and Melissa in particular I would call a masterpiece. They were precursors to everything - thrash metal, black metal, power metal. Incredible riffs and musicianship combined with zanny vocals from mr Diamond. To cut a long story short this is an absolutely essential metal band.

I am very pleased you dig it. It would be wrong if you didn't.

Not into the black metal stuff? Some of it is....ummm....cheesy as all fuck perhaps.....but there is an endearing dark, Scandinavian, eerie quality that draws me in. That Dodsengal album sounds different to me - I was digging it so much I ordered their next double CD for $26 in a digipack book! Oh yeah.:horns

Oh no, I dig me some black metal. I tend to lean towards the atmospheric stuff (Alcest, Wolves in the Throne Room, to a lesser degree Agalloch) but there's always room for BM at Chez Batts. In fact, I just found this very cool synth-heavy black metal band to enjoy: https://gnawtheirtongues.bandcamp.com/album/gold-are-the-ashes-of-the-restorer

Probably a fair # of these are already familiar to you BUT:

Cult of Luna - post
Deafheaven - shoegazer black
3rd and the Mortal - atmospheric doom/avant <-- these guys were actually my entry point into the world of metal and will forever be near/dear to my heart. And 'Painting on Glass' is a D.I.D.
maudlin of the Well / early Kayo Dot - astral
Gaza - hardcore / progressive
Between the Buried and Me - progressive / hardcore
Intra Arma - progressive / doom / etc.
SUNN O))) - drone GOD
Sub Rosa - might be closer to Swans than straight metal but god were they amazing
Oranssi Pazuzu - black / psychedelic / post / progressive

These are just off the top of my head, there are probably more...

When black metal started incorporating more melody and symphonic elements, I started tuning in more. I can't really get into the original wave of stuff that is mostly just poorly recorded noise with very little variation between the songs. I really like stuff like Dimmu Borgir though, and one of my favourites was Thy Serpent. Check out these two tracks - first one metal, second one atmospheric:

The solo King Diamond stuff is good but far inferior than the Mercyful Fate.

The first two Mercyful Fate albums are absolute classics. The first four King Diamond albums are great too. After that, both outfits become rather hit-and-miss for me, although King Diamond put out a couple of really solid later releases with Voodoo and The Puppet Master. I've never been wowed by the re-formed Mercyful Fate albums. They're okay, but I'm never compelled to put them on.

Well, one of my favourite current bands is The Agonist from Montreal, who have just put out their sixth album. The first three had Alyssa White-Gluz as vocalist before she defected to Arch Enemy, and she was replaced by Vicky Psarakis. Both singers switch between death metal vocals and clean, melodic singing (Psarakis does far more of the latter than White-Gluz did). They can get pretty intense, but it's impressive stuff IMO.

I also quite like the legendary Greek band Rotting Christ, who have put out several solid releases over the last decade that have seen them become a bit more atmospheric and experimental. Examples of both bands below:

Still got both their demo cassettes and their split with Pungent Stench from back at the times. They were a great death/grind band at this short window of time when such stuff was the cutting edge of rock music. That's the main reason they remain a reference of the genre.

Oooo, fun list.

I had given up on this thread, but now I see that Frankie and John are back, so I need to scroll back and di some reading / listening!

I'll try out as many of the albums as I can on that list - as well as on this list:

https://www.popmatters.com/20-best-metal-albums-2019-2641444994.html?rebelltitem=20#rebelltitem20

I'm a bit skeptical about that pop-matters list, though, as I don't see any of the albums that ought to be there. But I'll scan their recommendations anyway.

SO FAR, for 2019, I'm all over the new Devin Townsend rekkid, which has had a lot of spin-time o my phone.

JOHN - how was the Tool show? (I couldn't make it, but my son was there.)

BTW Frankie: I saw Big|Brave with another act called Lingua Ignota. Think early Diamanda Galas with 2019 production potential. She was MAD awesome and her albums are stunners.

Tool was great, very polished and uber entertaining. Killer multimedia too. Killing Joke was excellent too although their mix wasn't as clean (opening band blues).

Seeing Between the Buried and Me @ Fillmore in the next week or two and that should be grand :)

Definitely get “13” is you don’t have it. Ozzy back at the helm and a really strong album IMO. For the Tony Martin era, my favorite is “TYR”, with “Cross Purposes” and “Headless Cross” also being good ones. I was disappointed with the Heaven and Hell album “The Devil You Know”. I was really looking forward to it, but didn’t really think it lived up to expectations, but opinions vary on that.

"TYR" is a loose concept album based around Nordic Mythology. It is a bit bombastic and over the top, but that is part of why I have always loved it. "Cross Purposes" is just a good solid Sabbath album IMO with Martin doing a nice job on vocals. "Headless Cross" is good too, but every song is about the devil / satan, which kind of gets old after a while, but it is still a pretty good and the title track is one of the best songs of the Martin era.

For those that care....last night's show:

Invertals: instrumental nerdy math rock/metal. Great playing, reminded me of Chimp Spanner in a lot of ways. A bit heavy on the backing tracks but not to the point of distraction. Great opener.

Between the Buried & Me: just fantastic. Tight as hell, power to spare, fun creative songs. At one point Thomas (singer) botched a line, started laughing and improvised a different lyric about Tommy f**king up the lyrics. All the more impressive given how complex the music was at that point. Another great night from a great live act.

Chon: Oh fun! Not quite as metal but tons of fun guitar-led math rock/fusion with touches of metal. Most impressive was how packed the Fillmore was (a big joint) with folks out to see an instrumental band rock out with some brains.

Why I prefer and recommend Cross Purposes is that it is indeed a good solid Sabbath album. Most likely Geezer's participation helped. Tyr has two great "Sabbathy" tracks for me. Anno Mundi and The Sabbath Stones. Headloss Cross has some great tracks, but, as you stated, some of the lyrics are pretty goofy. I also find Tyr and Headless Cross less "Sabbathy" overall and something about the sound/production doesn't click for me. Same with Eternal Idol. A few great tracks, but some duds, and the sound doesn't work for me. I guess I am in the minority in digging The Devil You Know. I liked that one from the first listen. I have recently revisited Dehumanizer big time, and consider it an even bigger achievement than I already did. The lyrics to Computer God are pretty timely.

OK, Bye.

Yeah, that era of Sabbath gets marginalized, especially Tony Martin. To me Sabbath was as good if not better than Priest in the mid 80s. Tony Iommi is Black Sabbath.

'80s Sabbath is FAR better than '80s Priest. In spite of no fewer than three vocalist changes (four if you count Glenn), Sabbath turned out album after superb album. And what Priest record stacks up against Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules?

I mean, I like me some Point of Entry and Screaming for Vengeance, but let's be real. Priest never had a "good" rhythm section till Travis started playing drums. :lol

I agree the Martin era gets marginalized. I like all the albums he's on, even the oft-maligned Forbidden, which contains one of Sabbath's greatest numbers in "Kiss of Death."

I don't buy that completely. Travis is a thrasher. IMO, the wheels came off of JP in the 80s after Turbo, Ram It Down experiment. Maiden somehow made it (synth) work. Somewhere In Time, and especially Seventh Son are fine, fine Maiden albums.

Anyway, NP: Anthrax.....Spreading The Disease.

Holland and Hill were like boat anchors. 1-2-3-4. Thud. Thud. Boom. That's it. Practically AC/DC. I ought to give Les Binks more credit, though. He wasn't stiff like...you know, I see an opportunity for a joke I know somebody will make, so I'll leave the sentence, er, hanging. :lol ;)

Half of Turbo is alright. The songs are different, but "Out in the Cold" and "Locked In" are good. The album isn't worse than Triumph's Surveillance, which was such a disappointment after so many killer records.

Painkiller is the album you want to mention. That brought them back up to speed.

Wow...lots to unpack and I'm still just on the first tune. Thanks!

For those that care, for those that can hang...saw Cult of Luna this weekend. "Dawn to Fear" was already my favorite album of 2019, and the show...god the show. So much power. And while they might've fooled me, I did not catch them using backing tracks. Everything I heard sounded live, with tempos pushing/pulling with the energy of the band & the room, dual drummers and crazy levels of musicality (especially with tons of strobes happening all around them).

See them if you can. It's a hell of a night.

I never expected to listen to Cookie Monster vocals myself. I disliked it until the first Sleepytime Gorilla Museum album was released back in 2004. This album contains some harsh vocals in an avant- progressive music setting. That was the starting point for listening and appreciating more music with harsh vocals.
Next steps was getting into atmospheric sludge metal. With bands like Cult if Luna, Neurosis, Callisto, Isis, Dirge, Amenra, Postvorta, .... I’m very happy to have crossed the bridge to another challenging music genre.

I had s similar experience many years ago, but my "gateway drug" was Opeth's Blackwater Park.

I'm glad you were able to cross the divide, and wish more "progressive" music fans would be more open to it!

Steven Wilson told me many years ago the the most "progression" in music right now is coming out of the metal genres. He was right. And he was not referring to the same-old-same-old Ozzy / Priest / Dream Theater formats - he said those acts hadn't done anything new in the last 15 years - and hence, if they aren't "progressing", they aren't really "progressive".

That one and "Leaving Your Body Map" by maudlin of the Well were the two that won me over. Now, it's the sort of thing where I hear some songs and I can't imagine them WITHOUT that vocal style. Contrasts are often best: I like earlier Opeth and pretty much all Cult of Luna because it isn't just growls, nor is it just clean singing. They use what the song requires.

I know it isn't going to be for everyone, and respect for that, and to those who did at least try.

Minor aside: I had tickets to go see Cult of Luna/Christmas in NY for their Mariner tour but had to bail at the last minute. I still kick myself for missing that show every single day.

Never been to the State in Kazoo. I remember seeing Eric Clapton at Wing's stadium in the early 80s with Albert Lee as his rhythm guitarist. I remember thinking only Clapton could have someone like Lee as a friggin' backup on the guitar. But then a few years later I saw Clapton and Phil Collins was his drummer. So I guess when Eric calls, you just go.

P.S. The Black and Blue tour was the only time I ever saw Dio live. It was great, of course, but I still think the Sabotage tour when Ozzy was still in the band was the best Sabbath show I've seen.

For those who prefer a more contemporary approach to metal - this is interesting:

Wilderun : Veil of Imagination

Oddly, a friend in Germany alerted me to this Boston-based group.

There are a few "cookie monster" vocals (go on, be brave - it will be worth it in the long run ;) ). If you need a "genre", I'd call it symphonic-progressive metal - though it's more wide-ranging than that. It crosses from regular metal to soft acoustic ballads to hard-edged prog to bombastic symphonic textures to regular progressive metal.

In the U.S. they had some really big hits. If you listened to rock radio at all in the late 70's and early 80's I am not sure how songs like "Roller", "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen", "Just Between You And Me", "I Like To Rock", and "All Over Town" could be missed.

Yeah, that run of albums is essential in any hard rock fan's collection IMO. For me personally, there's a major drop following Uli's departure, although I think they regained steam a few albums later with Blackout and Love At First Sting. After that, an even bigger plummet, with the exception of the surprisingly good Humanity: Hour One.

But yeah. Virgin Killer and everything else from that period are musts.

Lovedrive is kinda generic. Their evolution from proggy, heavy rock to commercial heavy metal is sorta like the same evolution of Judas Priest, from heavy, experimental, proto-metal to complete, metal knuckleheads by 1978.....:lol Seriously, I do not understand how Rocka-Rolla is so marginalized. This is how Heavy Metal sounded in 1974. It was heavy and riffy, yet proggy. Great album. I need to buy the damn thing.

I'm into Fly To The Rainbow and Lonesome Crow at this very moment. Lonesome Crow is very proggy and krautrocky, but it's heavy too. Michael Schenker was/is one hell of a talent. He's not Uli but he's damn good. Fly To The Rainbow is awesome. There's still a prog hangover on it but overall heavier and riffy. I should buy these albums.
