Well, I listened to Blood Incantations two albums, and they were both fine. Nothing really jumped out as extraordinary or particularly notable, albeit after just one listen to each. I'm still interested in the aforementioned anticipated ambient album though.

I do think Geddy did his best singing on all of the '80s albums.

His voice never sounded as good as it does on "Tai-Shan!" The irony!*

*I like "Tai-Shan," but most people don't.

^Same here. The weakest song on HYF imo is probably prime mover.

Also, I think Neil's lyrics reached their peak in the 80s. The 80s might overall be my favorite period for the band.

If you heard only No Exit and Perfect Symmetry by Fates Warning, I understand why you may think there are shades of thrash. But those are also two of their best albums. Maybe another go?

Two that I don't have. :lol In my collection are, Awaken the Guardian, Disconnected and FWX.

I love love the two title tracks on Disconnected. That sound on Pt. 1 is kick ass!

Honestly, Disco-FWiX is not a period of the band I like that much, though they were still doing better than Queensrÿche. Their latest (some think it may be their last) album is WAY better than those. It has one of the best songs they've done, in fact! Check this out.

Mark Zonder's on Perfect Symmetry. Yes, he's much better than Steve Z, who played only on a couple of the demos (included as bonus tracks on the deluxe edition).

I used to prefer Parallels, but the intensity and urgency of Perfect Symmetry, and songs like "Chasing Time" (one of Alder's finest moments) and "At Fates Hands" (nothing else like it in their discography), made me realize it's arguably their best album.

But I do like Parallels and Inside Out a lot. FW is a great, great, great band.

No this was a band in the 90's that recorded on the Kenesis label. They were out of the Washington DC area and did two albums "Kingdome Of Ends" and "There In The Shadows". One of the guys, whose name escapes me at the moment, went on to form Ad Infinitum. I believe he is a member of this forum. Anyway........these guys were more neo-prog than metal, so different band.

Annihilator are still going although I haven't heard anything they've done in years. They are often mentioned alongside bands like Voivod and Sacrifice when it comes to the biggies of the Canadian Thrash scene. Those first couple of albums are just as good as the contemporary scene from the U.S. or Europe, IMO.

Here's some Sacrifice, just for the hell of it:

Although they were from my home state, other than the big hits, I never really explored GFR until much, much later in my life. I bought one of those mini-box set collections of their first 5 albums and I was really blown away by how good they were. BTW in my previous post I called the one you posted their first album, which of course is incorrect as that was their 2nd. It is sometimes hard to remember that GFR got to a point where they were headlining football stadiums. When their popularity fell, it fell pretty hard and fast.

I saw the current lineup at a Ribfest about 5 or 6 years ago. Don and Mell are still members along with Max Carl (former 38 Special), Bruce Kulick (former Kiss), Tim Cashion (former Bob Seger Silver Bullett Band), so it is kind of an all-star band now. They put on a surprisingly good show and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I also got to see Mark Farner solo about a year later opening for Blue Oyster Cult. He was also great. His voice was still in good shape and of course he can still play the hell out of a guitar.

I thought they were strictly second tier. Sure, there were some good hooks and riffs but nothing with the immediacy, complexity, and power that the British groups were displaying. I am reminded of the words of Homer Simpson "You kids don't know Grand Funk? The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drumwork of Don Brewer?" Fun music but never beyond that.

Vic2012

I The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher?

Yes. In 1970 I would've been 12 years old. I was already listening to Led, Santana, Blue Cheer, Mountain, and Grand Funk. They were 2nd tier but I loved them. I lost interest when they started doing boogie and R&B. But they were an early, proto-metal band.

True that instrumentally they were not all that much above a good bar band, but I liked a lot of what they did, especially the early stuff. I have always thought Brewer was a bit under rated too. Along with Grand Funk, he played in Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band for quite a few years. I saw them live twice with Brewer and thought he did a great job. I mean, he is no Neal Peart, but for a basic rock drummer I liked what he did.

I had a cheap electric guitar in the early 70s. I cut my teeth on Grand Funk. Mark Farner was a guitar hero, imo. He had a hollow body, fuzzy, distorted, feed-backy tone. I loved it.

I had a cheap electric guitar in the early 70s. I cut my teeth on Grand Funk. Mark Farner was a guitar hero, imo. He had a hollow body, fuzzy, distorted, feed-backy tone. I loved it.

I didn't appreciate GFR until I heard Monster Magnet's cover of Sin's a Good Man's Brother on the first album, and it made go back and dig the early stuff. Agree with your thoughts there about the tone; it elevates some stuff that might be a bit pedestrian otherwise.

This is taking grindcore to the next level, what should it be called, YT-core?

Note - Of all the genres I've seen live, Grind bands are THE most fun. The exude frenetic energy and chaos every single 25 second song, and hands down the craziest a$$ mo-fo musicians in the world! The best I've seen was Graf Orlock at a hotel pool stage where at the end of the set the lead singer was crowd surfed to the pool. Him and 10 or so fans ended up moshing in the shallow end.

new Zero Hour album "Agenda 21" coming May 13th. Return of Vocalist Erik Rosvold.

1st new album in 14 years.

https://www.frontiers.shop/detail/index/sArticle/1371

GENRE: Progressive Metal

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the release of "Agenda 21", the new studio album from the recently reformed progressive metal band Zero Hour, on May 13, 2022. Original members Jasun Tipton (guitars) and Erik Rosvold (vocals) have recruited bassist Andreas Blomqvist (Seventh Wonder) and drummer Roel van Helden to join them on this new chapter for Zero Hour.
Originally formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in '90s by Jasun and his brother Troy, Zero Hour released six studio albums from 1998 to 2008. Their self-titled debut (1998), "The Towers of Avarice" (2001), "Metamorphosis" (2003), "A Fragile Mind" (2005), "Specs of Pictures Burnt Beyond" (2006), and "Dark Deceiver" (2008). The genesis of Zero Hour was to create heavy, melodic, dark, intricate music with influences from diverse influences like the DIO-led years of Rainbow, The Pat Metheny Group, and Dream Theater.
Zero Hour dissolved after the release of their 2008 album "Dark Deceiver" when Troy Tipton suffered an arm injury that prevented him from playing bass. After Jasun and Erik got back together to start the band back up, they recruited drummer Roel van Helden. Jasun and Roel had become friends after Roel’s group at the time, Sun Caged and Zero Hour played a gig as direct support for Liquid Tension Experiment. They stayed in contact and years later, Jasun caught up with Roel overseas and they chatted about making music together. Roel was then instrumental in bringing Andreas into the fold as one of Roel’s former bands had toured with Andreas' band Seventh Wonder.
Jasun structured the music for "Agenda 21", tracking the guitars and keys. Roel then arranged the drums and entered Kohlekeller Studios to record the drums with Kai Stahlenberg. Andreas followed by arranging and recording his bass at Cross Back Studios. Erik Rosvold wrote the lyrics for the songs on "Agenda 21" with the vocal melodies arranged by Erik and Jason together as the vocals were recorded.
Progressive metal fans will find much to celebrate on Zero Hour's fantastic return album, "Agenda 21"!

Tracklisting:
1. Democide
2. Technocracy
3. Stigmata
4. Memento Mori
5. Agenda 21
6. Patient Zero

Line-Up:
Erik Rosvold - Vocals
Jasun Tipton - Guitars and Keyboards
Andreas Blomqvist- Bass
Roel van Helden - Drums

I've been on a super Cathedral kick the past couple months, but have been jamming some other doomy bands as well. Candlemass, Windhand and Pallbearer. I figured it was a thank you to the fans or something, but it turns out it's a thank you to God. Yep, it's an entirely different Elder, and this is their only song on Spotify! :lol

I assume these things happen (they happen a lot) because Spotify doesn't pay employees enough, in addition to artists.

The organizers stated they were going on hiatus after the 2022 edition of Maryland Death Fest to think about the future of the festivals. I think the whole thing with having to cancel twice plus that they have been doing the MDF edition for 20 years as well as the others-Netherlands Deathfest, UK Deathfest (both are the others running this time out), California Deathfest, Quebec Deathfest, Scandinavian Deathfest and the defunct Days of Darkness (not sure which of the other three were still ongoing). I think they just want to see if they still want to do this after the hiatus.

Indeed, and he's recently said that he finally got into prog in the last five years. He mentioned hearing Stand Up and being blown away by it (and yes, he acknowledged the irony re: Grammys).

Yeah I saw an interview with Kirk several years ago where he mentioned he was getting into King Crimson.

I've never thought of Kirk Hammett as a great guitarist but he has his distinctive tone/style. Really enjoyed his EP. Gonna give it another listen.

I would argue that some of Metallica's stuff, espectially "And Justice For All" era is prog-metal.

Oh, absolutely. Have you ever tried to count along to Blackened? The time sig changes are psychotic. He's saying they weren't listening to prog bands - like Tull for example - until recent years (or him, anyway, I know Lars has always been a big Marillion fan... yes, really!)

Working in Berlin this weeks means extra extra headphone and music time. Here are the discoveries -

Ba'al - In Gallows By Mass - Sludgy stoner atmospheric metal. The vocalist is a true talent.

Petbrick - Look what Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura) is up to, Experimental Rock!

White Ward - Love Exchange Failure - I don't "Post <Genre>" often, but when I do it sounds like this.

Kirk Hammett becomes the first Metallica member to do a solo release, the Portals EP. Pretty cool actually! A little different from what you might expect.

Was he kicked out of the band too or did Hatfield and Ulrich come to their senses to let other members work on non-Metallica related projects?

I love Meshuggah but haven't quite been able to stir myself to listen or purchase their new one. Maybe just because the ostensible variations in their catalog tend to be hard to hear; I wouldn't know which one was the slow sludgy one, or the extra-fast one, or the more organic one, if Wikipedia didn't tell me. Not sure yet what hypothetically distinguises this batch of new Meshuggah.

"Royal" visit to the Papyrus Carlsberg Collection
In connection with the Mercyful Fate Concert at Copenhell, Kim Ryholt, Professor of Egyptology at ToRS, and Troels Pank Arbøll, Carlsberg JRF in Assyriologist at Oxford University and Visiting Researcher at ToRS, had the unusual idea of inviting lead singer King Diamond to visit the Papyrus Carlsberg Collection .
As one of heavy metal's biggest stars, King Diamond has over the years, among other things. drawn on mysterious elements of cultures from these areas in their songs. Precisely for this reason, the two scholars thought he might be interested in experiencing a selection of the unique ancient writings that the collection houses, and which are written on papyrus and clay from ancient Egypt and Iraq.
King Diamond said yes, and he visited the gathering with his family on June 19, hours after playing a bang of a concert the night before. Here he spent a few hours in the company of the two scholars who told him about everything from mummy bandages and curses to disease demons and the rise of scripture in the ancient Middle East.
King Diamond was welcoming with eventful stories from his more than 40-year career in the music industry.

Here's an excellent performance/arrangement/cover of a Malmsteen song (Far Beyond the Sun, one of his best easily) that was excellent to begin with! I don't remember whether I posted it before. The violin performance alone is amazing.

https://youtu.be/E2hZDzJp9Pc

P.S. Also, I think that having the (non-electric) violin play the loud and distorted and super busy lead guitar parts has made the song's sound both lighter and more clearly classical-crossover, more listenable/accessible to a portion of listeners of classical music who would otherwise ignore this song --- who still might :-)
