Two of my favorite 80's thrash bands are still making music. HELSTAR has put out two albums with a reformed lineup, "King of Hell" and "Glory of Chaos"

RAVEN released "Walk Through Fire" in 2009, which harkens back to their old sound.

Anthrax and Overkill have also released albums in the past decade that got decent reviews.

Skånska Mord need to be on the stoner/doom/retro thread. ;) Have you listened to their new one "Paths To Charon"?

I also liked them as Half Man...

Not entirely "recent" (well, it's all relative, I guess...these are within the last couple of years), but there are two classic metal bands with '80s roots that released some of their finest material with their last albums. The first is Riot - Immortal Soul. This will sadly be the last Riot album due to the death of original member Mark Reale, but man he went out with a bang....this album smokes. It has Tony Moore on vocals (the singer from the Thundersteel-era of the band), and it is very nearly a metal masterpiece. Awesome. Another band that deserves a comeback award is Flotsam and Jetsam, which released The Cold in 2010. It's a truly inspired album, and it may not be quite the thrash of the old days, it's a great, classy release.

If you like your metal melodic and warm, then Threshold's March of Progress is one of the best albums released this year.

I'll second the Soen recommendation that somebody else made in the thread.....pure Tool worship, but really well-done.

My favorite band of the last three or four years is Fair to Midland...not entirely metal, but definitely heavy and unique.

check out High On Fire. the local radio station i listen to has a programmer who plays these guys frequently, kind of reminds me of a heavier version of Mastodon (which are pretty cool too)

If you like your metal guitar oriented, full of great riffs, dark, mixed with horror, porno, industrial, country and instrumental, I can never recommend John 5 enough.

Some recommendations may have growls, but most will not. I've discovered some very good things there.

I think it's Jay and I that are the 'resident' John 5 fanatics. the man knows no borders or limitations.

Yeah, I have Last Supper and PtC. I like both a LOT. the same lineup was in Half Man? I'll have to look into that.

Sounds interesting. I've never heard of him (them?) How would you describe the music?

You've almost certainly heard him even if you don't know his name. He has played with David Lee Roth, K.D. Laing, Marilyn Manson, and Rob Zombie amongst a host of thousands of others.

I did describe him. He is a instrumental metal guitarist (currently with Rob Zombie) whose true love is country and blue grass. He has a facination with the occult, horror, serial killers, torture devices and porno. He can basically play anything and is IMO the most technically talented guitarist I have ever heard. Plays all of the most advanced styles and does so with ease. I can recommend all of his solo CDs but my preference is his first 2 Vertigo and Songs For Sanity as they are they have the most country licks mixed in. Check out some of his stuff on-line. Don't be fooled by the tats and makeup, he is one of the most straight laced conservative guys. Also, has one of the worlds best collections of Telecasters.

He plays metal on a Telecaster?

I'll look him up - thanks for the info

He has 6 CDs. It is probably best if you go directly to his site to see all of them. I buy everything from him direct so I can get everything signed. As for the 2 you mention they are his 2 latest with Art of Malice being more like the previous CDs and Got Told Me To having a considerbale amount of acoustic work. I would go with Art for a better example of his ecclectic mix of styles. Also, check out you tube tons of great videos out there inclduing some instructional videos. One thing for certain, of all of the guest guitar playesr the past 3 seasons of That Metal Show he easily has gotten the best reaction from the other guests. Paul Rogers almost shit himself when John was jamming out to the breaks.

If you dig "power metal", there is a band that debuted earlier this year called Reverence that does that style very well:

I haven't heard all of his releases (though eventually I'll rectify that), but of those that I have, my favorite is Requiem. You probably can't go wrong with any of them; he really is a supremely talented guitarist.

When I personally talk about metal I talk about everything riffs. And I refer to those monolithic riffs that only cavemen would appreciate. What I like most in this type of gigs is the audience shaking awkwardly their heads in a primitive attempt to dance (?!?) along with the music (?!?). These fucking savages are blowing everything up as they dive head onto their war-fueled insanity. This ain't happy music, but stuff to feed your most savage instincts! Ordinary heavy metal = pathetic love songs in comparison. Best doom sludge around!

God Told Me To having a considerable amount of acoustic work....

I was initially hesitant to get that CD because of so much acoustic music, but when I heard it I was really knocked out. his playing can be jaw-dropping great.

pallbearer is traditional doom metal from arkansas. longer tunes that jam a bit no cookie monster vocals according to what i've read.
