Yeah. Ditch the white toast. I'll use anything but white bread. Nothing against white bread but I'd rather have wheat or 7 grain, or whatever. Then I'd add to the BLT some slices of avocado, maybe a slice of cheddar. ;)

Replace the bacon with Montreal Smoked Meat, replace the mayo with a mix of mustard and mayo, prefer brown bread... and add a farm cheddar slice.... lose the pickle ... and you've got it...

Peanut Butter and Bacon on white toast. Mmmmmmm.I've been eating PB&B sandwiches my whole life, and still do! A big favorite of mine. I also have been known to eat PB&Cheddar sandwiches. When people "eeeewwwwww" at that, I ask the question, "If those 2 flavors don't go together, why has Nabisco been making their cheese peanut butter crackers for the last 50 years?".
Dave (in MA)

IMO good vine-ripened tomatoes are more important to the BLT than bacon, that's why the best BLTs have traditionally in late summer/early fall. In a pinch I've even thrown in some potato chips as ersatz "bacon" and had a good sandwich, but the tomatoes were right off the vine.

I love Mayo. Ya ya, I know about tradition regarding burgers and dawgs. You don't put Mayo on hot dogs. In my world I'm allowed to put mayo on my hotdogs, because I said I can. If that bothers people, too fucking bad :bad :lol.
Now, before we all start getting all lecture-y and start feeling bad about how bad bacon and mayo are for us. Look, if you have one, small BLT sandwich everyday for lunch, and you don't overeat for the rest of the day, you'll be okay. Everytime we talk about food here at PE it's always the same thing. People get on their highhorses about "reduced fat" and "gluton" and "veganism" and blah blah. Ya wanna lose weight? Eat less, excersize more. Enjoy your slice of pizza. Enjoy a hotdog (with Mayo :bad) once in a while. Just don't overeat. It's that simple.

Hmm all the Muffs that I have had both in New Orleans and elsewhere have been on round Muffaletta loaves which really have a distinct flavor and texture from typical french long loaves. I would argue that what you are describing would more properly be called a Muffaletta poboy. :p

I Always eat fries with mayo (depending on availability). Otherwise, i'll have ketchup, but I do prefer mayo. Hellman's in particular, i just love it.
The only food that truly requires ketchup (a tradition in my family) is tourtière (meat pie). That's a must 'round the holidays, along with the cranberry jelly (atocas) and the turkey with the yummy stuffing.
Back to the original subject, BLT is indeed a fine sammich, and I douse that mofo with Hellman's. Nice alternate touch is to use baby spinach, gives it a little additional zing.

If that's what you are getting for a Cuban sandwich you are being robbed.
A traditional Cuban sandwich has equal parts of ham and roasted pork shoulder, plus Swiss cheese and pickles on Cuban bread (On the inside one slice of bread has mustard the other butter) heated on a flat sandwich press. The roasted pork shoulder has to be marinated in a combination of smashed garlic cloves, salt, pepper and oregano for at least a day before roasting. Some places cut corners and skip on marinating the pork overnight and load the sandwich with garlic butter to compensate. That does not work that well. The best Cuban sandwiches use Virginia ham instead of generic ham. The bread has to be Cuban, not French or Italian. Cuban bread is much lighter and usually made with lard. No mayo, hot peppers, lettuce, tomato or salami on a traditional Cuban sandwich.

By "quick", I mean buying a lb of RB from the deli as opposed to putting a chuck roast in a crockpot for 8 hours. No french bread in sight, but there were bags of Bolillo rolls (Mexican french bread, essentially).
6" french roll, split
4 oz thinly sliced roast beef
Mayonnaise, liberally spread
A little creamy horseradish - optional (I do this, but some folks can't handle it.)
Very thinly sliced lettuce, tomato and onion
Beef gravy/au jus
Black pepper

A traditional "Reuben" is corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing on rye bread.
Never heard of a Reuben being dipped in batter and deep fried. A traditional Reuben is pretty good, but I am more of a pastrami lover and prefer the version that swaps the corned beef for pastrami, the sauerkraut for coleslaw and the thousand island dressing for mustard.

Okay, being that I'm from Florida, never been to Philly (I drove through it and didn't stop ;)), so I don't know if I've ever had an authentic, Philly Cheese Steak. What are all the authentic ingredients in a Philly Cheese Steak?
Scott Bails
12-17-2012, 11:39 AM
Vic, all I can tell you is that you can use the same ingredients, but somehow, it's not the same.
For a true Philly cheesesteak, you need ribeye steak, sliced thin, and grilled on a griddle. You need the right roll, and either American, Provolone, or cheese whiz. Onions are an acceptable option.
Peppers, which anyone not from Philly seems to think are part of a "Philly cheesesteak," are usually not. I mean, most places offer them, but they're not "standard."
Honestly, I'm not an expert at preparing them. But I can tell an imposter from the "real thing."
But, I'll give you an example.
I live in the Philly suburbs. Every sandwich/pizza shop around here offers an "Italian Hoagie" - a sub/hero/whatever with Italian meats, oil & vinegar, etc. They're pretty standard. I've eaten them all my life. I had a meeting in the city, and the host asked us if we wanted to go to South Philly to get hoagies. Of course we all agreed. It was like eating a different sandwich. It was heaven on a roll. I have no idea what was different, but it was amazing.
What's worse, I could never find that little corner deli again! :lol
I'd imagine any region's specialty foods are the same.
All this talk of mayo makes me wonder how many here have actually tasted "real" mayo - i.e. not from a jar - considering how easy it is to make I'm surprised it is not more widely offered in restaurants. First time I had it was in the South of France near the Spanish border - it was slathered on roasted asparagus - unbelievably delicious.

I was a professional chef for twenty years, and I have made mayonnaise "from scratch" countless times. Yes, the taste is better than the jarred garbage...
...EXCEPT for this variety, which is vegan...and is absolutely delicious; no weird taste, as in regular eggy jarred mayo, and no odd texture. Not only does it kick the ass of non-vegan jarred mayo, it is---IMHO---far better than homemade mayonnaise re: taste, mouthfeel, and versatility

I used to use "light" mayo for a bunch of years before I discovered the real thing has lower sodium. Plus it tastes SOOOO much better. I love mayo, one of life's simple joys. BLT's, please don't mess with them. You CAN'T lose any of the 3 main ingredients, otherwise its just not a BLT. You want to experiment with different types of bread, fine. Add cheese if you want, ok, no problem. But for me the same three ingredients on good bread? Why mess with perfection? Home grown Jersey tomatoes are best of course, but really, any tomato from a quality farmer's market will do -which I have close to home. Crisp lettuce of course -just love the crunch of it on any meat sandwich. And finally, REAL bacon from a pig. NO TURKEY BACON EVER! Can you tell I don't like that chewy substitute all that much? I love turkey, at least when its not pretending to be something else. Oh, and no pre-cooked bacon either. Crisp, just off the frying pan, though please drain some of the grease first, I do have my limits when it comes to unhealthy eating. Triple-decker sandwich of course, though I'd eat it any way you slice or stack it. I only eat BLT's a few times a year, and usually the summer months. But it's quite a treat.

That depends. It can be tasteless and yet provide a solid support for a product, as in the case of Vegenaise, so that the other flavors come through.
If you think that a soy product like tofu, tempeh, natto, or edamame (to name a few) has no taste; I'm sorry---you're simply not getting the flavors when you eat them.

You know, meimjustalawnmower has a point. There are many, many things I will never buy in Whole Foods because I see those items for what they are: wickedly overpriced "trend-of-the-month" items for the rich (green coffee extract, anyone?). Add to this the fact that they've been known to lie re: that which is non-GMO and that which is, and I am less apt to shop there and prefer to take my business to the organic farmers at the local farmer's market and to the small, independent natural foods stores for my beans, rice, fruits, and veggies...and to the Asian markets for my lovely natto, which everyone can't stand me eating. There's another word I wanna use but then I'd start a shit storm of controversy. Christ man, you look like a kid throwing a little bitchy tantrum. It's a public thread about goddamned sandwiches. Why not just start a private club about your precious sammiches now? I get that you have a problem with "vegans." I personally find it beyond ridiculous (no offense ENY). I like what Anthony Bourdain says about vaganism, it's a first world luxury. In most countries people eat whatever they can to survive. That means killing animals, insects, drinking milk from cows, goats, etc. My daughter has friends who are vegans. She told me something that made me roll my eyes. Her vagan friends don't eat honey. Why? Because it's a product produced by an animal. A fucking honey bee produces honey. It's one of the purist, most nourishing foods ever. But vegans won't eat it because it's produced by an animal. Again, no offense to vegans. If it works for you that's fine and dandy. I'd like to know what a vegan would do if they were lost in the forest. What would you eat? How would you stay alive?

Hey, dollface--thanks for the compliments!
Veganism is definitely a first world luxury; no doubt about it. I initially went vegan to overcome another kind of first world luxury: type 2 diabetes (which I have--at least 'on paper', as most of the med community other than my doc doesn't want to accept as fact--successfully reversed). A little while into it, veganism became much more for me than a diet for health.
Even on the simplest hikes in the woods, etc., I have always had two things on hand: a mag fire-starter and a knife. :D. If I were to be stranded, water and protection/shelter would top my list of priorities, and then food. Simple choice: if I had to kill to eat, I would, but I would base said killing on the environment and the season in which I found myself at the time.

Ok, I think it is time to bring this thread back to sandwiches.
This time I want to know what people think of one of my favorite sandwiches of all times that also involves pork (tying it to this thread). This one is a mid-western concoction, mostly from Indiana, called the pork tenderloin sandwich. It is made by first beating the crap out of a chunk of pork tenderloin till it is wafer thin and about the size of a dinner plate, flour and bread it,and then deep fry it. It is usually served on a normal bun with about two or more inches of patty sticking out in all directions. Must have condiments are fresh garden tomatoes and mustard although lettuce and sliced onions are often added as well. And yes mayo is acceptable if one must :D
For those unfamiliar.. this is a good link although I recommend kicking the spices a bit from the recipe given.

BTW the best sandwich covered in its own juices has to be a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich ordered dunked. They take the whole sandwich bread and all and dunk it in beef broth for a few seconds before serving... mmmmmm.

That's not the issue. The point is that there's a place for everything. This place is for BLT's. You wanna talk about food, then this is the place. You wanna flirt? Start a thread for flirting. I can't make it any more simple for you, dear.
No, no...I understand exactly what you are saying, but I wish you the best in trying to stand in the way of nature. Ain't gonna work. ;)
What kind of lettuce on those BLTs, by the way? Spring mix? Bibb? Romaine with the central rib removed? Boston? Red leaf? Green Leaf? Or do people prefer the ol' Iceberg standby? I generally go with red leaf or green leaf on my fakin' bacon BLTs, and for tomatoes, I like sliced Romas, although some fried green tomatoes are tasty, as well.
This will probably sound like a gross bastardization of the 'wich to the BLT purists, but I think some thinly-sliced red onion works well in these...and a dash of chipotle Tabasco mixed into the sandwich spread (vegan or non-vegan), too.
I knew one lovely old gentleman who made BLTs on sesame-seeded semolina bread; he was a fellow Italian, and to drive the point home even more, he added roasted red peppers to 'em. I thought that was an excellent touch.

Veganism is definitely a first world luxury; no doubt about it. I initially went vegan to overcome another kind of first world luxury: type 2 diabetes (which I have--at least 'on paper', as most of the med community other than my doc doesn't want to accept as fact--successfully reversed). A little while into it, veganism became much more for me than a diet for health.
.
That's cool. I had Type 2 as well. I lost 40 pounds and I keep the weight off through excersize and eating small portions. I still enjoy a BLT though.
if I had to kill to eat, I would, but I would base said killing on the environment and the season in which I found myself at the time.
Right, assuming you've had the education and experience to know what you're killing and eating in that forest during that season. I'm pretty sure I'd be dead after a few days or a week ;).

Don't get all worked up about something that (for better or worse) happens all the time here in terms of threads veering off course. They get back on track almost inevitably. The way I read the exchange between you and Tasia, you were openly hostile while she was being nothing but conciliatory.

While I may not agree with your consensus, I appreciate your comments which are duly noted. There's a difference between being direct and being hostile. Hostility comes in the form of Vic2012's most recent post to me, even though it was middle-school playground tough talk. If I misread Tasia's last post as being less than sincere, then I'm not above admitting as much. This thread, which was really started as a joke, has lasted longer than most, even before all this nonsense occurred. Nobody was more surprised than me that you could get 7 pages about the most simple sandwich in the world outside of a PBJ. So I'd like to see it go on a little longer without it being crapped on for reasons that would never be tolerated on a Yes thread. Is that so much to ask?

That was my point re: "ain't gonna work". Threads, by nature, are subject to vagaries/meanderings. They go where they will and--as a general rule, unless they're locked--they then make their way back to the topic, as progeezer indicated.

My last post was sincere. I was, and am, perfectly happy in bringing the subject back to food---which I did, and which I will continue to do while posting here---but there really isn't much I can do if you have simply decided that you don't like me posting in your thread, and/or that you don't wish me to do so.

You recently admittedly that this thread was started as a joke. So let's laugh at its meanderings. Not sure where all your anger is coming from and why it is aimed at a real peach like ENY, but it is the holiday season and perhaps a little good will and a less caustic attitude would help turn the thread in a more positive direction. Maybe this video clip will help. Funny and in keeping with the theme of the thread.......well sorta. It's one of my all time favorite Homerisms. Enjoy and Peace!

Well, I really can't compare notes since I was prolly soiling a diaper when you were enjoying that lean corned beef, but it's suffice to say that nothing's like it was in the 50's. My first time at Katz's was when I was on a family vacation in 1973. I like my corned beef on the fatty side, anyway. :)

Tasia - I was born & raised in Long Island City (Sunnyside) and spent just about every night in high school under the "el" on Queens Blvd. singing acapella doo-wop. Our group even got a few gigs at church and school dances:lol.
I moved to Maine in 1970 and in late '71 the band I was in broke up & the drummer & I went to Madison (his home town) to start another band. I've never left, and now I have 5 kids, a son and daughter-in-law and 2 grandkiddies who are all still in and around Madtown. The winters suck, but I just hibernate now that I'm retired:D. Rolling Stone, when it was still a good magazine in the late 60s did an article titled "Madison, Wisconsin - The 3rd Coast". It hasn't changed much since then, since the U of W is so damn big that Madison is a liberal thorn in the side of our Fuhrer Tea Party Governor Scott Walker.
