    Trying to remember a song

My dad used to play this song from the 60's or 70's about a Christmas party where there's a fire and the doors are locked and people die. I thought it was the Bee Gees, but nothing jumps out at me. It's not the NY Mining Disaster.
    "Alienated-so alien I go!"

Woody Guthrie, maybe? Older than 60s/70s, but the subject is similar. True story about someone shouting fire, and in the panic, dozens were trampled to death.

That's it! Did his son Arlo do a version of it?

And thank you very very much! I was thinking about songs with dark themes or subjects done by bands people would not think did dark songs (some ABBA songs were about going through nasty divorces and the Bee Gees did songs about a murderer with only an hour to live trying to get a message to his wife, two men facing death in a mine collapse and social isolation after a bad rumor, for example) and I could not remember who sung that song.

    Yep, on "Hobo's Lullaby" (1972).

Tragic history.I'm impressed with Woody Guthrie, without his work there wouldn't be Bob Dylan.Without Dylan there would be no progressive.

That's a leap but I'm sure he appreciates the props.

I remember years ago, someone (a comedian??) commenting about how many songs can be sung to the music of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," using the Star-Spangled Banner as an example.

    Think about it:

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

That's good for a laugh, but it's really a quite unremarkable fact. There are not that many different meters that a tune can have. There are probably thousands of songs where it's possible to swap the words of one with another.

For example, it's very easy to sing The Chiffons' "He's So Fine" to the tune of "My Sweet Lord". Wait a minute...

"The Theme From Beverly Hillbillies" to the tune of "Cheap Sunglasses" by ZZ Top

EDIT: One day later, I just NOW got your joke <facepalm>

Note to self: figure out how to do an entire day of conversation in the style of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzergerald"

Good morning my friends, let's all make amends
By sharing some bad office coffee.
The boss is an dread and I wish he was dead
But, I'll settle for the reception desk toffee.

I'll meet you for lunch, if you'll pardon my hunch
And don't get all upset if I order
Six enchiladas and three soft tortillas
From a restaurant named South of the Border

It's five o-clock now and I'm ready to chow
Back home with my goldfish and kitties
We'll play on the floor and it won't be a bore
As they playfully scratch up my titties

I'll crawl into bed, a old song in my head
And I won't sleep 'til I get all groggy
From trying to decide without looking inside
If it's pure British psych or just proggy.

    I'm here all week.
