For what it's worth there was also an Australian band called The Sports, who had a number of hits about things entirely unrelated to sport.
In Post 1, The OP asked "Which ones are my favorites?" in which my response means the Fogerty tune would be about it

Thats because its doing the "Lets Go" handclap cheer that can be heard at least three or four times at almost any baseball game..............The Cars emulated the pattern at the end of the chorus of Let's Go....cute

Ah yes, I see your point. Still, I think he should have actually recorded real handclaps, not used a damn drum machine. Would it have killed him to do, say a dozen overdubs of him doing the handclaps, or ya know, dragged a bunch of friends into the studio and had them do it together (does John Fogerty even have any friends?!).

No, you have a bunch of other favorites that you don't know about yet.

Sorry, but I cannot stay silent. I think Huey Lewis and the News produced some of the most vapid formulaic music pop ever to see the light of day. They almost encapsulate in one band what I disliked about the 1980s.

    I'll shut up now.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you meant there weren't any more sports-related songs.

But is that actually about cricket? I always thought "leaving the crease" was a euphemism for mortality or something like that.

If chess is a sport - which it is considered to be in some places - there is "One Night In Bangkok" by Murray Head.

Not just the one song, but the entire musical. I mean, it was called Chess after all.

PeterG just beat me to it with The Boxer.

Not sure about "Amelia" though - I know who it's about, but is aviation considered a sport?

For us old timers that remember Richie Allen:

"The woods would be very silent if the only birds that sang were those who sang best..." - Henry David Thoreau

In that case Yes has at least one song about chess or at least where it's mentioned. One is the "your move" section from "I've seen all good people." I thought there was another one too but I'm drawing a blank trying to remember which one.

Well, I'm not the one who suggested that chess is a sport.

And wasn't Kraftwerk's Tour De France just a single?

Probably "Going For the One", which mentions sport. Possibly the song title is a metaphor for trying to win at something.

    ------------------------------------------

Not exactly sport, but on the subject of training at a gym to keep fit: "Too Hot" by the Kinks.

Yes, I think it is, especially when it is being done to break records or to race.

So, are you suggesting I don't know what I'm talking about? Or that the Tour de France vinyl album on my shelf doesn't exist?

Anyway, well worth listening to. Highly recommended.
