We could probably lose the 'THE' on the thread title, no?

Great show last night - Ten Strings and a Goatskin were a really good traditional folk based trio and of course the fabulous Moulettes.

The set started with Sing to Me and the rest of it was all from the new album - they played for an hour or so.

Sound is always good at Hugh's - where we were sitting the guitar amp was pointed directly at us so we got lots of guitar which was cool - made it a bit crunchier that the recorded versions.

Ollie Austin and Jim Mortimore are a great rhythm section - really in the pocket but add texture when it's called for.

And the vocals are fantastic - all three of them can sing like crazy and harmonize amazingly well.

    Hope that helps .

Awesome - thanks. The new album is pretty spectacular and I love the progression that they have made on each subsequent release. About 2 months ago I never knew they existed, and now I am the owner of all four (4) albums. Its a bit odd because in some ways its not in my usual wheelhouse, and yet there are a lot of aspects to their music that appeals to me. Plain and simple - its fantastic music performed wonderfully by very talented individuals. Did you get to speak to any of them? One of the questions I would ask (if I had the chance) is: any BluRay and/or live CD in the pipeline?

I agree - the development as they've gone along has been very cool.

I'm not sure I like the new better than Constellations but that might be because I think Constellations is one of the best albums I've heard in the last decade - so pretty tough competition .

I chatted with Hannah and Raevennan for a minute or so each after the show but didn't want to take up their time so really just said thanks and that it was a great show. A live album could be pretty killer though.

I know the band members, in particular Jim Mortimore but I didn't discuss their future plans. I did make an audio recording which sounds great, reflecting the excellent room sound of Hugh's Room.

What a great show at Hugh's. Such a tight band. Incredible playing, singing, compositions and we got some lengthy stories explaining some of the concepts behind the new album, between songs. I talked with Jim a little bit and asked him what prompted some of the changes in the bands approach, from the much more folky and acoustic sounding Bear's Revenge, through to prog heavy, experimental Preternatural and he said that it was basically out of boredom, lol.....wanting to keep changing up the sound of the band, plus working toward a more electric sound, since they play a lot of festivals and find it easier in those environments to be louder.

It's funny, I really like Constellations, but prefer both Bear's Revenge and Preternatural by a hair. All solid releases, for sure.

Love that last line, from band leader Hannah Miller, “I love music that is complicated and something I’d like to do more of,” says Miller. “Right now, in Britain, there isn’t a lot of acceptance of complicated music.”

No acceptance of complicated music. Ha. When was the last time that there was acceptance?

in the 70's...I cant help feeling that they are heading in the wrong direction musically. Without a doubt, I personally love what they are doing, however, they built their fan base in folk and believe that it will backfire on them if they lean to heavily on the prog side. Just my opinion...

I'm not sure I agree. Without knowing Hannah personally, from that statement she doesn't seem like the type of person who likes to look backwards over her shoulder. And on a personal level I agree with her 100%. The development over these four albums is pretty staggering, yet their sound and vibe is always there, even on the new one. I hope they keep going into uncharted waters and there is no doubt that they will find some new friends along the way (like me for instance). They may lose some of the folkies, but tough shit, been there done that. Fripp says move on.

I think eventually they will make an album either with an orchestra (chamber or full symphony), and/or expand their sound palette even greater than it is now.

My opinion is based purely on the financial side, not on musical merit. The band members are solidly behind this trend to prog and so-called complicated music. They are bored with the status quo and are moving on to something more challenging and interesting to play. If they have aspirations of moving up financially, like being paid for playing what you want to play, I think that the headwinds will be too strong for them. I surely hope not...

I hear ya, but I guess we will see. I would like to think at this moment they their fanbase is at an all-time high, they are gigging more, they have more press and media coverage, so it seems to be a great path they are on. I don't see them going to back to pure "folk" to try to earn more dough. IMO of course.

I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled a Decemberists and went back to the more folk based stuff

And what would be wrong with that? What I have seen myself in the UK that the folk audience is mostly middle-aged to older and they might lose that audience but at the same time they are attracting a younger audience who don't have the knowledge of the whole 70s prog divide, they just think it is cool and challenging music.
If Moulettes where in it to become the next big thing they would have pulled a Mumford & Sons many moons ago. Remember, they were part of that London urban folk scene that spawned Mumford & Sons (their bass player is a former Moulette) and Laura Marling.

Hannah explains some of the inspirations and ideas about Preternatural in this Vancouver publication. Very much looking forward to their performances tomorrow at folk fest and others elsewhere in the coming days

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, just stated it as a possible path for them.

Moulettes were live on radio the other day, performance and interview. They didn't have their full instrument set up but it still comes off quite good. http://cirh.streamon.fm/ In the program window, click down to 'Live From Railtown' and you'll find the program.
