    Hello Everyone!

Yes Indeed.... we need to keep this thread going -

A week and a few removed from the Moulettes show in Toronto... and I promised myself that I'd write a bit about their performance! Music Mates and fellow PE'ers Dave Sr. and Neil, significant others and me, got treated to what I will state was one of the most delightful shows I've attended in recent years. First time to Hughes Room (sounds somewhat fancy doesn't it?) and upon entering my mind imagining what this place (how long in business I don't know) was like in a different era. Hughes is a 'supper club', I was quite hungry, and somehow the dessert cookies were served first! Ahhhhhhh a modern day electric cello high on its' floor peg, the mighty bassoon on stand, I asked about the autoharp as I wasn't quite sure what the instrument was indeed. Traditional drum set and electric guitar(s). 'Something is smelling awful good' (even on the stage)..... already! I ordered the Southern BBQ ribs.

As a man who QUITE enjoys female vocalists - the three female members absolutely nailed their parts. Whether in a lead role... or in some of their three part harmonies, it was blissful heaven indeed! I found myself concentrating on the lead and female guitarist rather often. I understand she's a relatively new member to their fold, and she certainly had some fantastic additions to the compositions as well as some wonderful conversations with that beautiful cello. THAT was fantastic! Yeah...I'll say it... 'musicgasmic' The drumming lent itself to the more traditional 'prog?' sound and approach. For my ears... my favorite type of drumming! The bass , to my thought, was presented too quiet and overshadowed. I kept thinking to myself that a bit more from bass in the sound mix would have really made these Moulettes stellar!

Man, those ribs were rather good. How about another half a rack??

Like I often do - I go to listen to a (new band to me) without knowing much at all about them or having heard any recordings. I just had to get up and find the bands table and purchased Preternatural' while at the show. On my return trip to Vermont I listened to this release twice. While back home I had an evening session with the disc. So far, and I emphasize so far, I missed the definite interplay between voice and instruments as I experienced them in the live performance. The CD sound is missing a sharper presentation of each recorded instrument(s). Composition wise...and as performed that night in Hughes Room, it is a fine, fine release!

Nice and pleasant evening for sure!

Got back yesterday from catching Moulettes live five times outdoors. They played a 3 day folk fest, a garden amphitheatre and some small city street fests. They went over well at all venues, considering 90%+ of the people there had not heard them, and most had not heard of them. For myself, even at the last show, there were still individual parts where I would discover a wonderful bass line or bassoon/moog interplay and other such bits. The vocals are of course their signature, each of the girls can take lead, each can harmonize with one or the other or all three together. Some songs are arranged where there can be multiple lead vocals combined with up to three different harmony arrangements in the same song. For myself, the White Rock show was best as the sound was best, the band thought they rocked that night, I was amongst a number of prog friends who were amazed by the band, great weather and atmosphere, and it was free. All songs on the new album are about lesser known creatures on earth and the song intros helped with my understanding of the lyrics. Disappointing was that the crowds were mostly age 50+, maybe all the kids were at Pemberton where there 45,000 per day at that fest (Snoop, Pearl Jam, Killers, many many more) or they were doing that new craze with their phone. Anyway, I was fortunate that they played multiple shows in my region that I could get to.
    I remember tomorrow

Blimey I've only discovered Moulettes this weekend but I bloody well love them to bits. I have picked up Bears Revenge, Constellations and Preternatural, quite a change from the first to last. Ill be looking out for the debut soon.

Must get to see a live show before too long, what a refreshing brilliant complex sound.

Moulettes latest album Preternatural, was listed as one of the albums of the week in today's Toronto Sun, a mainstream daily who's music critic is, like most mainstream music critics, not very prog friendly. So, we have to consider this a major achievement. Given 4 stars out of 4, Preternatural seems to be making waves...great news for a great album!!!

Hopefully Preternatural is livelier and proggier than Constellations, which I found way to poppy (and boring) to my tastes.

It is proggier. It is however probably still boring for your tastes.

If you didn't like Constellations I find it unlikely you'll like Preternatural - it brings in a bit more of the progressive feel but is still very recognizably the same band.

Beautiful album. I bought all four (4) albums and am happy I did so. I blame it on PE.

PS - "The Night is Young" is quite a tune.

Relistened this yesterday. Awesome album! Song "Coral" gave me quite an insistent earworm.

Thanks PE for another new [to me] discovery! I'm a sucker for this folky prog-pop with female vocals. Anybody sell their albums for a decent price [to a US customer]?

Supernatural turned out to be my favorite album of this summer. There were weeks when I listened to it almost exclusively. It seems I'm obsessed as well. :-)
Can anybody Tell me how their earlier albums compare?

Well, I have the last two, Constellations and Bear's Revenge. I'd say that Preternatural is their most proggy effort yet. Bear's Revenge has great songwriting with more of a folk component, and Constellations is somewhere between the two. They are both quite good, and favourites vary, from person to person.

Agreed with Neil. The s/t album is also worth getting and is folky with prog/art elements. If you dig their sound, all four albums are essential. I'm very curious to see where they are headed next. Anybody hear about a potential 2017 release?

Thank you, Neil and Chalkpie. I guess I'll try Constellations next and work my way further backwards if I also like it.

What? Where did you hear that? Damn, I did not see that coming as she has been with Hannah and Ollie from the very first beginning.

I see it was rumoured a couple of years ago, assume she is going back to medicine full time? Hate to lose a bassoon player.
