Thread: A Thread About COFFEE

    xoxo

I like drinking coffee in the morning. It always cheers me up before a hard working day. By the way, if you're too tired of your studies or work, address to this place to facilitate your life and get more free time http://bigessaywriter.com/blog/stop-...tea-and-coffee

Stunned that this thread continues - stunned! But grateful. My beloved Guatemalen "San Diego" is not available anymore so I'm drinking a really good Colombian called Jon Varon. But it ALL pails in comparison to the great single estate coffees of 1997 through 2003 - get me a time machine and I'll go back every week and brew you all what REAL "specialty" coffee was and should still be.

In PEv3, threads don't die after 2 months of inactivity - as they did in the old system.

I got an expresso machine a while ago, and have learned to make reasonably good espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos. Now I'm playing with "latte art", just for fun.

I've tried making Cuban coffees, but failed. When I was working in Miami Cuban coffees became a staple of mine.

Any thoughts about the best (easily available!) coffee to use in espressos and lattes?
    Regards,

    Duncan

My favorite coffee comes from Collet French Pastry & Cafe in Alpharetta, GA. They have a huge Espresso machine.
I also order coffee for my office. After trying numerous brands, I settled on Lavazza. This is amazingly rich coffee- better that the Kona brands I have tried.

In my experience, coffee made in an espresso machine is inferior to brewed coffee. Espresso made in an espresso machine is just fine. It would probably be good to make my own espresso, because if you buy it out, it is served by the thimbleful, which seems ridiculous for a grown man. But, whereas I have years of experience with brewed coffee, my experience with espresso is limited, so YMMV.

But espresso and brewed coffee are completely different drinks. Apples and oranges, IMO.

No - and they're in my town! Probably 5 miles from my house, and I've probably driven past there a dozen times in the past month I'll try them this weekend...

True. But that doesn't stop some places with an espresso machine from making all their coffee in it, and pretending it's what you ordered. Maybe the better places don't do that. I'm hardly the best judge of where to go. I prefer to make my own coffee. There is one drive-through place here I want to try, just because the line of cars is so long. I'm cautiously optimistic that they wouldn't line up and wait for bad coffee.

Duncan, If you get up to Gettysburg, Art House Coffee roasts up some good stuff. http://www.arthousecoffeeco.com/
I have bought from them during Rosfest the last few years and have not been disappointed .
They usually have a stand at the farmers market on Saturday morning.

Don't know anything about these guys, but they are also local to you.

    I see what you mean.

    I've never encountered that.

OR ... my palate isn't smart enough to pick it up when it happens

Thanks, Mark - I go to Gettysburg from time to time. Will you be at the next ROSfest? (I'm still undecided.)

The future is cloudy on that one. I need to see the whole lineup before I decide. What they have announced so far is .... not what I am looking for.

So, has anyone here ever tried a desrt called Tiramasu? It is made with coffee. My daughter made it for aprons at Publix and loved it. I am going to ask her to make it for Christmas.

Also, what about coffee add-ons? What creamers or adult beverages do you like with your coffee? Of course, Irish Whiskey is a given. Bailey's Irish Cream is amazing, but very expensive (the standard bottle is now over 40.00!!).

Keith, If I'm ever at an Italian restaurant, I order tiramisu for desert. It's always on the menu.

Every restaurant has its own recipe for tiramisu, and the differences are surprising, which tells me that there are many interpretations of what tiramisu is - or should be. But it's (almost) always excellent, and I "judge" the restaurant by the quality of its tiramisu.

To your other question - it seems like "coals to newcastle", but try Kahlua in coffee.
    Regards,

    Duncan

I'll be trying that on Christmas morning.

I recently ordered some Nestle's Cocoa mix at work. This morning I tried half a pack wit one French Vanilla creamer and topped off and mixed with Lavazza Crema Espresso. Very nice blend- the chocolate did not overpower, but really acccentuated the Lavazza flavor.

    Cold brew, anyone?

Time to poke this beast back to life.
So the other day I was in the store and while waiting to pick up a prescription I found This primula burke cold brew coffee maker.
Being a sucker for all things coffee, and it being on sale, I bought it.
This morning I ground up some utility beans and spent some time trickling water over grounds.
So by tomorrow morning ( according to the instructions ), I get to give it a sip.
I have had 'cold brew' at a number of coffee shops, with varying degrees of satisfaction.
You end up using a lot of grounds to produce a carafe full. Instructions say 1/2lb or about 227g. I managed to fit about 113g, filled to the top of the filter.

Any of you do this sort of 'brewing'?

I gave up coffee and caffeine 2 months ago, spent about a week in a weird kind of headache-y fog going thru withdrawals. I saw a website that said, "caffeine withdrawal can cause some people to lose the will to live." It wasn't anywhere near that bad for me but it was still a legit withdrawal. The last couple of days I've been wanting a cup of coffee but my morning glass of water with liquid magnesium and apple cider vinegar really satisfies that craving.

At least I have the satisfaction of knowing you had mine once (or about 5 times in one trip, if memory serves ) before quitting.

I think I may have had at least a dozen small cups of your coffee that afternoon; I was already battling a weeks-long sinus infection and the coffee overdose did a number on me that day. It was great coffee, though, 'twas an honor to partake of your legendary expertise, kind sir, thank you. To think of all the Prog Notables you've brewed batches of beans for!

You're melting magnesium in your kitchen every morning, throwing it into water, and you need coffee to wake you up?

I can’t do cold brew. Something about the way the grounds soak in the water raises my blood pressure. It’s the same with a French press.

Since it’s just me, no need to buy a coffee maker. I invested in one of these. Best $5 I ever spent.

You are extremely kind. On my best day, some musicians much better than I find my drumming choices exciting. On my worst day, no one on the planet makes coffee more thoroughly delicious than me.
