Night agent was okay. Good story, but some of the acting was sub-par, IMO. Felt like a mainstream network product.

We are going back in time a bit to 2016 and watching the HBO limited series “The Night Of”. Really digging after the first episode. Not sure how this one slipped by me when it was on.
How 'bout those first two episodes of the new season of Yellowjackets? Good shit!

^ Shit. I forgot the new season started.
“The red zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the white zone."
Started watching the old Kung Fu episodes with David Carradine on Plex channel. Also started The Last of Us on HBO Max.
OMG.
Succession tonight.
What an episode... that's going down in the history books as one of the all time greats.
I would also like to suggest that every acting award ever given on the Emmys be returned and then melted down to form three new enormous Emmy statues for Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, and Kieran Culkin.

^ I haven't watched a minute...but...aren't all of these characters rich, uber corrupt individuals? If so, how is this enjoyable television, regardless of the caliber of acting?
Serious question.
Part of it is the writing. The plotting and dialog are really, really good. It does shift between intense drama and great comedy with ease, often in the same scene (albeit, very DARK comedy). Logan Roy is this over-the-top individual who yet is quite believable. Three of his four children are hungry for Daddy's approval, gutted by his lies and manipulations, and greedy for taking over his significant but shabby empire. They are in constant competition with each other and it can get ugly, yet they are drawn back together. The older son, from a different marriage, is a whole 'nother tragi-comic thing. And all of the children, partially because they are so damaged by growing up in Logan's wake, are utterly unfit to take over huge media empire. Logan has told them at least twice "you are not serious people" because they just can't fathom the level he's playing at, let alone reach it. And then there's all these secondary characters who are equally corrupted by being in Logan's circle. And it is quite impossible to see which way it is going to turn.
I really didn't think it would be my thing either. I was certain my wife wouldn't. And yet here we are, into season four, watching as the Roy family is heading 100 mph into a very large brick wall. I have no idea who will be left standing at the end but I have to see how it ends.

^^^Yeah, it's that good. "Inflatable dicky-dick", such a great line. I can't believe they pulled out that plot twist, I surely did not see that coming.
The rich and powerful are always interesting even if they are truly awful humans.
That was an amazing episode and solidifies this show as one of the best all time.

The new HBO documentary on Jason Isbell is excellent. I didn't really know much about him, despite being a fan of his music and especially his songwriting, and the film goes deep into his history and relationship with his wife Amanda Shires, who is also a musician and plays in his band. There's a bit more focus on that than on the actual music sometimes, but overall it's very enlightening and entertaining, if you're a fan.
I suppose the same way The Godfather is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, despite being about murderous criminals. Succession is brilliantly scripted, directed, and acted (with an outstanding score by Nicholas Britell, always a plus for me). It's a character study of these children who received no love or guidance from their Shakespearean-level bastard of a father (the scenery-chewing Brian Cox in what is surely his career-defining role from here on out), and the way that has affected their lives into adulthood. The father is the only main character who is truly and irredeemably corrupt; the siblings each show flashes of goodness as they wrestle with their entitled but unhappy lives. They try to be more corrupt than they naturally are.
Last night was one of the most gripping episodes of television I've ever seen. As the show was starting, I needed water but I figured I would get up and pour a glass at some point during the episode. At the end, I was parched because I couldn't even *pause* the show to get up and pour a drink. My wife and I didn't say a word to each other the entire time. This is the only series to rival Six Feet Under for me. But then, I guess I am drawn to emotionally draining drama (with dashes of genuinely funny dark comedy).

I have watched half of it (plan to watch the rest later today). So far I am really enjoying it. I have been a fan of Isbell since he was in Drive By Truckers. IMO he is one of the most gifted songwriters out there today. A lyrical genius and a great musician. Looking forward to the rest of the doc.
You really need to give the show a try before judging it. I was not blown away by the first season, but seasons 2, 3 & 4 are some of the best writing and acting I have ever seen on TV. This show will not be for everyone, but for me it may be the best thing on TV right now.
^ Re Succession...I tend to watch a fair bit of cable news, so I get a lot of corrupt rich guys already. Still, I'll try and find a source to start at the beginning and at least give it a chance.
I finally got to watch episode #3 of “Succession” tonight. I won’t post any spoilers for those who have not seen it, but the more I think about the episode the more brilliant I think it was. As I was watching it, I kept thinking that the main storyline was just a con and what was happening was not really what was happening. In the end though, what happened did in fact happen. The way it was managed was completely unexpected and very gutsy for this show to do. It also treated the situation, happening in real time, how things like this happen in real life, often sudden and without pretense. It will be interesting to see where things go from here.
