    A Christmas Carol - movies

For my money, the best adaptation of this Dickens work is the 1951 Alistair Sims version. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the recent animated Jim Carrey version put out by Disney. I'm not a fan of the image capture animations that have become the norm in recent years, nor do I really like Jim Carrey as an actor but I have to say that they did a good job with it. If you enjoy the story and haven't seen this one yet, it's worth a look.
However, I will be watching the 1951 version on Christmas Eve with my wife and not Mr. Carrey's version.
Anyone have any other favorites of this one?

The Alastair Sim (no second "s") version has never, and will never, be bettered.

The staggering non-verbal acting with nothing but facial expressions by Sim never gets old for me, and I've been watching it for 60 years every year!

I love the recent Disney version, and was quite honestly blown away byt the 3-D version in theaters, possibly the best use of 3D I've seen. Last year I watched the 2D version on my TV and still really enjoyed it. Visually stunning, but also a strong re-telling. Carey is hit or miss as an actor, but was really on for this.

I don't think I've ever sit through the entire 1951 Alistair Sims version, always seems too grim for me. Guess I should give it a real chance. I did really like the Patrick Stewart version from about 10 years ago, it was a full cast version, not the one man show he had done on stage for a few years.

Actually, my favorite "Christmas Carol" is the Muppet one...

The Sim version is tops with me as well. I also thought George C Scott took a pretty good swing at the role, but it's always hard for me to see him as anyone but Patton.
And of course there's always Mr. Magoo and razzelberry dressing.

I saw the Mr Magoo version when I was about six -- I don't know how it would stand up for me now.

There have been several good versions but the Alistair Sim one is by far the best IMO. His Christmas morning transformation is positively joyous to watch, and when he later asks forgiveness for being a foolish old man, I must say I do well up a bit. He was an excellent actor who was in many films.

Every single year for the last 60, at the exact moment in the film when the guests at Fred's party stop singing "Barbara Allen" and Sim utters "Can you forgive a pig-headed old fool for having no eyes to see with & no ears to hear with all these years" to Fred's wife, I do more than well up & have gone through at least 150 tissues over the years.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit, but I've seen it so many times (when I was a kid I would watch it on NYC's Million Dollar Movie, where they showed the same film every night for a week, and I usually watched it at least 4 times) that I can pretty much repeat the screenplay verbatim from beginning to end.

Needless to say, to maintain my relationship with Kay, I either watch it alone or she grabs the ball gag! (j/k...really)

That's the spot in the film I meant exactly.

Alistair Sim. No question. Even my 2 girls (ages 8 & 10) love this film over many others they've seen. And the black & white version, to boot!

By Disney version, do you mean the version with Jim Carey as Scrooge? If so, I've only seen the version once, but I like it. I also like the one with George C. Scott(first saw it in school). What do people think of the tv version with Patrick Stewart? Or the Flintstones version?

The ones I grew up with are the Albert Finney one (saw it at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland on a class field trip) and the Mister Magoo TV cartoon (“Razzleberry dressing!”).

I'm a fan of the Sim one too. We watched about half of it last night but conked out. Maybe we'll make it through the rest tonight. Huge fan of the movie and the book.

I also liked the recording of Patrick Stewart's one man show too. He did a great job on that.

It just is Not Christmas for me until I watch the 1970 Albert Finney musical. I still well up at Tiny Tim's scenes. I don't understand why, when it was released, many critics panned the *score*. The score is exactly what makes this adaptation so original, uplifting & festive. And a 34 year old Albert Finney was very convincing as an old Ebeneezer Scrooge. In fact, after seeing on tv as a kid, for years, I really thought Finney was a much older man until I saw him in another film.

"Scrooge" is by far my favorite.

Put me firmly in the 1951 version BUT......... it must be in black and white. The colourize version loses some of the emotion for me.

Is there another Daevid Allen? (That's not really him above, BTW.)
