Which applies to about half the songs listed in this thread. FWIW, I just heard the '69 version played on Saturday. Most Beatles fans have never heard the 1963 version.

The hit version was an edit of the album track. Not live.

Or did you mean that you're personally more familiar with the live version?

I don't think it's been mentioned, but one that comes to mind for me is "Dreamer" by Supertramp off the "Paris" live album. I love the Crime of the Century album in general, but it has a dry-ish mix and for me Dreamer in the studio just doesn't work that well, although I think it was a somewhat successful single. The live version just has so much more punch and energy and was a hit as a single off "Paris"...I recall hearing it on the radio very often back then...

Although I'm not a Bob Segar fan at all(in fact he's one of my least favorite classic rock artists)I will admit that his live version of "turn the page" seems to be the definitive version of that song and a very good example of what I originally had in mine. It's also probably one of his best. I don't even think Metallica did it justice and I probably prefer Metallica to Bob over all by far.

As for ELP's "Peter Gunn" I don't think there is a studio version of that song. If there is that would be news to me.

Great call on this one. I've only heard the studio version once or twice, but the live version shows up on every compilation.

I guess ELP didn't record Peter Gunn in the studio, but several others (Pirates, Silencers and of course the original by Mancini) did.
If we play this game by the letter of this thread it's a legal vote though

I guess with The Kings' "Lola" it depends on the country. In Holland both version were number 1 hits.

I never knew Elvis did a rendition of that song.

Somewhat sacrilegious i know, but i've always preferred Phil Collins' take on Supper's Ready from Seconds Out to Gabriel's Genesis Live rendition, despite being a Gabrielled Genesis fan. It has a dynamism lacking in the other version, and musically speaking its far superior

    I'm with ya, Vonta.

So, this thread is about the live version being more popular, not better, right?

Actually, that is a studio version with crowd noise added.

    That's debatable.

Yeah, In "The King And I" he looked a lot like Yul Brynner.

It's the first version I heard. In places, it's better performed than the original is (some major mistakes on the original studio version....one of the few things about the remixes I approved of was sorting those out). I particularly feel live versions of 'As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs', in the tuned-down key and slower pace, are far better than the original...with the Foxtrot one, it feels like they are rushing to fit it on the vinyl.
