Thread: Genesis "new stereo mixes"

Not sure if there is a dedicated thread for these, but the AP 45 rpm vinyl of Nursery Cryme just came out; got mine today and it’s fantastic (Chris Bellman cut from the original tapes). Crushes the digital versions of this that I have (‘80s CD, 94DE, 2007 remix). I’ve never owned it on vinyl before, but considering how good this sounds and that it’s dead quiet, I doubt I’ll get the urge to sample vintage pressings of this album. This is it.

I have since re-bought all the 80's Charisma Genesis CDs. My biggest regret is I gave away my entire original YES CD collection when the remasters came out. Yea, gave them to a friend who was just starting to get into YES. Did it without even doing a side by side. I just assumed remasters were better, especially because all my music listening was in my car or on my ipod at the gym.
Same thing happened to me - Got rid of my early Genesis CDs when I the Years boxes came out... I knew little about people remixing and making changes... Same with my early Yes CDs - probably just like you got rid of them when the Gaswirt remasters came out. I was younger and less informed of course, so there was always an assumption that newer was better.

That said is that many of those early CDs barely had more than a picture of the cover when it comes packaging... most of the times over a black background and in the booklet, just partial credits, in common typeface. The remasters always added more elements of the original artwork and other elements, like art and lyrics from the original sleeves, etc. In that sense, they were a bit better; you got a better sense of what the original artwork was. It helped to to immerse yourself in the release.

Two things - 1) I was one of the people that happily left vinyl behind when CD, so at the time, getting the vinyl was not even in my mind 2) There was a different philosophy re: transfer from analog.

Destructive remixes like Nick Davis' aside, the remasters from that ear also had a criteria of above all, reduce noise. In fact, while we praise classical releases for avoiding the loudness war, their sins were of a different kind... and they ALSO applied to popular music recordings.. it is just that the loudness war was such a bigger sin, people did not pay too much attention to those. Namely the idea that any hint of analog tape noise was to be eliminated. Resulting in CDs that were BOTH loud AND duller than the original for popular music, while for Classical, well, just the dull part - a bit more acceptable, but still...

Nowadays, I don't think people notice, let alone care about a little bit of tape hiss... both in Classical and in popular music.

I like the 80s CD of Nursery Cryme a lot. Rubbishy packaging but honest sound.

I have a vague memory of reading on Hoffman that the original CD of Fragile was from poor copy tapes. The 90s Gastwirt remaster (and the later Rhino version) was from the original tapes.

Then again, I read that the 90s CD remaster of GFTO had some major speed issues and the original CD didn't! I'm not sure when that thing with 'Does It Really Happen', um, happened either. The version I first heard was the Rhino so I didn't know that was 'wrong'. I have to admit the relevant section near the end (after the big drum break, Downes' keyboard is supposed to fade up) is better on the original.
