    RIP Kinky Friedman

So long Kinky. Almost certainly the first person to write a comedy song about an active shooter situation.

Bassist Tom Fowler, best known for playing on many of Frank Zappa's most popular albums (Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy and Elsewhere, One Size Fits All among others) passed away yesterday.

Tom Fowler was my favorite Zappa bassist. RIP.

  8. #758
It looks like Arthur and Rhea's confirmations are all we are likely to get. RIP Tom. Fantastic bassist in many people's favorite Zappa lineup. Also played on Steve Hackett's 'Please Don't Touch' album.

The bassist Jimmy Johnson? Sad news but good that you heard from him. (Johnson and Tom's brother Walt Fowler play with James Taylor.)

I’m in another online forum where Jimmy is active. It’s not about his work….more about our mutual admiration of Alembic basses. A real down to earth guy. In that forum, he is always ready to help others with their basses.

I recently watched a dvd from The Band From Utopia to honour the late Ed Mann. Tom Fowler was also in that band....
    RIP

Tom Fowler also played in Jean Luc Ponty's band for a few albums after Zappa, and played with Ray Charles for several years.

    One of the greats.

Will always remember Duvall as Olive Oyl. Truly inspired performance in a very difficult role.

No, I am not being sarcastic.

I didn't know she was "troubled." Any details about that? Anyway, RIP Shelley.

I don’t know a lot of details, but she appeared to be suffering from some level of mental illness after she retired from acting back in the 00’s. She gave some pretty bizarre interviews on occasion including the infamous Dr. Phil Show interview that is sometimes hard to watch. Duval’s friends felt like she was being exploited by Dr. Phil. Dr. Phil claims that although the show’s promotional commercials may not have been fair, he stands by the interview and claims that his organization collaborated with her off camera after the show for more than a year to try to help her out. Where the truth lies is probably somewhere in between.

During the filming of The Shining, she was having some personal upheaval and Stanley Kubrick exploited it to keep her fragile during filming. I seem to recall her telling this story on an interview some years later. That performance was iconic but at what cost.

Yes, there is film of Shelley in a fetal position on The Shining set and Kubrick shouting at everyone to "leave her alone, don't comfort her"...l don't think he was aware of the damage he was doing.

A belated note about Tom Fowler from Steve Hackett:

"That is very sad news. Thank you for letting me know. He was a lovely person and a fabulous musician."
