The Wages of Fear (France 1953) by Henri-Georges Clouzot has various little photographic tricks for those who seek them. The remake, as a straight action film, Ice Cold in Alex (GB 1958), by the brilliant J. Lee Thompson, is not at all inferior. I also like Friedkin's The Sorcerer, with Roy Scheider - colour and bad reviews or not.
I almost forgot Sidney Hayers' Payroll (GB 1961) with Michael Craig, Tom Bell, Billie Whitelaw and many others. Clips were used to good effect in Oil City Confidential, but the original is fantastic and uses dramatic devices sometimes employed by later directors.

I showed that to my daughter when she was about 16, three years ago. She's still disturbed by it. I have a desktop picture of the girl in the radiator that I use every once in a while to freak her out.

I can't believe I forgot the magnificent 1945 French film "Les Enfants du Paradis" (Children of Paradise). The French "Gone With The Wind", made by director Marcel Carne mostly clandestinely while Paris was still Nazi-occupied!
It stars Jean-Louis Barrault, the mime who was Marcel Marceau's teacher & mentor, in the (speaking) lead role, playing, of course, a mime. The female protagonist is played by Arletty, the one-named actress that is currently being channeled by Marion Cotillard in both looks and acting acumen.
Do not watch it if you can't get through 3 hours & 35 minutes w/English subtitles.

As far as BW movies that are beautiful for their black & whitness, Carol Reed's The Third Man is outstanding as is Odd Man Out.
