Wow! Some really great ones are listed here. For favorites, I have to go with the Marx Bros. These still make me laugh out loud.
    Duck Soup
    Horse Feathers

Chaplin's The Little Dictator is wonderful.

Fave Christmas movie is B&W - 1951 version of A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim.
    When in doubt....

^^^^^ I was thinking the exact same thing. A Christmas Carol is a top 5 movie for me (no comments Geezer), and comedy doesn't get any better than the Marx Brothers. Good call, Johnkil!!!!

The Wages of Fear (France 1953) by Henri-Georges Clouzot has various little photographic tricks for those who seek them. The remake, as a straight action film, Ice Cold in Alex (GB 1958), by the brilliant J. Lee Thompson, is not at all inferior. I also like Friedkin's The Sorcerer, with Roy Scheider - colour and bad reviews or not.

I almost forgot Sidney Hayers' Payroll (GB 1961) with Michael Craig, Tom Bell, Billie Whitelaw and many others. Clips were used to good effect in Oil City Confidential, but the original is fantastic and uses dramatic devices sometimes employed by later directors.

"Psycho" is one of those very few movies that I watch just about every time it's on.

I'm a Flynn fan, too. My all-time favorite movie is "The Adventures of Robin Hood." What a killer cast!

    No.

But if you pay close attention to the club scene with The Yardbirds playing, you may notice a very young Paul Whitehead dancing away.

    Citizen Kane
    Casablanca
    Some Like it Hot
    Double Indemnity
    Young Frankenstein
    The Third Man
    400 Blows

All sound like good choices to me.

Maybe not one of the true greats, but what an ending!

Can't believe it. In Blvd, Joe Friday is throwing a new years party and having a good time, while Marshall Dillions' brother is a bad guy in 17. What's the world coming to?

You know, Eraserhead is what it is, but it's beautiful to watch in B&W.

Great movie that suffered by being released in the wake of "Dr. Strangelove."

I showed that to my daughter when she was about 16, three years ago. She's still disturbed by it. I have a desktop picture of the girl in the radiator that I use every once in a while to freak her out.

Yep, "disturbing" is really the only decent adjective I've found for that one.

I can't believe I forgot the magnificent 1945 French film "Les Enfants du Paradis" (Children of Paradise). The French "Gone With The Wind", made by director Marcel Carne mostly clandestinely while Paris was still Nazi-occupied!

It stars Jean-Louis Barrault, the mime who was Marcel Marceau's teacher & mentor, in the (speaking) lead role, playing, of course, a mime. The female protagonist is played by Arletty, the one-named actress that is currently being channeled by Marion Cotillard in both looks and acting acumen.

Do not watch it if you can't get through 3 hours & 35 minutes w/English subtitles.

As far as BW movies that are beautiful for their black & whitness, Carol Reed's The Third Man is outstanding as is Odd Man Out.
Orson Wells's Citizen Kane and Touch Of Evil are outstanding.
As far as great movies that happen to be BW, there ae so many.
    Some of my favs;
    Key Largo
    Maltese Falcon
    Kiss Me Deadly
    Out Of The Past
    Cape Fear (The original)
    Its A Wonderful Life
    Top Hat
    The Lady Eve
    Ball Of Fire
    Arsenic And Old Lace
    The Killing
    so many more

The 2 I picked only work, IMO, in black and white. It greatly helps to advance the portrayal of the characters and their situations.
