Thread: And the best Black and White movie ever is:

^^ Fonda is a good choice. Especially since it went against his typecast. Just a brilliant move.

I wouldn't know where else to start. Too many to choose from.

Have you ever seen Billy Budd? It was on TCM a few weeks ago. The last time I'd seen it was nearly 40 years ago.

It's a good movie and I think it was Terrance Stamp's movie debut. Peter Ustinov plays the captain and Robert Ryan plays the sadistic master at arms to great effect.

Hitchcock's "Saboteur" was on last night. He really had a knack for larger-than-life climaxes.

Who do you think are the great movie villains?

    My picks:

Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West. The most cold-blooded killer in movie history?
Robert Ryan in Billy Budd (which I just saw again a few weeks ago). A real sadist.
Alan Arkin in Wait Until Dark. Arkin in this movie epitomizes "menacing".
Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter. He comes across to me as a psychopath.
Ernest Borgnine in From Here To Eternity. Another sadist.
I love those old sea films and Billy Budd is right up there.

Starting to get my Holloween film list together. HHH of course, The Horror of Dracula and Salem’s Lot so far. Need a couple more.

I bounce really hard off "Brides of Dracula". The Baron Meinster is, well, just a bit too precious. Plus, not enough blood. It's a Hammer film. There should be buckets of the stuff.

For some reason I've seen only bits of a couple of Hammer films. I blame WNEW, WPIX and WWOR. They should have shown them more often! I think they preferred to show black & white movies for the most part. Or I did and just didn't watch those.

BoD is a given and I’ve seen it quite a bit. So this year I want to see films I’ve not seen in some time. I need at least three more.

Man, does THAT take me back to my childhood. I may live in suburban Pittsburgh now, but I grew up on the other side of the state and got both the NY and Philly channels.

Perhaps, but it does have the obligatory cleavage. And his mother is pretty creepy as a vampire. My only gripe with the movie is the MAJOR flaw in the baron's death scene.

I agree Ron. The death scene was a tad weak but I didn’t know a vampire could die that way. Worms out of the can?

Do you know the major flaw? It's actually quite hilarious.

When he was in the shadow of the windmill arms which formed the shape of a cross?

Yes, with the building missing. It was only the cross.

That might be the second worse plot hole I've ever seen.

This is the worst, imo (this is just an awful scene all around, from the lame dialogue to the questionable acting and poor direction):

Great triple feature on TCM tomorrow night. Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula.

I don't know why but as I was reading that list, this image of ol' "Zipper Neck" popped to mind:

Watching "The Invisible Man" with the great Claude Raines (1933) on TCM. I just saw it not too long ago. Great example pf pre-code cold-hearted violence in film.
