I haven't watched The Invisible Man in quite a while. If I remember correctly, there's a scene in which he's naked, therefore completely invisible, and he runs across a yard covered with newly fallen snow. The footprints in the snow are made by shoes not bare feet. A fun distraction from an otherwise great movie.

Saw it at Holloween. Claude was great. Well, at least his voice was. Ron, the old lady who ran the inn has a set of pipes on her too. I’ve seen her elsewhere. Still a great and fun film.

Una O'Connor, the screamer. She appeared in "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein" in the same type of role. I had to look her name up.

Never thought I'd have a chance to see it but I ran across Fear And Desire on Tubi. If you're not familiar, it was Kubrick's first movie, made in 1953, starring Frank Silvera and a very young Paul Mazursky, the five-time Oscar nominee who's probably best known for directing Harry and Tonto or Down And Out In Beverly Hills.

Kubrick, who was responsible for directing, editing, and the cinematography, worked for years to keep this movie shelved, supposedly destroying the negative because he felt it was "a bumbling amateur film exercise".

    I can see why.

Kubrick was originally a photojournalist for Look magazine before he entered filmmaking. You can tell when you look at some of the shots in this movie; they look more like stills rather than part of a movie. That said, there are plenty of instances where you can see the trademark Kubrick "eye" of composition.

The basic premise is four soldiers who are trapped behind enemy lines, trying to make their way to their side. There is a subplot that, in my opinion, can only be described as idiotic and completely unnecessary. The biggest problems with this movie are the plot and the dialogue.

Ordinarily, I would say to avoid this movie and it's follow-up, Killer's Kiss, which is a better movie if still somewhat mediocre. However, bingeing his first four movies over a weekend would show how quickly he learned – and mastered – filmmaking, given that he never attended film school. They are, btw:

    Fear and Desire
    Killers Kiss
    The Killing

    Paths of Glory

The third one is a solid three-star movie. The fourth, of course, is his first masterpiece (and the greatest anti-war movie ever made, imo) and won him the directing job for Spartacus.

If you do decide to see it, on its own, don't say I didn't warn you.

Ron, she's in your favorite movie of all time (in fact, I think you watched it tonight!) - how could you not know her name?

He did the 3rd XMAN movie. And is developing a spinoff wherein Cue Ball from Dick Tracy enters the marvel universe. Working title , Balls He's Bald.

Yes, that is correct. You'd think I would know her name since my head is a repository of useless information.

I've watched too much TCM over the last decade and now facts/names are starting to crowd my capacity for music and sports trivia. It's almost completely locked out the number of things my wife wants me to do.

    LOL!

My wife wants me to do all kinds of stuff as though you can simply begin by waving your hands.

"When are you going to paint the bedroom"?

"Well, we need to move all of this crap out before I can do anything."

    (silence)

    Granted, I am a procrastinator.

So I was thinking about a list of my top B/W flicks and I only came up with 21. I did some searching on B/W lists and can only come up with 21 decent flicks. Sure, thre's loads of MST3K but those aren't good flicks.

In no particular order except number one is...

    Citizen Kane
    To Kill A Mockingbird
    Arsenic And Old Lace
    Casablanca
    The Third Man
    A Touch Of Evil
Psycho - The only Hitchcock movie I've seen, go figure
    12 Angry Men
    The Philadelphia Story
You Can't Take It With You
    Ed Wood
    Night Of The Living Dead
    Godzilla
Dr. Strangelove Or How I learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb, IIRC
All Quiet On The Western Front
    Inherit The Wind
    Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
    The Elephant Man
    Raging Bull
    Red Badge Of Courage
    The Fountainhead

I just thought of another one but forgot the name. It's the dude in WW1 who was a sharpshooter, always licking his fingers and putting them on the barrel to help with the smoke coming out. Damned if I can't remember the dudes name. Sgt. York?

I may have not seen a lot of B/W flicks but the ones I have seen are pretty damned good. Funny how I've never seen Miracle On 34'th Street. I'm not into Christmas movies but this one escaped me for decades. I never knew about it until I was about thirty, no joke. By that time there was no reason to watch it.

Correct. But I always thought he licked his thumb to wipe it on the sight to remove dirt or glare.

You're missing out. That's a really good movie.

    Good list, btw.

That's a good list. I hvae not seen all of those. I could definitely add some.

I'll assume Young Frankenstein was an oversight.

"Some Like It Hot," possibly my favorite b/w movie! Sergeant York is right up there too, I love the Capra-esque qualities it has.

I forgot that Ed Wood is in b/w!

Arsenic and Old Lace is a household favorite.
All about Eve (because I love Bette Davis)
Certainly some of the Universal horrors.
    Jekyl & Hyde (1932)
    Many silents

Holy schnikey! Make that 23 then. Walk this way still makes me giggle. Wow, you totally blew my mind. How could I forget that movie.

There's probably a handful of others I've forgotten but I can't seem to come up with any more than what I have. So far. I don't think I can qualify Plan 9 as a good movie in any sense of the words "good" and "movie".

It is a good film no matter what time of the year it is. A respectable list also.

I hope it was an oversight. I like seeing Saddles and this movie back to back.

TCM ran some ridiculous comedies on New Year's Eve so I set the DVR: Spaceballs, Kentucky Fried Movie, and Top Secret. We've watched the first two. I will savor the last one like a fine wine.

Bringing Up Baby? The Grapes of Wrath? The Ox-Bow Incident? The Night of the Hunter? All great to excellent movies, imo.

BTW, a few more B&W Hitchcock movies you should seek out, starting with two must-sees:
Rebecca (often considered Hitch's first masterpiece)
Suspicion (which earned Joan Fontaine her only Oscar; it was also my first favorite Hitch movie until I saw Rear Window; I now consider Pscyho his best and one of the ten best movies ever made)

The Man Who Knew Too Much
    The 39 Steps
    The Lady Vanishes
    Foreign Correspondent
    Mr and Mrs Smith
(a rare screwball comedy from Hitch)
    Shadow of a Doubt
    Lifeboat
    Notorious
    (considered one of Hitch's best)

There are some others I thought were only okay; ymmv:
Sabotage (altho it does star the lovely Silvia Sydney)
    Saboteur
    Spellbound
    Strangers on a Train
(this is actually a really good movie until the end, which requires way too much suspension of disbelief)
The Wrong Man (the most tepid Hitch movie I've seen, which is a shame because it's based on a true story and stars Henry Fonda and Vera Miles)

I know this is a B&W movie thread, but since you've only seen one Hitch movie, I'll also provide a list of color movies you may enjoy:
Rope (Hitch tried to shoot this in one master take; i.e. with no edits; it's not entirely successful but it does make the movie compelling)
Rear Window (one of my favorites and Grace Kelly was never more gorgeous or sensuous than in this movie)
    Dial M for Murder
    The Trouble With Harry
(a black comedy with a young, enchanting Shirley MacLaine and an adorable Jerry Mathers; the cinematography is gorgeous, too)
    North by Northwest
    The Birds
    Frenzy
(Hitch's output after The Birds is evidence of his decline as a filmmaker, tho this one is the best of that bunch)

I would be remiss in not mentioning Vertigo, typically now considered his greatest movie. I disagree, by a wide margin, but whatever.

Stupid times demand stupid entertainment. I admit that Spaceballs is incredibly weak and KFM is peak sophomoric humor but I did see it with a gang of frat brothers when I was in college. It spoke to this band of drunken youths like an oracle. Top Secret. on the other hand, is nonstop hilarious. And if one joke doesn't work for you, there's another coming in 60 seconds. I remember Siskel and Ebert reviewing it and they spent most of the review just laughing and quoting their favorite bits. The East German Women's Swim Team. Latrine and Chocolate Mousse. The Cow! The Swedish bookstore. It means 'one whose bosoms defy gravity". Oh, and the goddamn Ford Pinto.
