"Tomorrow Never Knows" is definitively psych. I'd submit that "Rain" is in the ballpark as well.

True, they were already moving into that direction with those songs.

Get a gander at the wall behind this system. I think I need one of those Studio 2 plaques now.

    Yes, TNK definitely!

Some of the solo work from the period, but not really much more than that and what was already mentioned.

Not sure why you would think "Come Together" is psych.

I said maybe a little. Just seems to use those distorted vocals and imaginative emphasis on sound.

Listening to "Past Masters Vol.2" listening to "Rain." The bass is sick. I can hear the influence it had on Chris Squire.

The outro's great, it's just been played too much now.

And now I'm hearing "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)." . It's insane. You think they were high when they came up with it?

Just curious, how often did the boys indulge while composing and recording? I'm assume it wasn't Keith Richards/Brian Jones levels.

From what I've read (can't remember where), they mostly did NOT indulge while recording. I think it was Ringo who mentioned that they'd get high, jam around, think it sounded great, record it, and then the next day when they'd listen back to what they'd done, it was pure crap.

Are you, by chance, thinking of a different song?

No, I'm just saying the song is aurally interesting, I know it's not technically what you'd call psych.

Okay, that's cool. When you mentioned distorted vocals, I thought you were thinking of another song.

Could you imagine if Squire was so influenced by Paul he had used a Hofner bass instead of the Rick?

McCartney did play a Rickenbacker on 'Rain'. Both he and Squire started using it around 1965.

For a single volume, the Anthology book is essential.

I'm not sure the information is entirely clear on that, i've read where there was a Burns Nu-Sonic used on some of those sessions as well. Who cares, one of the best bass lines in recorded music.

Can't Buy Me Love by Jonathan Gould is amazing. Puts them into historical context well.

The Mark Lewisohn "Tune In" series will be the be-all end off of any Beatles story ever published. Volume one is incredible and truly riveting. Not only the detail, but the storytelling. It is out of this world. I have the short version of volume 1 and it's over 800 pages, ending only at the beginning of 1962. I'm dying for the next volumes, but it will be years.

Anything that Lewisohn did is great. Much of it is historical reference. But, he got tired of waiting for the true story to come out. So, he did it himself.

But, to me, the Anthology is the best single volume. It's the official story presented by the band themselves. Can't go wrong.

I'm reading the Hunter Davies book off and on - it seems too much of an oral history: so and so said, then Paul said, than this old teacher said, then this German girl who held Stu's cock said...

Doesn't the Hofner have sort of a cheap reputation?
