All the usual suspects (Tangerine Dream, Goblin, Frizzi, Vangelis, Carlos) will get covered (nice to see Myrow's & Seagrave's Phantasm get a mention), so here's a track from Christian Bruhn's music for Timm Thaler. The CD's come down in price, too, so jump on it if you can dig it.

If you ever get to watch this series, it features not only the greatest performance of a living (!) actor (Sean Harris), but one of the most intriguing soundtracks of all time since the early Dr. Who.
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (David Shire).

If 12-tone funk isn't progressive, I don't know what is.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Danny Elfman yet. Granted, he's done plenty of herky jerky, playful soundtracks for comedies and family films and tongue in cheek/kitsch B-movie sci-fi and horror tunes.

BUT Some of his darker, twisted, less comic (but not necessarily always 100% serious) soundtracks are wonderful. I'm thinking for example of Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Batman, Nightbreed, Darkman, Dolores Claiborne, Sleepy Hollow, The Wolfman, Dark Shadows.

Of course, I suppose that we're not talking of musical movies' OST here.

Because that would exclude Tommy (which is a full-blown musical movie), but not Quadrophenia (which is a "real movie with plenty of great music)

    =====================

in terms of musical movies, here is only two of them that I consider proggy:

    JC Superstar
and Milos Forman's Hair : the bradway musical was already quite good, but the film's music is soo much stronger with that amazing bass player

    Opening and closing scenes:

Yes, indeed. When I finally saw this film again after so many years (bought the 3dvd-version) I searched for the soundtrack, but I don't think it's there.

There is a CD with some of the music of this film, but that concerns a George Zamfir-track.

Here's a nice interview with Bruce Smeaton, the composer of those Mellotron-based tracks: http://www.runmovies.eu/?p=2784

Not prog, but would be very appealing to fans of symph-prog:

Jerry Goldsmith, Legend - far, far better than the Tangerine Dream music and a lovely mix of orchestra and electronics. A classic IMO,

Howard Shore, The Lord of the Rings - all three as a single work - fine development of motifs,

John Williams, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and A.I. - again, very advanced combination of orchestral and electronic textures. Make sure the "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" recording is the complete one,

James Horner, The New World - beautiful stuff, with JH's frequent collaborator on keyboards and programming Ian Underwood, of MOI fame

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?
