Fan...but i'm not holding my breath for an album this year nor for it to wow me...reiterating that i felt like Lateralus should have been a watershed "we're BACK! who knows what's next!" album...and then they followed it up with material that felt like more rhythmically-dense but all the same B-sides FROM that album FIVE YEARS LATER!?...and now we'll be a DECADE plus? methinks their staying power has worn thin but their arena rocked corporatism sure shuts me the hell up and they can release anything to be eaten up and lauded beyond reason.

I get it... But all kidding aside, if you heard one tool, you heard em all. Great musicians can lack substance and imagination, even with edgy subject matter. I feel stuck on one track with Tool. Anyone else?
Yes, all the Tool I have heard so far sounds the same to me, and it sounds boring. Just patterns repeating over and over and becoming more dense toward the end of the track, and a very depressing, cynical, misanthropic mood. It is IMHO bizarre that this thing is going by the same genre label - "progressive metal" - as Dream Theater or Ayreon. Sure, it has characteristics of metal - perhaps "technical doom metal" - and I can understand why it is considered "prog" - length of the tracks, oddball time signatures, but that's about it - but "progressive metal" is a designation of a particular musical style which emerged when prog bands used elements of metal. Dream Theater are prog in a metal garb, but Tool? Yet, words always mean what they are used for, and people call Tool and similar bands "prog metal", so be it.
Definitely disagree. You can hear a progression through their recordings in order, even if it's gradual.

I've loved their music right up to 10K Days. Other than "Vicarious", that album was pretty bad. MJK's heartfelt songs dedicated to his mother seemed awkward and slapped together.
Aenima and Lateralus are IMHO one of the best back to back releases by any band. Too bad they shit the bed after that. I don't hold out too much hope for their next cd. I think Jones , Carey and Justin just can't write any original music anymore, as 10K Days showed us.
Oh well.
i might be inclined to agree but there're posts of their's saying they're trying to really push the envelope again etc. we'll see but i too am sort of dubious. their heyday is over.
also try posting any of what we said on any Tool fan page and be prepared to die...their fans these days are borderline like Dave Matthews Band fans.
I know there were some legal troubles blocking them from moving forward with the latest album but really, they're the only band whose interval between albums approaches that of Boston.

Big Tool fan here, probably one of the bands that I've listened to the most over the last 20 years.
As has already been said Aenima and Lateralus are two exceptional albums and even 10,000 Days has its moments, but a UK/European tour wouldn't go amiss!!
exceptional is exagerated , IMHO
But those are the two that I will retain.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
I guess I'm a "fan," being that I love a couple of their albums, but I don't feel like they've really existed much in the last 10 years, and that's too bad - they could have helped to fill a pretty large void that occurred during that time, insofar as popular rock-related bands. They've toured fairly consistently, but since the 10,000 Days shows the tours have been quite short and usually geographically concentrated. No album since 2006, either.
I Be a Fool for Tool
I got all enthused by Tool about the time of Lateralus, went back and bought some earlier stuff and an album or two that followed.... but I gotta admit, I kinda lost interest. They're pretty much a one-sound band, and their sound gets old.
If they have a new album, and if it sounds substantially evolved, I'm probably interested.

Can't say I am a fan, as I don't own anything by them, but I can say the song SOBER is one of the greatest songs of all-time!
The intensity and passion in it never fail to send shivers down my back...!

Well, if you really like Sober, you should dig in to Undertow and Aenema. Both are excellent, and have a lot of that intensity and passion.
