I just finished blowing out our driveway. It's a long one and I can't imagine doing it and the sidewalks with anything other than a gas-burning snowblower. Yesterday we had snow coupled with a steady 45 mph wind so the last thirty feet of the driveway was clogged by a drift almost two feet high. Plus it's about minus 25 windchill so I had to really bundle up to get it cleaned out. I have to drive out to get my wife's Rx this afternoon so cleaning out the driveway couldn't wait. Our summers are the stuff of dreams but winters up here can be a fucking challenge to survive.

Back in the '15 snowpocalypse, the town plow kept plowing me back in every time I shoveled things out, making multiple passes trying to widen the plowed part of the street. The 3rd time around he took about a foot of my neighbors's sod out and kept going around the block for another pass. The 4th time around I stood in the way and waved him off at my property.

We have lived in a condo now for almost 15 years and love it. I completely stay out of board politics. Most of the things people get bent out of shape about are things that I just don’t care about, so I ignore most of it. I could not even tell you who our board members are. As for the condo fees, ours covers snow plowing in the winter, all mowing / yardwork in the summer, garbage, sewer, water, and any outside maintenance. We also have a clubhouse that can be reserved for events and a pool in the summer months. When my wife and I were working, we worked a lot of hours every week. Since we have recently retired, we are on the go all the time and travel a lot, so it is nice not to have to worry about yard work and dealing with tons of snow. Condo life is not for everyone, but we totally dig it. We just stay away the condo politics.
The thing about condo/coop type deals is the surprise of major repairs.
Several buildings in my neighborhood have had really big assessments for balcony replacements, structural issues, building wide plumbing, etc.
It's bad enough in a single family home with that sort of stuff, but at least you see it coming. Home inspections and the like.
Buying into a building and going by whatever 'engineering reports' are available ( if you even have the choice )...nah.

We have not run into anything like that so far, but we bought our condo new (while it was being built) so our building is only 15 years old and the oldest building in the complex is probably around 20. I guess it is possible as the complex ages we could eventually run into some of that kind of thing.
This is the view outside of our condo this morning. It is supposed to continue to snow all day. This is why people who own houses here all own snow blowers. That amount has fallen since last night.

I'm happy to live in an older neighborhood where the houses are small and the lots are big. I can keep my curtains open and not have to worry about my neighbors spying on me.
No HOA. Screw that. I get it that they want to maintain certain aesthetic consistency in the neighborhood, but nobody's telling me I can have a garden or a shed.

No HOA where we live but then again, we're in a painfully small town. My neighbors to the west are built far too close to us and their house is a constant irritant. It's light siding reflects the sun painfully, their massive family room addition is all windows and looks down on our bedroom and backyard. Not to mention they're both atrocious people. They used to winter in FL but haven't the last two years. They never leave home other than to visit their children because they're two old provincial narrow-minded fucks that don't travel even though they have the means. Right now I have to lower the blinds in my office because the reflection from their house is blinding me as I sit at my laptop. Fuck them with the heat of a thousand suns.

I was pissed that our neighbors got goats and put up a goat shed which means that whenever they're out there feeding the goats they can easily look in our bathroom window (about 80 feet away). After 20 years I had to install a blind on that window, lol.

My neighbor keeps plowing my driveway for me once he's done with his own driveway and finishes clearing out his business property, and he won't take any money from me, the bastard. If I send him a text thanking him he invariably replies with a middle finger emoji.
We're considering moving back to the Twin Cities at some point. There's a ton of variables in play and it's not a sure thing. But one thing for sure, I don't want to be in a condo or townhouse. Our pets are annoying (to some), we treasure privacy, and I don't want to throttle back either my stereo or my guitar volume. So if we do it, it's going to have to be a small house with some privacy and distance from neighbors.

I used to not mind shoveling/blowing snow so much, but I've developed some degeneration and arthritis in my lumbar spine, and have to be exceedingly careful how I operate both the snowblower and the shovel. Two weeks ago I felt things start to go south while working on the front stoop, and sure enough, last week I stooped to try and catch something I'd dropped and -bam- I was on my knees seeing stars. Started PT again today, and I'm really hoping for no more snow for at least a week. Part of the problem is that I'm a very poor exerciser during the winter months, and right now my core strength is probably at an all-time low. I'll turn 61 in a few months, and I'm not ready to succumb to this yet! Grumble...

Happy with what I have to be happy with.
I have a double driveway and never have an intention to shovel. I love my snowblower. When there is a huge snow pile at the end of my driveway from the plow, I push the snowblower really hard and definitely got a workout from that part of the job. I really shove the snowblower back and forth.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)
yeah, the street snowplowers could be a real pain for the hand shovellers, partly because the melange of slush, salts and snow is much heavier and yucky and often made us come back to refinish the job.
A lot of times, I'd push the stuff back on the road, so the next plow could pile it up on the side between two driveways.
I always worked from the garage to the street in case the plower happened to drive by if I was still busy.

Anyone here who are runners or walkers have any experience with Metatarsalgia (severe pain in the ball of the foot)? After I retired I made it a goal to try to walk 3 miles per day as often as possible. I have been doing it (weather permitting) but am now having this condition in my right foot. I looked it up on YouTube and bought a shoe insert which has helped a bit. I also had to see a podiatrist about an ingrown toenail problem and he gave me a foot pad and some stretches which has also helped. But……the bottom line is I still have this pain and not sure how to get rid of it without just completely stopping walking, which I don’t really want to do. So far I have no issues on my left foot.
Just wondering if any of you other geezers have had any experience with this and if so, how did you get rid of it?
