Thread: Misheard prog lyrics

    Misheard prog lyrics

The Flower Kings - "Love Supreme" (from Adam and Eve)

    @ the 14 minute mark:

"I'm just a shitter in the wind!"

I've heard it that way since it was released in 2004, and I can't NOT hear it now. It takes me right out of the song, but it's funny as hell. For the record, the real lyric is "just a shimmer in the wind."

What are some of your humorous/silly/stupid misheard prog lyrics?

"A weevil in the web that he made". Tarkus by ELP

"Marmots come out of the sky and they stand there". Roundabout by Yes

I both cases I was disappointed when I found out the real lyrics.

"I'm the scab of the Earth" which, I guess, is really "Armies scatter the Earth."

For years I thought Jon Anderson had a sense of humor.

    Not so.

If we trust the lyric sheet for Close To The Edge, apparently line at the end of the piece is "Now that you find, now that you're whole". I always thought it was "Now that you find, now that you're home".

I always heard "silly human race" as "see the human race".

And in Sound Chaser, I swear when I first heard that album, I could have sworn the word "imbecile" (with the last syllable pronounced like the word "aisle") somewhere in there, but when I hear it now, I can't suss where or why I thought that word was in that song.

The first verse of Afterglow, I had totally wrong. I thought it was something like:

As the dust settles around me
I must find a new home
    Raising hopes
That you'll still give me shelter

That's what i get for trying to learn the lyrics off a live album.

Speaking of live albums, I swear I couldn't discern one single word on Space Ritual, save for the spoken word pieces. I got the words for Master Of The Universe from the lyric sheet that was in In Search Of Space, but the other songs, most of them, I had didn't find out what the words were until I got that lyric book Hawkwind sold on tour during the early 90's. And I think even that didn't have Born To Go and one or two other songs in it.

    "She was in a bathroom
    full of strange aromas"

Marillion, "The Party" (it's "She was in a back room...")

And there was some vinyl Marillion bootleg where the song "Charting the Single" was miss-written as "Catering the Single." LOL. That's a whole other job.

LOL. You were like "They think weevils spin webs?"

I have a Genesis bootleg on LP where the band's name is rendered as "Gensis" on one of the handwritten labels, with a note acknowledging the spelling errror.

    It's actually "Armies gather near"

Karn Evil 9 3rd impression: Guardians of a nuclear dawn - I thought it was "a new clear dawn" until I saw the lyrics.

I seem to remember that on the original LP of Brian Salad Surgery, the lyrics read "new clear dawn" but Lake pronounces it more as "nuclear". I think that was a deliberate pun.

I don't know about prog, but when I first heard Jimi Hendrix singing Purple Haze I thought he was gay. "Scuse me while I kiss this guy."

    Rush - Circumstances

This is right: All the same we take our chances, Laughed at by time, Tricked by circumstances, Plus ca change, Plus c'est la meme chose

What I thought I was hearing: All the same we take our chances, like pie pie pie, tricked by circumstances, we lose our shorts, loosen the mention.....the more that things change .....

"Go, Stanley Snail" rather than "gold stainless nail."

The Keneally/Gilbert/D'Virgilio tribute act Stanley Snail is famously named after this misheard lyric from Siberian Khatru.

David Letterman and Paul Schafer once joked about that line because so many people hear "douche."

    Genesis--"Return of the Giant Hogweed"

What I heard: Part-time evil creature stirs
    Actual lyrics: Botanical creature stirs

In Marillion's Sugar Mice, I always thought it was:

"So if you want my address, it's number one at the end of the bar, where I sit with the broken angels, clutching at straws and nursing a scotch"

The real lyrics of course, being "nursing our scars"

    ...

    I still like mine better!

    Agreed.
A nuclear device would definitely bring forth a new clear dawn (with everything cleared out of the way).

The line from "Thick As A Brick" "he coughed up a tenner on a premium bond win." Not surprisingly this line was a bit strange to people in the Midwest like a friend of mine who misheard it as "coughed up his dinner."
