    Congrats! You will love it.

Thanks Did some light noodling the other evening, it's definitely fun. The touch plates give me a "I've got a Buchla Easel for Kids!" warm fuzzy vibe

Exactly! It is a smile-inducing device that takes up hardy any room.

Not sure I would like those touch plates. Prefer something moving under my fingers. I'm not that fond of the touch strips of the Keystep. You never know where you have stopped the modulation strip.

Being what the Microfreak actually is, I think you'd be ok with it. I don't play it like a normal keyboard. It's more a fun toy to F with that sounds very good. I list as a bit unconventional and unique. Others may / may not agree, but that's how I see it. I think Batts is having a ball with it!

Yeah, exactly It's not going to be anything I'll use as a MIDI controller-style keyboard. I've already used similar components in the Eurorack world so I know what to expect. For example, it says it does polyphonic aftertouch but that isn't really true. There's no pressure sensitivity whatsoever. What it ACTUALLY does is measure the AMOUNT of contact your finger makes. So if you just touch your fingertip to the key it responds but if you flatten your finger down onto the surface you can increase filters, change LFOs, etc..

One of my favorite uses for a touchplate surface like this is not so much playing melodies, but rather as a very intuitive way to handle things like complex sequences or arpeggiators.

    Anyway, just my $0.02...

For those interested that haven't seen this yet:

Free Behringer Plug-in Vintage. Getting the license may take a few tries as they are getting hammered, but the download was quick.
Just got it. May try it this weekend time permitting.

I've tried the Behringer Vintage. Looks nice, but the manual is very, very basic.

Meanwhile, setting aside the swirl over live and the future of professional musicmaking for a few...somehow "Asian synth porn" feels especially bad but in this case, I'm all in

New offering from Arturia is definitely not for everyone, but very definitely was for me: https://www.arturia.com/products/sof...ngtze/overview

Got the "crossgrade" price of $29 (not 100% clear what I was crossgrading from but whatever...a deal's a deal). These sort of "exotic" instruments are a ton of fun for me, and while I wasn't too hot on them at first (felt too much like a cheap swing at Spitfire), the Augmented line of synths has grown on me. The Augmented Piano in particular has some great presets that just immediately sparked some fun noodling and even song ideas.

Interesting, but not at this moment. The whole Augmented series looks interesting as well.

They aren't particularly good "bread and butter" synths. I wouldn't go to the Augmented Piano to find a good simple grand piano patch, for example. But for interesting textures as well as inspirations, I'm finding a lot of enjoyment from them.

It's definitely NOT something that is going to have the widest audience

Re:Augmented Yangtze. I always chuckle whenever I see the Chinese string instrument pipa mentioned. In Polish, my native language, pipa has a bit of an obscene meaning.

For Grand Piano patches I have V Piano. But other textures are always interesting.

V Piano is really excellent for most of my "bread and butter" piano use cases. I also really like the Spitfire Felt piano sound, but that's still a bit more niche.

Augmented Piano has really lovely granular textures and things that just work well and sit nicely in a mix. It's also the first time I've really messed with using one of Arturia's synths with one of Arturia's controllers (a Minilab 3) and it was definitely nice having all the functions mapped to knobs for quick/easy twiddling.

And it looks like Cherry Audio finally has a new synthesizer coming.
    https://cherryaudio.com/news/its-time-has-come

I wonder what it will be. Some think it will be the Chroma.

I want a SH-5. Yes, I know, Behringer. But a software version would be cheaper and had a memory. The Behringer comes with an analog quirk my first synthesizer also has. It has to get warmed up, before it gets in tune.

  18. #2693
Interesting vibe to that trailer! The color boxes definitely hint at a Rhodes Chroma.

Ugh, yeah...most of my analog gear has that "quirk" too. With the band I always had to remember to fire up my rig about 30 minutes before we would actually start rehearsing or playing, so the Slim Phatty would warm up enough to get "in tune." Ultimately swapped it for a Hydrasynth Explorer (not analog but honestly sounds more than sufficient in a live setting).

Yeah. First let my Roland warm up and then I could tune it, which was quite a job, because both tuning-knobs were stepless, so not like for instance like the MiniMoog.

Okay so first off, credit where due: thanks JimmyG for pointing this synth out to me last night

Secondly, holy GAWD the first 30 seconds of this video are what this thread is all about

It isn't the cheapest synth (around $180), but with the MPE possibilities I have to admit being tempted. Maybe a super-duper early (or super belated) Christmas present to myself!

Also, I'm absolutely loving the various gear on his desk. I see a Touché to the right (the wood oval paddle-looking thing), but I'm especially wondering about the red fader box, as I've been looking for something like that to use with some of my sample libraries (Spitfire for example, lends itself really well to 2-3 sliders that you can move somewhat simultaneously).

$ 180 for one soft-synth is a bit steep, I have to admit. But the prices of seperate Arturia instruments are in the same range. The first 30 seconds of the video makes my mouth water. I really need that big price in the lottery. Don't need a Lamboghini, or a luxurious 10 room appartment. I just want that studio.

Yeah, it is. I have a bad habit of seeing "MPE compatible" and just immediately jumping to "I'll use this!" but in truth, MPE support is becoming more commonplace, and I need to really decide if another analog polysynth is going to really benefit my existing stack. Or if I'll noodle around with it, say "yeah, that's cool" but never find a real place for it in my work.

Somewhere in that maze of knobs, I'm pretty sure Zimmer has Chris Franke's original Moog system from the early TD stuff!

Arturia is has a good price for their packagedeals, but not so much for seperate instruments. Cherry Audio is doing better for seperate instruments and I think they offer MPE on several instruments.
