Thread: Synthesizer Gear Porn ;-)

The price is definitely a draw on the Grandmother...but, in truth if I was going to go that route I'd likely buy one of these and stuff it with modules of my own choosing:

    https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...oller-keyboard

It wouldn't be anywhere CLOSE to the GM's price point (hell, the empty case is already more expensive than the full GM), but I like the idea of a fully customized keyboard synth with slightly unorthodox oscillator/wave sources. I put together this speculative setup for a Waldorf "shell" a while ago based on mixing Polivoks-type components with more grungy/distorted filter types and the like:

    https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/615277

By the way...anyone who is considering a dive into modular, or planning a system of their own, do yourself a solid and create a free account on modulargrid.net. It's a fantastic resource for planning out systems, researching different modules and the like. I've got several (private) modular blueprints for my home setups, and it makes it sooooo much easier to stay organized.

Not likely - I'd probably go for the SubPhatty (who are dreaming up those names at moog? ) if I'd go for a mid-priced mono. One of the Voyagers would be a dream of course.

Might be of interest to folks here, and a few days left to go: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...pt-synthesiser

<$300 4-voice polysynth. Already over 200% funded so it IS happening.

    Demos sound pretty neat.

Those are Sculpts are cool synths, I'd like to have one, but I wonder how much push back a keyboardist would feel about that keyboard? Seems pretty unnatural at the onset.

  5. #530
For the price, IMHO the keybed is fine enough to noodle a bit...as in the vids, I'm looking at it as a very affordable 4-voice 32 oscillator polysynth engine I can trigger from another keyboard for more robust playing

Oooh, just checked and it has 2 hours to go and is almost to 300%. If that stretch goals happens they'll make one in BLACK

  6. #531
Not that anyone is necessarily nail-biting on this or anything...but the campaign succeeded at 297% funded. Since it was so close, Modal has decided to go ahead and offer a black model anyway. So...my love of all dark musical trinkets continues to be satiated

You can't make dark music with a nice, happy white synth

Minor bonus cool thing...Modal hopes to incorporate MPE and polychaining down the road. If that happens, it means you could chain a few of these together for a pretty impressive polysynth, and with MPE-style gestures too.

In case anyone did a "wha?" for polychaining...or maybe just because I feel like gushing about it:

If you have two Skulpts, with polychaining you could link them via MIDI or USB and then set them up to respond like a single synth, effectively doubling your polyphony.

I actually went ahead and sprang for two since the price was less than $250 each...so with polychaining I would have an 8-voice 64 oscillator polysynth. And with MPE added as well, I could control them from a Linnstrument or Roli and get the multidimensional expressions. For just around $500. That isn't too shabby.

And...it'll be BLACK. Because that's really the thing that matters most.

Congrats John, sounds like a great plan poly-chaining them to have 8 voices.
I've always liked the Modal 002 but the $4000 price range was too much for me. Would've meant selling off some of my prime gear and most of the synths I have and use now are irreplaceable.
I realize Skulpt isn't a 002 or 008 but it is a Modal product and I like the filters they're using.

It's funny about a year or more ago I made a comment on a synth forum that Modal needed to offer a lower priced version of the 002/008 or another synth which was more affordable and I was practically run out of the forum with negative comments.

Nice to see Modal realizes it can't just be a high end synthesizer company and needs to diversify in order to compete.

Please provide us with some audio demos once you get set up.
btw when is the estimated date of production and shipping?

ETA looks to be November, so if all goes well maybe I'll be able to take it along for the family Thanksgiving holiday

That thar Sculpt looks and sounds tasty. Sadly I've got no budget, nor studio room.

Yeah, I understand. I could afford it, although I've no earthly idea where I'm going to put it

One of the big uses I hope to have for the Skulpt is for travel...it looks like it'll fit perfectly in a suitcase so I can take it along on road trips and other adventures where I don't necessarily want to haul a full-size synth.

If it did poly aftertouch, I might -- MIGHT -- be willing to start saving up/donating blood toward an 8-voice model.

Not really, but one could dream.

So that's why they dropped the Moogerfooger line last month.

I bet these two boards will be very impressive. And yes, I too wish I could afford it.
