I wonder if there is a market for my Casio VL-1 . I may still have it around somewhere, if the batteries haven't melted down.

You laugh but you'd be surprised what suddenly becomes all the rage. Ever want to know what your masterpiece would sound like if you had a Speak n' Say? Wonder no more: https://www.audiothing.net/effects/speakers/

    There is. The CZ-101, too.

Absolutely! They are one of the most sought-after Casios.

So my LUMI Keys arrived and I noticed the battery appeared not to be charging properly. I became a bit frightened after reading threads about the issue on Reddit, Facebook, etc. Some folks even bricked their unit by running the battery down. Roli released a firmware update this week which appeared to fix the issue. Either way, I've used it only with a power source.

The sounds in the included plugin are top notch as are the MPE performance features. I still want to tweak the pressure envelope a bit. The biggest gamechanger for me is using it as a wireless Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad, especially with MPE friendly synths like Animoog Z, etc. It lets me capture quick inspirations in AUM and will help as an idea generator. Ironically, I still haven't tried out the use-case I bought it for -- an MPE controller for the Skulpt SE.

Pittsburgh Modular does good stuff, and "east meets west" semi-modular boxes are definitely having their day right now

    Anyone knows this:
    https://u-he.com/products/diva/

According to this guy, it's the only analog soft-synth one needs.

I notice that in the last 2 video's both guys are using the same tiny keyboard controller.

I've looked into the u-he Diva before and it is interesting...but I'm good with the Arturia and Cherry Audio synths to be honest. Their emulations are outstanding, and in terms of original synths stuff like Dreamsynth and Sines are pretty excellent.

And I actually own a Keystep and it IS a pretty great mini controller. I like that it has actual 5-pin MIDI ports in addition to USB, making it easier to hook into some of my synths directly sans computer. And the keys feel pretty solid with a decent aftertouch range.

I'm fine with Arturia as well, but the Diva catched my interest. At least it's easy to order and pay in The Netherlands, besides it looks very versatile. I just downloaded the free synthesizers U-he had on their site.

I have a Keystep as well, but it looks different than the keyboard in the video, that looks like a Keystep 37.

Cool, if you spring for it you'll have to let us know what you think!

I'm not springing for it yet. At this moment I think I have a tablet on my wishlist. And perhaps at some point an updated version of Cubase Pro.

But I will try the free software I downloaded.

I've tried the free softsynths and they sound nice. You can play with aftertouch, which is always nice. There is one thing to watch. If you download the free Zebralette, you also get demoversions of the Zebra 2 and the Dark Zebra. So when installing one might only install the Zebralette.

Speaking of terrific and 100% free synths....Surge XT is still amazing and wonderful:

I have the Surge, but I can't get enough free synthesizers.

    Two others worth noting then:

    Native Instruments Kontakt Player
    Spitfire Audio Labs

Just now discovering this thread.....I can't stay away from synth-nerd talk!

u-he has some surprisingly great and unique sounding free synths: Tyrell, Podolski, Zebralette, and I think a few others sound outstanding!

And Full Bucket has a ton of great emulations of older Korg synths (Mono/Poly, Poly800, PS3100, etc.), also all free.

The Cherry Audio stuff, while not free, is amazing for the price, especially when compared to other options out there. I love Arturia, but Cherry's GX80, Elka X, Dreamsynth, and others are well worth the $30-$60 pricetag....and they have a free MG-1 that's pretty fun.

I downloaded and installed the free U-he synths. Just also added the Tyrell, which could be downloaded for free from another website.

I actually use the MG-1 all the time! It may not be the most versatile synth, but man it can really cut through a mix with very little effort.

Here's a small/fun freebie that does just one thing, but it does it really really well (bonus, it can do MPE!).

Ooooh that Karp one sounds nice!

    Some other notable mentions:

    • Green Oak Crystal gets super deep. I don't use it much nowadays, but from a sound design standpoint, there's a lot there!
    • TAL Software has a couple of freeware plugs (many are now old and unsupported), but I remember their Juno 60 being really good. They have the Juno chorus on there for free, I think.
    • IK Multimedia has (or used to have) a free version of Sampletank, and Syntronik which is pretty good for all the typical old-school vintage synths (almost like an answer to the Aturia V collection....sort of).
    • Digital Suburban's Dexed is an excellent DX7 emulator, and can even be used as a librarian/editor with the original!
    • Some really cool Kontakt libraries: Hollow Sun (Polymoog, Bass Station, Speak and Spell), 99Sounds Project Exodus (really cool sound design/effects), Rhythmic Robot, and SonicCouture.

I know I have others.....I used to have a TON when I was on Windows (back when I was too broke to actually afford any software).

Downloaded some of the Full Bucket stuff, but don't know how to install them.

Yeah, Cherry Audio looks good as well. Found some retailers in The Netherlands. I wonder how several of their synthesizers compare with their Arturia equivalents.
It would be a though choice between the Arturia V collection and Cherry Audio synth stack.
Arturia V collection has some other keyboards, besides synthesizers. Cherry Audio synth stack offers Memory Moog, PolyMoog, Oberheim 8-voice, Elka, Arp Quadra, Roland Jupiter-4 and some other stuff Arturia doesn't offer.
But well, my wallet has other priorities.

I think the GX-80 is the first Cherry Audio synth I've gotten that also somewhat exists in the Arturia collection as the CS-80 V4. IMHO the GX-80 wins hands down, except that the CS-80 V4 can handle MPE (which matters to me, but not so much most others to be honest).

Of the vintage emulations, the Elka-X, Memorymode and Lowdown are fantastic. I think where they truly shine though is their original synths like Dreamsynth and Sines. Dreamsynth in particular is a treasure chest of inspiration.

Oh and one other free one to mention, since some of you appreciate an orchestral palette: Spitfire has a free plugin called BBC Symphony Discover that is pretty darned remarkable for the price: https://www.spitfireaudio.com/bbc-sy...estra-discover
