    Gregg Allman - RIP

    Rumors started up after he cancelled his tour so while I'm not surprised it's still a terrible loss. RIP to a music pioneer and one of greatest to sing the blues

    I cannot think of a single musician who means more to me than Gregg Allman in the rock world. He was one of the most talented vocalists in rock music. I saw the Allmans on a three night stand in Boston about seven years ago and it was a transcendent experience. He is such an immense giant in musical history. I cannot begin to find the eloquent words to express my grief and my appreciation for Gregg. Very sincerely sorry to his family.

    I bought a signed lithograph with Gregg standing on a country road that I framed and will cherish.

    Damn. RIP. It's a bit cynical to say, but given his history, making it to 69 is pretty impressive. Love the Allman Bros.

    A great singer and good songwriter. I caught the Bros. a number of times back in the glory daze, including the famous Fillmore East recorded performance. I didn't see this one coming. Sad......

    I can only imagine the kind of show the Allmans gave during their original run.

    Great vocalist, fine keysman and songwriter, lyricist - and an interesting "outlaw" personality.

    First two Allman Bros. Band albums for me. Plus Brothers & Sisters and Eat a Peach. And some Fillmore. 26 years since I last saw him live this summer.

    Absolutely gutted. I've seen the Allman Brother's a dozen times and Greg solo a few more. R.I.P. Midnight Rider.

    I loved his music and his voice, and some of my most favorite songs I've sung in all my years in cover bands were his.

    One of favorite singers of all time. I was playing the Allman Brothers this morning while staining my deck. A real loss to rock and roll. RIP Gregg

    Dude lived hard that's for sure. Sex, drugs, rock-n-roll and Cher.

    My favorite albums are still the last 3 or 4 they put out, but yeah, an incredible musical legacy he's leaving behind.

    Wow, goodbye to one of the great ones. Can't say he didn't live life to the fullest.

    I remember back in the late 70s I saw a live performance of Midnight Rider on Don Kirchner, my first exposure to the Allman Brothers. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. But since they would re-show the episodes, I heard it quite a bit and really started liking it. I always preferred that version to the studio version. The Allman Brothers really were a great live band.

    Without ABB, Gov't Mule probably wouldn't exist at all, given that Warren Haynes and Allen Woody met when the two of them joined ABB, if I'm not mistaken.

    I think I saw them about 11 times, between 1993 and 2006. Always put on a great, long show.

    I have one solo album by Gregg, I'm No Angel. Haven't played it in years. I remember thinking it was lame. I should spin it, maybe my opinion will change.

    I saw the Allman Brothers on the last tour with Dickey Betts. I went because a friend took me but didn't get into their style of music with the lengthy jams since I never cared for "jam bands". I found the show boring, and the psychedelic stage lights didn't help either, since I was completely sober. I'm honestly surprised Gregg Allman lived as long as he did, given his history of substance abuse in the past.

    27 years since I first saw Gregg on the Seven Turns tour. 2nd row seats from a connection at Ticketmaster. Good times. Thanks for the music.

    For fans of odd time signatures, Whipping Post starts off in 11/4

    Here's a quote from Gregg about it.

    I didn't know the intro was in 11/4 time. I just saw it as three sets of three, and then two to jump on the next three sets with: it was like 1,2,3—1,2,3—1,2,3—1,2. I didn't count it as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11. It was one beat short, but it didn't feel one short, because to get back to the triad, you had two steps to go up. You'd really hit those two hard, to accent them, so that would separate the threes. ... [Duane] said, 'That's good man, I didn't know that you understood 11/4.' Of course I said something intelligent like, 'What's 11/4?' Duane just said, 'Okay, dumbass, I'll try to draw it up on paper for you'

    Never seen The Bros. but I've seen Gov't Mule once. I'd imagine they will do a nice tribute to them.
