That was my thought, just because that's about all that could fuck up Christmas, other than a tree falling on the house or something. But here near NYC we're not going to get hit too bad. I'll keep the salt handy though.

Again, preparedness is a good thing, and for areas that don't normally see this kind of winter weather, like the southern U.S. for example, I get that the point needs to be driven home. I'm just getting tired of shaking my head at how - like you say - overwrought it's all becoming. Are these weather forecasts, or excerpts from the book of Revelation?
I agree 100%. This is Canada in the winter. 10cm of snow, even 30cm of snow, and -25C is to be expected. As someone posted on Facebook earlier...Southerners, prepare for doom. Northerners, get your heavy coat out... Or something like that.

    EDIT: Found it!

Well, today we got the news about your winter as well.
And I wonder, why should I care, unless it distorts the travel plans of the people I will be taking care of their animals, while they are away, traveling to the US.

I can't say that this is a normal Winter storm. It looks like Antarctica out there.

Wind is starting to pick up here, so snow starting to blow around pretty good.

We have some years where we don't have any significant snow until January, so it can be a crap shoot.
It now takes longer for the lakes to freeze over. Extending the lake effect machine longer into the cold season.

Just spent the morning with my 80yo neighbor and three paramedics! She stepped out for a smoke slipped on the ice and banged her head on the front step! Ok, so now I gotta go out in the ice field with a blanket…. Can’t let her lay in the ice storm. Called 911. The fire truck made a spectacular 180 degree spin in the cul-de-sac and stopped right in front of her house. They got her back up and settled. Left her home as All E/R’s are full of fall & crash victims. I stayed with her until a daughter arrived. She’ll be fine…. I then sprinkled de-ice on her driveway and porch. I’m humble, but truly wonderful…

Look in on your neighbors today! I’m so thankful she held on to her phone during the fall.

Lake Michigan never completely freezes over, but sometimes up to around 75% will, which has a big impact on lake effect snow.

I am so stupid. I spent $250 to tune up my snowblower and just assumed they filled it up. We'll shovelled through a huge mess on my and neighbour's driveway (they're on vacation). It was brutal but couldn't get me machine to start. I just checked the gas, empty!! Holy fuck. Works fine now.

Reminds me when we were in Sortland in Norway. The locals were sunning and sitting outside and we though it was rather cold and wanted to sit inside, where the place was empty.

I have a friend who moved to Florida from Michigan about 10 years ago. When he first moved down there he was always making fun of Natives who thought it was cold when the temp dropped below 70. Now that he has been there a decade, he is the exact same way. We go down to visit and he is all bundled up when it gets in the 60's. Kind of funny how you get used to your environment. Here in Michigan in the fall everyone is bundled up, but in the spring if the temp gets above 50 people are walking around in t-shirts and shorts.

I had a friend who lived in Yellowknife for several years. When he returned to Toronto, we would be bundled up in coats, gloves, scarves and hats on cold winter days and he just wore a fleece lined jean jacket most of the time.

We have a wet Christmas, temperatures around 50 degrees F.

People whose animals I will take care of next week, are traveling to New York tomorrow. Hope the situation is improving a bit.

Somehow the humidity here kinda makes the cold stick to you. Yesterday I opened all my windows and turned all the ceiling fans on to air out everything. Today it's cold and rainy. The rain is freezing.

Just last month, some woman mockingly asked me if I was warm enough. Because I was wearing a jacket, and she wasn't.

It's 48F today. I'm wearing a t-shirt, under a flimsy sweater. As long as there's no wind it's not that bad.

So after the storm last week, we're now supposed to have daytime temperatures above freezing for the next two weeks with a high of 10C (50F) on Friday, and rain for the next few days. On the plus side, all the snow should melt. But on the downside, rain plus melting snow while the ground is still frozen is a recipe for flooding.

It's already mostly grass everywhere here. Not much snow to melt, apart from small piles at the sides of parking lots, etc... it was a white Christmas, but only just. Mostly a dusting of snow and strong cold winds.
