Thread: Stoner!

I play these California stoners non-stop in my car:

If you decide to get into this band, "We Must Obey" and "Start the Machine" are for completists only; they drifted off into a punk rock sound on these albums.
You say Mega Ultra Deluxe Special Limited Edition Extended Autographed 5-LP, 3-CD, 4-DVD, 2-BlueRay, 4-Cassette, five 8-Track, MP4 Download plus Demos, Outtakes, Booklet, T-Shirt and Guitar Pick Gold-Leafed Box Set Version like it's a bad thing...

anyone listen to Unida? gets lots of great reviews but imo they are a bit over rated and some of the props are exagerated a bit.

I just listened to Heads On Fire by White Hills and I'm in the middle of Soma by My Sleeping Karma, both just acquired last week and all I can think of is this.

Glad you like 'em! With the Beggars, the ones to start with are Another Way to Shine, Mantra III, Ad Astra and On Fire. The first 3 have "Spice" on vocals; On Fire has "JB" on vocals. That's Per Wiberg from Opeth doing the keyboards you hear occasionally. They did another album with JB, "Demons" which I don't have yet, wasn't that crazy about the samples I heard. Their most recent "Return to Zero" has a third new vocalist, I've heard it on Youtube; it's okay but doesn't blow me away like the other stuff.

If you like JB's vocals, he has another band called Grand Magus, which may or may not come under the stoner category. Each album is different in style from the next so listen to samples before buying. One album is very doomy, another is heroic metal a la Manowar, etc.

Grand Magus, to me, is classic metal. I'm a fan. I think JB's vocals fit that style better than stoner. Stoner rock is about sparse vocals, which should never be the focus of any song. JB's voice is too strong and tends to over power the music. The debut Spiritual Beggers is still my fave of the 4 or 5 I own.

I just saw a pretty solid documentary on the lead singer of Pentagram-Christ, that guy is lucky to be alive! So where does Pentagram fit in with the whole stoner thing, if it all?

I'd say Pentagram were one of the early progenitors of the genre. Not a band I knew back in their heyday though...

I listened to that from home to work this morning and then from work to Walmart this afternoon. Heard most of it in that time. I wonder how many other people in Walmart were humming Glowsun tunes

I'm deep into WMO and I think it's great. Punk or no punk, I love this album. I bought it here http://www.allthatisheavy.com/info.a...m_num=ATH-4129 but it's only $3 +shipping at Amazon.

I got mine from All That is Heavy also. I like "We Must Obey" better than "Start the Machine", but quite a bit less than any of their other albums. Their latest is a return to form ("Signs of Infinite Power") although there's still a song or two that sounds like it belongs on these other two punk-ish albums.

Well, they started out as a doom metal band, so I guess they are on the boards of stoner (due to the savage Sabbath riffing). By their 3rd album Wolf´s Return, they switched to a more NWoBHM influenced style that led them on the full blown (and boringly mainstream i.m.o.) heavy metal of Hammer of the North and The Hunt.

It sounds pretty retro in most cases... and quite uniform, really...
Yes, it's interesting that I'm so drawn to this music considering I didn't care for Sabbath at all and was lukewarm to Led Zep back then. I didn't like Ozzie's voice and thought their albums always sounded so compressed.... yet when all these modern bands reach back to that sound I can't get enough of it. Maybe it's just being tired of hearing digital recordings and music made with ProTools that I like the sound of something real, with dirt under the fingernails, warm analog music...

How do you tell the difference? I'd have to have someone point it out to me.
but speaking of the Sab/Zep influence, this is a Small Stone sampler: http://www.amazon.com/Sucking-70s-Va.../dp/B00006O0PQ

Received my order from All Things Heavy yesterday. They even threw in a free CD! I can't remember the band name but one of the guys was in Kyuss. The owners also included a handwritten note thanking me for my business and wishing Happy Holidays. This was my first order and it won't be my last. They seem like very cool people.

Unusual stage setup for Lo Pan - the (rather large) singer stands behind drummer!
