Thread: Stoner!

  1. #2026
^Reminds me a little of Don Caballero but more stony and less mathy.

I love Bandcamp’s genre descriptions. “Post-stoner,” to cite one example.

No takers on the main board, perhaps here this post will have more interest.

Just had a listen to the latest album from the band BIG SCENIC NOWHERE - their latest THE LONG MORROW. Already mentioned the band in the beginning of this thread with their previous album. This one is a stunner as well, listen especially to the title track. It starts at around 17:09 minute, truly epic track.

I always pre-order new Weedpecker. I LOVE the name Big Scenic Nowhere. Thanks for posting that video. I like that more than enough to investigate them

Pretty cool... I hear hints of Mastodon and Elder in the guitars.

All Them Witches stopped by KEXP to film a short set. It’s pretty spectacular, too.

Big Scenic Nowhere’s albums are available from Heavy Psych Sounds Records. (Physical copies are mostly sold out on Bandcamp.)

Their roster of artists is pretty impressive: https://www.heavypsychsounds.com/bands.htm

And a few of those bands are playing together at the Milestone Club in Charlotte on August 26: https://themilestone.club/calendar

Are you gentlemen familiar with a band called Mammatus? I stumbled across them today, and they sound very good. I’m feeling lazy, so look ‘em up on Bandcamp!

    Stoner?
    Feeling lazy?
    Inconceivable!

I checked in on this thread for the first time about a year ago. I've added a lot of bands to my list (Mammatus just went on there) and discovered a whole lot through just poking around. Thanks to everyone for providing descriptions and links and listening.

Here are a few bands I've been digging lately. Some are stoner, some are doom, some are heavy psych, some are desert stoner (???), some defy or slip amongst categories.

Kryptograf: They're more heavy psych than anything. They are from Norway, and they sure do love some Black Sabbath. Witches and Satan and all things black magic feature heavily in their lyrics.

Dommengang: It would seem that their earlier albums have more of a west coast, acid western-type vibe going on. Wished Eye, their latest, is particularly fuzzy and groovy though I haven't gone back through their back catalogue.

Howling Giant: More doomy than stoner-y, but there's more than a little bit of pop around the vocals, too. "Cybermancer and the Doomsday Express," despite its very stoner title, is basically a sing-along pop song. Keys are a cool addition.

Sasquatch: They've been around for a while, so I'm guessing y'all have encountered them before. They play a heavy, fuzzy stoner similar to Wo Fat, and I fucking love Wo Fat.

Kanaan: Instrumental, psyched out, jazzy. Less jammy than a band like Earthless. Their drummer is the new Motorpsycho drummer. Downpour features a guitar solo from Hedvig Mollestad.

Spaceslug: Very much a doom band. This Polish band mixes synth-y soundscapes and huge, sludgey fuzz.

Greenlung: A band whose name tells you pretty much all you need to know. They sound like a more classic rock version of Weedpecker (another bands whose name tells you all you need to know).

A few other bands--Lowrider, Weedpecker, Kadavar--have been mentioned here, so there's no need to rehash. Hopefully there's something new/exciting in here for y'all. Again, this thread has given me a lot; hopefully I can give some back.

Does Weedpecker know what “pecker” is slang for here? Maybe, but not what I’d call my band. Now if Spaceslug has some good merch…

I would use Schwanzstucker as a name for my death metal band.

Here's a new one I've been listening to ever since the erstwhile Yves posted it on his FB page.

A while back The Atomic Bitchwax offered their entire catalog as a download for only 5 bucks. I thought they were decent enough but it really didn't grab me. Fast forward to this 2022 live video and WOW, they are incredible as a live band! This smokes!

Matt - I randomly clicked on a track called "When The Witches", and it has a TOTALLY bitchin' guitar solo! Really amazing in headphones. So cheers!

^Those Kryptograf albums are pure joy. Hopefully there are more to come.

Just read that Boss Keloid should have a new album out by the end of the year.

    Same for Big Scenic Nowhere.
