Looking for a singer for collaborative projects

Hi P.E:ers,

I’m looking for a male lead singer that would be interested in trying some collaborative prog projects.

All styles considered, though decent dynamics and pitch, as well as some power are preferred, and you should feel comfortable with tight harmonies. You should also be fairly comfortable using a DAW and have the ability to record your singing with good quality.

It will be pure studio projects so distance collaboration is no problem, and no specific deadlines set. I don't expect any revenues, but should any such happen, all participants would be in for a share.

Right now I’m working on a quite ambitious symphonic concept album (with a slight taste of metal), about the extent of a double LP. Unfortunately the intended lead singer had to end the collaboration as he has developed some voice problems.

I'm curious about this type thing, but don' t know much about DAW yet. I have Ableton Live 9 Lite. So is the way this is done, you send a file with what you have via email or maybe a Dropbox, and someone loads that onto Ableton (or whichever DAW they have), add on their vocals, and then send it back to you? I'm just curious. Trying to learn more about this type thing. Curious as to if you wanted the vocalist to supply the lyrics. Thanks.

Yes, that's more or less how such collaborations happen, technically. To utilize the possibilities of DAW even more, I usually send a couple of audio files, with the song divided in separate parts called stems, each file containing a separate submix of drums+bass, guitars+keys, guide vocals, guide harmonies etc. Then the singers can create his/her own mix to their own liking in their DAW. Regarding lyrics, sometimes it's more or less finished, but I think it is more fruitful and rewarding with true collaborations rather than using "hired guns".

Interesting hFx. Thanks for the response. I was not familiar with the words stems, but yeah, I guess just a way to divide the song up more into parts, which make some sense. Good luck with your songwriting.

There are so many ways to collaborate using the internet. But it requires some confidence in each other. There is no easy way to coach and produce another musician from a distance - not actually being there to express your ideas about the part.

If they lived in another country I guess you could converse by phone or maybe use Skype or something similar. I think it's probably some of the same things though that happens in real world bands where the musicians have to convey what they are wanting, and also how some egos gets bruised in the process, which leads to bumpy relationships in a band. It's an uneasy alliance for sure. But yeah, the net can give you a lot more of a pool to draw from, which is a good thing.
