Aliens: Romulus--I liked it. If you like the franchise, you'd probably enjoy it. Alien 4 was the worst for me.
Hundreds of Beavers--Amazon. Slapstick comedy. Got a lot of critical praise, but for me I enjoyed it for a while, but went on and on and on. Sort of Roadrunner vs Wile E Coyote stuff.

I've only seen Hiroshima, Mon Amour and Last Year at Marienbad. His documentary short, Night and Fog, is on Max, I believe. I've yet to see it but it's on my watchlist.Originally Posted by Progbear

LYaM, otoh, perplexes me – but in a good way. Narratively, it's closer to one of Lynch's "strange" films than the French New Wave Renais is regularly lumped in with. I've seen it three times, now, and I still don't entirely know what's what.
Something I've always thought would make a great double feature is Last Year at Marienbad and Bergman's Persona.

Not yet, not that I know of, went to the theater. It was pretty great tho, had some tension I wasn't expecting plus some surprises.
Watched Immaculate (2024) a decent Italian convent horror story on Kanopy starring Sydney Sweeney.

Fast paced home invasion thriller with a twist. Nice sprinkling of dark humor too. Very good time with this one...loved the ending.

I'm sure the beavers were pleased. Some guys only last a couple minutes.
The Ice Storm (1997)
Ang Lee's family drama set in 1973 New Canaan Ct. is one I watch every year around Thanksgiving, when the movie takes place.
There was an actual ice storm that hit the northeast in December 1974. I was in 6th grade and remember it fondly for we had no school for a week before Christmas.

I remember that storm. There was at least an inch of solid ice on everything. Hard enough to skatre on.
A really well done movie, helluva story though not exactly the feel-good type.

Tank Girl (1995). Total goofball action-adventure flick set in a postapocalyptic Australia, complete with kangaroo-human hybrids (one played by Ice-T) and an eeeeevil Power and Water Company led by a beautifully eeeeevil Malcom McDowall. (I just looked up his filmography, because I mostly know him from A Clockwork Orange and Star Trek: Generations. Damn, he's one busy lad!) Anyway, it's one of those movies where you don't want to engage your brain too closely; but on that level it succeeds brilliantly.

Civil War I caught a view off YT. I was interested in watching it, altho I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed. I don't know exactly what I was expecting. I think the news reporters always being right there in the heat of action was a bit unrealistic for me--not that I would know. It's still worth recommending tho.
I had the same feeling when I first saw it in the theater, but I recently re-watched it knowing that the story was being told from the perspective of a press photographer and I enjoyed it a lot more. I think my original expectations were off of what the film actually is, and knowing that the 2nd time it resonated more with me.
Random blast from the past: got a fancy-schmancy deluxe 2 disc edition of The Blair Witch Project (99), supposedly rendered for the first time as true 16mm. Not everyone loves this film. For me it's a desert island flick and it was a thrill to watch again (pretty interesting feature-length documentary as well, plus maybe half a dozen alt endings and more). Region B so it took a small bit of "coercing" to get my player to recognize the disc, but worth it.

I still remember seeing it in a theater when it first came out. It was one of those movies that I thought about a lot after seeing it. I agree with you that it is a masterpiece. A lot of films have tried to copy it's style over the years, but the original is still the best.
The documentary is very interesting and insightful; the movie that we ultimately got was NOT the film they set out to make. It's fascinating to see the different paths along the way and ultimately to see the final choice end up a bullseye.
Same thing with the alternate endings; none radically change the outcome but there are subtle differences as well as some that are more "explicit" with what's happening at the end. They are interesting to watch but in the end it feels like they absolutely picked the right one for the film.
