Am I the ONLY heterosexual male who has wondered why for more than 30 years it's been at least quasi-accepted that lesbian sex scenes, whether acted by straight or gay actors are OK, but it's only recently that you even occasionally see two gay men kissing on screen, and scenes of two men in bed together, even without erotic activity, are even more rare.

    Just askin'

The Hunger is a very good one, especially considering the stature of the actresses. You have to hand it to Sarandon, she was willing to do some daring scenes. Bound was pretty gratuitous but no doubt Gershon was smokin'.

Memorable ones for me I would throw in are The Wild Side, with Joan Chen and Ann Heche, pretty much borders on hard core porn; Mulholland Drive with Naomi Watts; Henry and June with Uma Thurman; and at some point I saw a flick on cable called Desert Hearts which was about a somewhat older divorced woman having an affair with a younger woman which was pretty erotic and realistic.

Re the male-male scenes in movies, I would ask--do heterosexual women find an all male sex scene as erotic as we hetero males find all women sex scenes? My inclination is no--we are far more 'pervy' in that sense. But maybe it's a double standard.

My wife questions this all the time and yeah, I think the studios are more queasy about it than the audiences.

I've seen others but they usually have the signature of a man's misconceived notion of how lesbians make love, which doesn't preclude them from being good but, unfortunately, they usually are.
I saw an interview with Susan Sarandon where she talked about how, in the script, the scene called for Catherine Deneuve's character to get her drunk, then seduce her.

Sarandon apparently fought to have the inebriated aspect be dropped because she felt it was demeaning, as if a person would have to be intoxicated or otherwise not in control of their senses to be seduced by someone of the same gender. Also, she said she didn't care if you were man, woman, gay or straight, if you need to be drunk for Catherine Deneuve to be able to seduce you, there's something seriously wrong with you.

Well, the lesbian stuff was "accepted" because straight men (well some of them, anyway) find it titillating. And somehow, that's all that matters, in the big business of the entertainment world, though I don't really know the timeline for the first this or the first that in this arena. I know LA Law had what was supposedly the first same gender kiss on American prime time TV, but I'm not sure what followed.

BTW, as a side note, the Logo channel used to have a program called 5 Gays 1 Girl (or something like htat). It was basically a panel show, initially with five gay men being asked questions by a woman, sometimes relating to sexuality or gay politics, but sometimes other things like, "How do you spend Christmas" or "What's the most embarrassing thign you've done). EVentually, they started doing episodes where the panel was made up of lesbians, and in one of those episodes, it was established that the ladies could "tell" that a lot of girl-on-girl porn is really done with straight women, you could tell because of their long fingernails and they were doing things real lesbians "would never do", apparently.

So they generally don't find girl-on-girl porn to be interesting (which isn't surprising because I've always been told women don't really "do" porn the way men do), at all, never mind titillating. But, one of the ladies said she liked watching gay male porn, because "They look like they're having fun".

I've always been told, including by a few of my lady friends, that women don't really "do" porn the way men do. On the other hand, Playgirl was initially marketed pretty much toward women, as a counterpart to Playboy. It was only later in the magazine's existence that they started playing to the gay male demographic.

We finally saw The Quiet Place. There are some things we could nitpick on but no glaring plot holes. No one saw the youngest take the batteries for the toy so that's not a hole. You had to suspend disbelief about alien creatures but beyond that there wasn't anything to insult your intelligence. Blunt, as always, was incredible. Kudos to Krasinski for sure direction and some smart writing.

I was told once on another forum that there is a particular studio that cranks out "short films" of ladies for ladies. The title has the word "heart" in it but I can't remember the rest. But yeah, the rest are pretty much faking it. Then again, straight porn isn't exactly known for being that believable either.

Yeah, my question was largely rhetorical, and I answered it myself with my next sentence. I've never heard any hetero woman say that she was or would be turned on by 2 males together, even if they were Brad Pitt and George Clooney--in fact that would likely further repulse them, which is the opposite reaction most hetero men would have re 2 gorgeous females together. But then again, I'm not hanging around a lot of women that have even seen 2 males in an erotic scene....the younger generations might see it differently.

Re Sarandon in The Hunger, I don't think they dropped the drinking aspect altogether--my recollection is CDen gives her some wine to drink, and Sarandon either out of nervousness or "tipsiness" spills a little bit on her white shirt near her ample bosom, which then leads to the seduction.

No. I've often thought the same thing. Personally, I got over the whole lesbian thing quite some time ago... thanks to my ex. Funny thing is, nowadays when I see two men I have the same reaction as seeing two women: nothing.

I went to a birthday party 20some years ago with my ex. The woman having the birthday was a lesbian and almost all the guests were as well; I was one of only two men there. I was kind of excited to go. Boy was I naive. Only two women there, besides my ex, would talk to me. I've never felt more invisible. It was like the tables were turned. That was probably when my interest in lesbian sex scenes waned.

There's been a niche market for lesbian porn for quite some time. Haven't seen any tho. There's also a niche market for straight porn for women that was created by women producers & directors who supposedly removed the misogyny and made it more woman friendly. Never seen any of those, either.

One of the hottest les scenes is in Blue Is THe Warmest Color , which is loaded with explicit scenes, boardering on hardcore , but with out the graphic closeup anatomy shots. It got a lot of mainstream attention a few years ago.
    High Art is another .
As for male /male , watching 2 sets of boobs giggling about is infinitly more interesting than a sword fight.

There's an extremely erotic and controversial lesbian scene between Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz in the film Disobedience. We're talkin' flat-out primal lust.

    The Bloodlands

Caught this on Netflix last night. English couple move to Scotland to buy a fixer upper house in a relatively secluded area. Soon after moving in,
locals invade home and take husband. No new ground here. Pretty much your basic home invasion film, with the exception that the invaders are
all wearing hog masks. The wife is played by that chick from the Walking Dead. The leader of the garbage dump people. She does a very good job
in this film covering the entire gamut of emotions. Not gory, but certainly adequately tense and suspenseful. Not bad!

Count me as one who simply never got the appeal of lesbian scenes.

I probably can't convert you (you Neo-Prog hater!), but I really enjoy most of the songs in "Moana." You might want to give that one a try. They're a lot of fun, and catchy.

    Gutland (2017)

A surrealist rural noir about a German thief who flees to a small Luxembourg village only to discover that the locals have secrets of their own.

I liked it, reminded me of the Wicker Man.

Really beautiful cinematography & acting. Not for everybody, Mission Impossible it is not.

Very good film, and as usual, an even better book.

I couldn't tell you what's a good or bad "lesbian scene". I'm not that highly evolved, in case you haven't noticed. I do I liked Vampyros Lesbos. Yeah, it's a cheap exploitation film, but it's a sexy womn

There was a great episode of The L Word where one of the girls starts dating a woman who calls herself Uta Rafeson (i.e. Nosferatu spelled backwards, in case you didn't get the joke), her apartment has no mirrors, etc. Anyway, so when Uta and Alice start making out, you know what fades up, in the non-diegetic music, to accompany this scene? Why it's the theme music from Vampyros Lesbos! They got points with me for that one, as if I hadn't already been enjoying the show.

For good, refer to Wild Things, with Neve Campbell & Denise Richards.

So which show do you like better, The L Word, or Designing Women?

Wild Things is just a damn good B-movie, utterly outrageous but damn most of that plot worked. And it had Bill Murray as the ultimate strip-mall lawyer. And for the ladies, Kevin Bacon's dingus.
