FEATURED CD: Satin Whale - Lost Mankind

The first two albums (this and Desert Places) from Satan Whale are pretty nifty. I'd like to get my hands on legit issues of both.

    Review from ProgArchives (hdfisch)
When SATIN WHALE recorded their second output they have found more to an own discrete style on the one hand but unfortunately they've lost some the power from their debut as well. Thus with good reasons after that one and their Live record "Whalecome" they vanished in the haze more or less. The album starts a bit tame with the first three tracks but with the 11 minute + long "Go Ahead" comes certainly the best and most versatile track on here with great sax and flute play. "Trace Of Sadness" is a powerful organ driven rocker, "Song for Thesy" is very much dominated by flute, reminding a bit to FOCUS and has some nice drum and marimba sections between the vocal parts. Flute plays as well an important role in the final track "Beyond The Horizon" besides the good ol' hammond. Thus overall far more than 50 % of this album can be considered as very good 70s Art Rock. Certainly worth 3 stars!

yup, bought this record back in 1980...import...bargoony. I like the band. i had earlier discovered them when I bought "As A Keepsake" on a whim. Then when isaw this one for a couple bucks, it was a no brainer.

Didn't realize this was so rare. Seems like just a couple of years ago I got this new on CD--from Wayside, I think. Now some joker on Amazon is asking $128 for a copy.

I've only got the Whalecome live 2LP. This didn't impress me very much, I think it's ok but somewhat directionless.

Desert Places is the only one I’ve heard.

Very good album but a step down from Desert Places, IMO.

I quite like Desert Places, but this one never did much for me.

Looks like there is a Satin Whale box set now out with their studio releases:

    http://www.mig-music.de/en/releases/satin-whale-2/

Amazon says it gets released January 14th, but the label page says it is out now. Either way, I think I am in for this. Price is good. Barry Palmer, vocalist from Triumvirat and Mike Oldfield, was the lead singer on their last studio album - was a little poppy but I always liked his voice.

According to the description on that record label page, there will be. “ the second box set (released a few months later) contains the live album, the remix album and the soundtrack “

Lasers Edge has the new box set. I just ordered one.

Is this box set the first ever official reissue of Desert Places? I know pirate label Germanofon reissued it ages ago.

Die Faust in der Tasche is the soundtrack, obviously, but what is this remix album?

Merry Christmas to me. This was in my mailbox when I got home today. Listening to Desert Places and it sounds fantastic. Packaging is a basic “chubby” jewel case, nothing fancy there but nice and sturdy. The booklet is all in German though. Ah well. This is great stuff!

I have it and I agree on the packaging. I would have prefered something simular to the Bröselmachine box-set. More pictures in the booklet, more artwork and more information on the line-up, like guests.
