Djam Karet - What is Your Favorite, Where Should I Go Next?

A good share of the prog I listen to is instrumental. I have three of Djam Karet's albums: Burning the Hard City, Recollection Harvest, and Suspension & Displacement. I love the epic sweep and the guitar work. But I'm wondering if there are others that folks like better and that I should seek out. I have heard good things about A Night For Baku.

All their albums are great, and other than Collaborator (which sort of continues the semi-ambient approach of Supsension And Displacement), I think they'd all appeal to someone who likes Burning The Hard City and Recollection Harvest. My first DK album was Reflections Of The Firepool. It immediately turned me into a fan, so I reckon that might be a good place to go. But I think it's hard to go wrong regardless of which album you buy next.

Baku and Devouring are both great
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Oh, and as far as "favorites" go, I'd probably give that to the Live At NEARfest deal, just because you can hear my voice on it (listen for the words "Topanga Safari", after the first number).

But musically, my favorites are probably Reflections..., Burning..., and Recollection Harvest. For some reason those are the ones that stand out clearly in my mind.

Yep! Also: Reflections from the Firepool and The New Dark Age.

Also can't recommend Live at Orion enough.

I'm not unbiased, since I saw both nights of shows that were turned into this release, but ... yeah. The original quartet lineup really excited to be playing their 1st gigs outside of California and playing a wide cross section of work. And a great recording.

My favorite is "Live At Orion". For studio "Burning The Hard City" is my favorite, but "The Devouring" is also very good and shows multiple sides of the band.

That was a great show. I miss all the people who used to come out back then.

The Orion show I saw (can't remember if it was the first or second night) was outstanding. I still lived in Richmond at the time and debated going with the long haul up I-95. So glad I made the effort.

What's amazing is that even back then - when more folks used to come out - in order to break even, we needed 110 people over the two nights (in other words, 55 folks per night).

We didn't hit it and the shows lost money!!

and this was the first time the band had ever played outside of California!!!!

For these ears, Reflections.... and ...Baku are their two best studio discs, but that's like picking between German luxury cars, each is really awesome.

That's crazy. I saw them play before they went out there and it was free and there were maybe forty of us, max, but we were all die-hards!

I only have No Commercial Potential and quite like that one.

Seems like I need to get Devouring next.

NCP was their first album (if you don't count Kafka's Breakfast which came out after) and the first one I bought about the time Firepool was coming out

I'm on The Devouring train for sure. It would be a sound next step. It's the one that turned me into a devoted fan.

For some odd reason, I haven't connected with Baku... but I'm not putting that on the album, if that makes any sense. I think it was more about my headspace at the time it came out, and I haven't circled back to it in any serious way.

One of my hands-down favorites is Ascension. There is more acoustic and high weirdness going on, but it is a perfect mix to my ears.

Of the recent releases, I found The Trip very enjoyable, though it is super chill. Still, the immediate predecessor to Suspension & Displacement and Burning the Hard City is Reflections from the Firepool, and you really can't go wrong with it.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world.

Another for Live at Orion. Def. in my Top 5 Live discs of all time.

For the studio stuff, Devouring if you want head-banging riffs (a lot of the Orion performance is from this disc), if you want cinematic soundscapes, I love Baku or Recollection Harvest. If you want Camel-does-a-porn-soundtrack*, go with Regenerator 3017.

    * A joke from Jed from a few years ago that I found frighteningly accurate.

Wow, I'm honored you remember that, because I sure don't! But it does sound about right. I also give a nod to Ascension, though I hadn't mentioned it because I wasn't sure if it was still available. I thought it was a limited release, but I could be wrong.

No recommendation for New Dark Age??!! Wow...I think this one offers a great blend of Djam Karet-ness. My personal favorite though is Burning the Hard City just because it oozes guitar.
