Are those real drums? Did you use a click track? I ask because I have a lot of problems with my tempo/steadiness of locking in on a rhythm. Maybe because when I (attempt to) play classical guitar I use a lot of rubato in my interpretations for good or ill and it has gotten a bit out of control.

No! Those are not real drums. I’m using Pink Noise samples through VSampler. I record to a click track, adjust the key signature and tempos, and then record all the instruments. Then I “play” the drums on the keyboards. Vocals are last.

About the ES-175, I guess it’s a sign of the times in that it’s not very popular anymore. The older ones are better, anyway, IMHO.

Great stuff. Kind of a "Three of a Pefect Pair" vibe. How did you come up with the title "Bumper Pool"? Always interested in the title inspiration for instrumental music.

It's funny you mention KC. Their 80s stuff with the layering and circles, along with 80s music in general, is a big influence.

I've had the main riff for a while and it's a lot of hammer-ons, has a rubbery, bouncy quality to it. And an image of an old bumper pool table I played with at a friend's house when I was a kid just popped into my head when this was coming together, so I went with that.

I rolled the dice and went with the YouTube version and glad I did. I like the image of the car and the stuff floating in air(how'd you do that?). The intro reminded me of Talking Heads but still sounds original and I like it.

I didn't know until recently that the image viewer in Windows has an easy option to create video files from a photo or series of photos by adding music. For a single image you just designate how long it's to be displayed (length of the song in seconds) and you can add things like text, slow zoom, or 3D effects. In this case, I used an old photo my dad took at some Russian auto expo in the early 60s and added a 3D effect of a dust cloud.

The image I used on Fondly is one I took while hiking a couple years ago, and I added a falling snow effect.

Also, Arturia just announced an upgrade to their Pigments software synth, so I downloaded a demo copy and played with it a bit. It is really powerful and hugely configurable. I don't know if I'm going to buy it or not, I'm barely scratching the surface on what i"ve got and learning how to use it. Plus there's a huge amount of VST's out there for free. But there's a half price special until Jan 7th, so $99 for this thing. Here's my demo/test track using it. Nice sounds coming from it, for sure. I think I was channeling Michael Oldfield on this one.

I'm a collector, so I'd probably grab it just to have it. But that isn't exactly cheap. Flip a hundred dollar bill and if it lands Franklin face down, get it.

Hey Matt, I enjoyed the video version. I like what I heard, you've got some good bones here but I feel it needs to be developed more and the intro becomes repetitive so it seems like it goes on too long(I think 1:22 long)before going into a break. Please don't leave this without editing it a bit and polishing it, it's worth it. As I write this I've got the guitars playing in my head.
Also it didn't seem loud enough to me, lacking some punch.
I don't like critiquing other's music with suggestions who post here, it's a fine line between sharing your opinion and what can be perceived as negativity. But I like what I hear so couldn't help myself.

I like to apply a limiter on the stereo out during mixdown(export). My favorite one is free and I think it's fantastic by a highly respected Russian developer. At present until I learn my way around this plug in I've been using a preset(Master 2), but you can experiment and edit the plug in settings to fit your style and liking.
You probably already know all of this, but it never hurts to share our personal experiences, so apologies.
I have some mastering plug ins I've spent good money on, and this free one is better than any of them(plus the cool vintage tube look is awesome!).

It's always fun to take a simple start and see where you can take it, developing a melody, a rhythm, a countermelody, a pad behind it, the whole soundscape. I think this has good bones but it needs to be developed and maybe apply some rhythm changes on the drums when the song morphs. It's a fun concept and I agree with top Cat - it's worth it.

That's all good advice, TC and Bob. Thanks for that, it's always appreciated. I've never written songs until this last year, so it's all a learning process. This one definitely has some rough edges and warts. And the feedback helps.

Thanks for the background and I can definitely relate having issues from a recording and having to compensate, so to hear it happens to others is a relief to hear.
I don't normally like to make too many suggestions when someone posts a piece of music they've worked on, and this thread has been pretty good at just sharing music which is good. So I didn't want to turn it into a Master Class type thing and take the fun element out of what we're doing here and debated even saying or suggest anything.
But I liked what I heard so much, I didn't want it to turn into a one-off and meant to encourage you to make it even better.

Key words are, continue to have fun. With all the crap we all put up in our every day lives, music is the one thing at least for me, that can turn a bad day into a good night.

At least for now, I've cut it some and played with levels a little. Definitely a placeholder at this point, and will re-record it all eventually. But something to work from.

I've been creating and releasing music since 2010. Bandcamp and CDBaby are the main platforms, but CDBaby distribution assures that it's available on pretty much every music site you can think of.

What I do tends to be quite simple in nature with melodies played on Native American-style flutes. The vast majority of the tunes are based around improvsations that I later re-created largely verbatim. I just released my 4th full-length album on November 18 called Autumn Muse. This was around 11 months in the making. It has electric and acoustic 6 and 12-string guitars, physically-modeled bass, and assorted VSTi synths and keys. For drums, it was the first time I used loops from The Loop Loft, which are great because they're done by well-known session drummers. I can proudly say Ryan Gruss, Omar Hakim, Matt Chamberlain, and Aaron Comess all played on my album.

Hey Bruce, good to see you on this thread sharing your music with us.

I just listened to And I Wonder on Bandcamp and think it's so peaceful and beautiful. I love the blending of the Native American flute with guitar and strings.
When I have more time I'll check out some more of the songs..great work you've done here and the artwork on Autumn Muse reminds me a bit of a Moody Blues cover, specifically something from Justin or John Lodge.

I love hearing the acoustic instruments and folk melodies. It's so very organic. I'm only a keys guy so my stuff is going to be more electronic and processed. There's just something fundamental about recording acoustically that I miss. Brings me back to the good old days using a tape deck and overdubs. Love the music Allen.
