just checking out this obscure album from 1980 called Elsewhere and it's pretty darn cool!

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
Big fan here also.
Nice canterbury-esque vibe!
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone
I dig this album as well, and can detect a strong Muffins vibe on a great deal of it. Won't this be reissued on cd shortly?
Didn't I read that this was at last being reissued soon ? On Laser's Edge maybe ?
Great band and music.
Been talking to Joe Rogers for a few years. Still waiting for the multitrack tapes to arrive. Maybe someday...
Has it never been released on CD ?

These guys came up in a Canterbury thread several months ago. I had never heard of them before, and yes, they are damn good. Unfortunately I think that Steve F and Ken G both said they had given up on releasing this.

I have this on vinyl.
While not essential by any means, I really think it's lovely.
Been meaning to buy this for ages.

Indeed. It very gracefully splits the difference between Canterbury and fusion: Canterbury melodies, chord progressions and feel, but real jazz chops in both the soloists and rhythm section when it comes to blowing. In a way, it sounds not so much like what's usually called "fusion" or "Canterbury", so much as jazz played by straightahead guys who really like Uncle Frank and probably Carla Bley. Notice the upright bass - very uncommon at the time in anything rock-oriented.
And I wonder if Kurt Rongey and Bill Pohl heard these guys when they were in high school.

Yes, the upright bass is somethin' else! The keyboardist/pianist is a wiz, too. The title track is very engaging. I agree with calling it "Canterfusion." Well, that's what I was going to call it, anyway.![]()
And these guys were/are from Forth Worth??? TEXAS??? Thats my stomping grounds. I thought I was it. The Jazz stuff sounds just a bit "Bob Newhart-ish" The synth stuff is great!

The "jazz stuff"? Have you read the posts in this thread and can relate to the terms actively applied to this band and their music? You yourself apparently object to the use of a description like "cheesy" in another thread in here, this on the basis of its rhetorical sloppiness - how then does anything by Master Cylinder get to be "jazz stuff"?

Just listened to all three clips.Very nice. Here's hoping it sees the light of day on cd...someday.

Not to defend the comment about Bob Newhartish....but I thought a passage or three were very theme song-ish myself. And that is NOT a bad thing...I LOVE scores a LOT. I didn't find them cheesy. Playful maybe, but certainly not cheesy.
These guys are fantastic, where does one find their work?? They are essential to me, wow.
And master cylindar...the car part or the robot in Felix the Cat, any one know the origin of the name?
I'm a big Bob Newhart fan. so back off man.![]()
Some of the softer horns just reminded me a little of that timeframe. its probably quite contemporary with that show. I am not a big soft Jazz fan, but I did like the synthy parts and definitely some of the drumming was masterful. The first song reminded me of some of the softer Return to Forever stuff, but the melodies were far more prevalent to really be compared to RTF (light as a feather-ish)
Thats a far cry from just calling it cheese. I'm not trying to pick a fight here bro.

The Overture made me think of Zappa.
