Academic book on the Canterbury Scene published

This book has its roots in the Canterbury Sound festival that took place in October 2017. Editors Asya Draganova, Shane Blackman and Andy Bennett have put it together with contributions by writers such as Marcus O'Dair (Robert Wyatt biographer), Phil Howitt (of Facelift Magazine) and myself, other supporters of the scene such as Billie Bottle (a regular of the Mike Westbrook Orchestra whose own albums have featured Dave Sinclair and Jimmy Hastings), Jack Hues (former Wang Chung/Tony Banks vocalist and guitarist), Neil Saunders (whose name has appeared on several releases by Dave Sinclair), the late Rick Chafen (who organised US tours by National Health and many others) and, most importantly perhaps, original contributions by Robert Wyatt, Dave Sinclair and Brian Hopper.

As often with academic books, the retail price is quite high, but ordering from the page linked above with the code "EMERALD30" gives you 30% off regular price. Not sure whether a cheaper physical version or eBook may appear in the future.

A limited number of press review copies are available on request. If you are interested, let me know privately and I will put you in contact with the editors.

Gosh I’m interested, the discount will help. The scene deserves to be more in the limelight, rather than just known by a bunch of us obsessives.

Yep - I am definitely 100% in for Aymeric's English version when that happens but will keep my eye on this. Its roughly $75 USD.

I'm familiar with this press through my academic work. They are considered very respectable and they will probably sell most of these to university libraries. If one of their hardbacks sells in decent numbers, they will likely put out a softcover edition in about a year or two for $30 or $35. That is, after they make sure all the big university libraries with big budgets have already bought it for the $100. Whether there will be sufficient demand for a Canterbury book to warrant this, who knows?

I missed the news that Aymeric’s book was getting a translation, that is superb, I’m definitely in for that one.

Launch of 'The Canterbury Sound in Popular Music: Scene, Identity and Myth'

I work for Canterbury Christ Church and something interesting popped into my inbox (at last) this morning:

Launch of 'The Canterbury Sound in Popular Music: Scene, Identity and Myth' edited by Asya Draganova, Shane Blackman and Andy Bennett. 24th March, 4.00.

    About this Event

We invite you to the book launch of The Canterbury Sound in Popular Music: Scene, Identity and Myth.

This collection published in February 2021 is a unique exploration of the heritage and legacy of the Canterbury Sound: a signature style emerging in the 1960s that draws upon psychedelic music, progressive rock, jazz and pop to capture the real and imagined interactions between people, place and music.

The volume recounts the stories, and explores the significance, of the Canterbury Sound as heritage, ongoing legacy and scene. Originating from the experiences and ethnographic research of the three editors, all of whom have lived and worked in Canterbury, the book brings together reflections, stories, and critical insights from well-known musicians, researchers, DIY archivists and fans to explore the Canterbury Sound as an inter-generational phenomenon and a source of cultural identity. Associated with acts like Caravan, Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers and Gong, this romanticised scene has a special place in popular music culture.

The editors Asya, Shane and Andy will be discussing themes of the book with Dr Sarah Hill, Associate Professor of Popular Music at Oxford University. Sarah has been Co-ordinating Editor of the journal Popular Music since 2012, and Chair of the UK and Ireland branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music since 2016. Her research to date has largely focused on issues of identity and popular music, particularly in Welsh-language culture, and in the historiography of popular music.

The three editors and the discussion lead will also be joined by many of the contributors to the collection who identify with the concept of the Canterbury Sound in a range of different ways. Some of the confirmed authors who will take part in the discussion include Brian Hopper (Wilde Flowers/Soft Machine), Professor Murray Smith (University of Kent), Dr Mengyao Jiang (Qingdao University), Jack Hues, members of Lapis Lazuli and many more.
