Hey, a bargain is a bargain... Ten Union Yesshows taken from boots and slapped on CDs are worth $72, or maybe even $100, to me. The fact that they are on CD means I can listen on the hi-fi or in the car, as opposed to flacs listenable only on the computer, and that is worth it, to me. The packaging and sundries are silly.

You make a good point though about the 1972 copies of the Progeny LPs (or of anything Yes related, really...). I forget how many copies of Union 30 there are supposed to be, but it is obviously too many. IMHO had they limited these things to 1000 or so, we probably wouldn't be getting these fire-sale bargains 2-3 years after release.

Do you seriously mean you've never turned flac files into WAV or AIF files and burned them onto a CD?
    Just curious.
If some of the money did go to the artists, preferrably ALL surviving members who performed on them rather than just one or two, I too would advocate buying the commercially available version (not sure I'd call this 'official') as opposed to getting the same recordings for free on specialised forums or websites. A little care in making the audio and video sound and/or look better would also help jump the gun.

That is all true. Theoretically, some of the money from this is going to the artists, which would be a good thing. It has been reported that all 8 Yesmen are on board with the release, although I can't recall any of them promoting it, bar maybe Wakeman. The current band and management have also made clear that they're fine with fans getting live recordings for free online.

Zero care has gone into making this release. I think to buy this release is to encourage more shit releases. As fans, we hurt ourselves when we put up with shoddy releases and buy them anyway.

The official Yes FB page endorsed this release (see post 79). I conclude from that fact that everyone was paid, even if perhaps they didn't have veto power over the release. No one associated with the band has ever spoken a word against it AFAIK.

So there is no moral issue here. If anyone doesn't like "shit releases" they can take it up with the band. As for me, I'm happy to pay ~$70 rather than to burn a pile of CDRs. YMMV.

There's no point taking something up with people who didn't have veto power.

Before my last car was totaled 5 years ago, I played CD quality and Hi-Res FLACs, along with a variety of lossy formats. Using a fiio player plugged into the car stereo's auxiliary jack. The Fiio would keep playing album after album after album. Without me having to divert my attention from the road to mess with it. I can't remember the last time I burned a CD of any king. But it may be close to a decade.

Well the big Union 30 box arrived today. I tried to add some photos but they don't seem to be uploading correctly... The flight case is surprisingly rugged. You probably could put this in checked baggage on your next flight and it would survive the ordeal intact. Silly, totally unnecessary, but also kind of cool for what it is.

And for the music... First up, Pensacola. Note this is one of my favorite Yesshows of all time, thanks to the downloadable AUD boot that I have listened to many times over the last several years. The energy level is incredible, as high as 1972. And you get the best of 1970s and 1980s Yes on it, for a killer 3-hour show.

The big question is whether this is just the boot slapped onto 3 CDs. The short answer is sort-of yes. But Gonzo have in fact done some work on it. I ripped the first CD and compared YinD and HotS. The drums are the most noticeable difference. They are more clearly defined on the Gonzo release, very "thwacky". The bass has more oomph as well. Not much difference on the higher frequencies. And one amusing thing is that they removed the fan bickering from Rhythm of Love and City of Love. I actually always kind of enjoyed that.

Overall verdict: Gonzo have slightly improved this show from a very listenable B- to something that could be considered a B.

^^ I have heard that show before, but not for years. What's the fan bickering you speak of?

A couple guys arguing about whether Jon belongs in the band or not was picked up by the mic.

It's legit, Ayling holds a grudge against Daniel (Earnshaw).

I just checked my Union 30 box: #2213. So I'm guessing maybe 2500? Actually mine is the first one I've seen above 2000. There are some folks over on Hoffman comparing #s and they are all in the 1800 and 1900s.

Have you given any of the shows a listen yet?

Bought the separate releases of three concerts and started to listen to the Pensacola one and ... holly crap, what a garbage recording this is. I have thrown out a better sounding bootlegs to garbage than this. Mainly for the lack of time of the listening time to the original recordings of the many albums bought over few years. Perhaps my fault was starting from the DVD and trying to watch the concert? At least I thought that the audio gotta be much better, but was wrong again. Is it even worth checking the other two shows I have - Madison Square Garden and McNichols Sports Arena?

^^^ As I mentioned earlier in the thread, IMHO Pensacola is possibly the best performance of the tour that has been recorded. The excitement and energy are at 1972 levels. And it has the best setlist! So hold on to it and see if you warm to it after a few listens. Denver is a soundboard I think so more clarity and detail are evident in the recording. But, IMO, a lower energy show than Pensacola.

We did warn you! This was a garbage release by Rob Ayling and Brian Lane, who do garbage releases.

Thanks, possibly will warm up to it eventually, although, it is a low priority for me and will be for some time to come. Anyway, I will not throw it away since I paid for it. Just surprised it was released at all and they charged money for it, and as official Yes release

Yeah, missed it though. This just shows you not slack off and read all the threads. Did not expect though Yes would even release something like this under its name.

Most releases of Yes's music are not by Yes, if you see what I mean. Yes have just released Mirror to the Sky, but they do not have control over material from when they were signed to various other labels or deals. Warner controls most of their back catalogue. Larry Magid appears to have the rights to recordings from the Union tour.

This beastly thing is now on clearance rate at 100 bucks + 20 shipping (for U.S. customers). The sloppy quality may be more bearable at that price for some people.

I was going to jump on that before I saw the shipping to Canada is $65. That's a bit to rich for me.
