This a video of Caravan, led by Pye Hastings, performing on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' in 1973 on the BBC. He can be seen using the Fender XII, starting from 0:25 in the video. It is important to note that the inside of the album 'For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night' also shows Pye with the instrument and that he used it for recording some of the tracks on the album.

It has been said that when Pye asked Terry King (Caravan's Manager) for a Fender Strat, he replied "Why do you need another Fender guitar? You already have one.". Pye explained that he wanted a 6-string guitar too, and Terry advised him to remove six strings from his original Fender XII, which he did.
makes you wonder about those group managers back then.

Well I never. That song title make perfect sense now you put the % on the end, I'd always assumed it was a made up nonsense word!

The lyrics, too - "Wish that I could be you...", as in "you're getting 25% of our earnings, when I'm only getting 19, yet I write most of our songs and you're not really doing that much, are you ?"

See also: Queen's scathing 'Death On Two Legs'.

The only live footage of Caravan I've seen from the 70s with the original line-up is for Beat Club.

I think the later 'The Dog The Dog...' promo (shown on Old Grey Whistle Test) was mimed. Other than that, I've seen nothing.

Nice stuff. I didn't know that Richard Sinclair was such an active and talented bass player.

^Have you ever listened to the Hatfield and the North albums? Richard's playing is really tricky and superb.

Agreed Alberto. His playing, tone, grooves, etc was a perfect match with Pip and they created a frighteningly great and tight rhythm section. Beautiful player and he makes it look effortless. Voice doesn't exactly sucketh, either!

What awesome footage! Thank you so much for posting this. I'm not familiar with this lineup but this has me wanting to listen to Waterloo Lily more. Love the way Pye phrases his notes in the jams.

I have a habit of letting the lyrics wash over me without really listening to them!

It find it really helps when listening to anything involving Neal Morse, I have no idea what the new Transatlantic album is about, even after listening to it several times.
