Bass Icon Jeff Berlin Launches GoFundMe Campaign For New Tribute Album To Legendary Jack Bruce

Nashville, TN - Bass icon Jeff Berlin has launched a GoFundMe Campaign for a new tribute album to legendary Jack Bruce titled “Jack Songs - An All-Star Tribute To Jack Bruce”! Jack Bruce, best known for his work with classic rock legends Cream, as well as his critically acclaimed solo work, passed away in 2014. Jeff Berlin, who has been called “the greatest bass player in the world”, was a personal friend of Jack's and wanted to record Jack's songs in remembrance of how Jack helped Jeff to find his own musical path.

Says Jeff, “Recording the music of Jack Bruce has been the most emotional recording project of my career. Jack was the greatest musical influence I ever had. In the center of his music were these strange and wonderful bass lines weaving in and out of the key, reaching for resolutions and finding them, again, and again. Jack's playing was a living evolving improvisation.

'Jack Songs' isn't a cover CD, not in the literal sense. Except for a couple of tunes from his Cream period (arranged in ways that should surprise people) most of the songs on this CD come from other periods in Jack's musical life before and after Cream. Jack's solo career represented a multitude of musical styles. This recording will be a new revamp of some of those songs, some of the best music that I heard from one of the greatest musicians of the last fifty years.”

    Guest performers are:

    1. Alex Lifeson
    2. Sammy Hagar
    3. Tony Levin
    4. Billy Sheehan
    5. Brian Auger
    6. Scott Henderson
    7. Eric Johnson
    8. Nathan East
    9. Gary Husband
    10. Mark King
    11. Geddy Lee
    12. Ron Carter
    13. Albert Lee
    14. Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal
    15. Marcus Miller
    16. Michael League
    17. Alex Ligertwood

Guest list is still being expanded.

JACK BRUCE, BASSIST FOR THE ICONIC BAND CREAM, ONCE DESCRIBED JEFF BERLIN AS THE “THE BEST BASS PLAYER I’VE EVER HEARD.”

For over 40 years, he has stood as one of the most innovative electric bassists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Known for his one-of-a-kind tone, jaw dropping technique and highly advanced harmonic approaches to the bass, Jeff has been one of the major figures in firmly establishing the electric bass as a solo instrument well deserving of its own distinct place in modern music.

Jeff’s recording and performance credits include a who’s who of jazz and rock. They include: Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth, Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Yes, Frank Zappa, Patrick Moraz and many more.

Yeah, it's been six years since the original pledge for this album. I guess Holdsworths contributions weren't recorded

Looks like none of the originals will be on there.

I donated the first time around and again this time. Hoping it will be finished this year. I play in a Bay Area Cream tribute band, Fresh Cream.

Jeff said the folks who donated the second time around should have the CD shipped this week. Very exciting.

The original Pledgers got this mail last week:

    Hi All,

Many of you have been wondering what to expect now that the Jeff Berlin Jack Bruce project is complete and released.
Please read the letter below explaining the situation we have faced for a number of years now since PledgeMusic went bankrupt.
We are offering all those who pledged the high res download (96kHz24Bit) tracks from the album along with artwork.
We have no other recourse because we received zero funds from Pledge and as we point out below, the cost of shipping to over 500 Pledgers is far too prohibitive for us to fulfill. So this is our small way of saying thank you.
We know it’s not what many of you Pledged and should have received but again, because we received no money from Pledge whatsosever we cannot absorb the huge costs of shipping cds domestically and internationally along with any other merchandise you may have ordered.
It’s an ugly situation but we hope you can accept this as our waying of trying to make things “right”; even though there is nothing right about the PledgeMusic debacle for you or us.
You will receive a dropbox link to these files on Saturday September 9th.

    Dear Pledge Fans,

As you most likely know PledgeMusic went bankrupt, and we did not receive any funds from them. Not a dime. Like many artists, we were denied any claims or ways of recouping any of the money fans pledge to us. PledgeMusic was a British company, and our legal recourse was blocked by the laws of the UK. It would have taken us years to get possibly pennies on the dollar. For obvious reasons, we did not pursue this.

Criminal is an understatement. Terrible for us and terrible for you, the fans who supported us initially in this endeavor. It is and was an ugly situation that took us totally by surprise.

Since we did not receive any of those pledged funds, we are not able to ship cds since we have no money from Pledge to offset those costs. We are not happy about this but there is little recourse we have. This recording was entirely financed in the end by us and again without the help of Pledge. We (all of us) were, in all honesty, defrauded of many thousands of dollars. Money that we had hoped would offset the recording and fulfillment fees. It did not.

As a result, we can only offer the 96kHz 24bit high-res files or MP3s of the entire record with complete artwork. We’re sure that you can appreciate that the shipping costs alone would cost us, out of pocket, thousands, and thousands of dollars. Money that we do not have.

We’re sorry that it came to this but there is little we can do.

    Thank you.

I got the email with the download. I’m not doing that. I’m waiting for the CD to arrive. Nice of them to do that for those of us who pledged the first go around. I also pledged the second campaign. Looking forward to the CD.

Last December Jeff Berlin sold the CD with 50% discount. I finally made my offer and had luck the package was shipped as gift, so I hadn't to pay VAT twice.
All in all I think Jeff did a great job. Yes, I was disappointed when the first pledge failed, especially because I would have loved hearing Jeff with Holdsworth again. But this is a fine collection of songs in which compositions of Bruce are intergrated in a cleaver way. So no covers as such. Only the two last tracks are written by Berlin, the second with Pete Brown.

I did not know the back story on this. I just heard clips on iTunes... I like'd it! Amazon has it for $10 plus shipping, I bought it from Jeff's site for the same. Looking forward to it!
