Probably more. Can't think of them now
Any "Guitar Geek" needs to be up on Ronnie Montrose.
Absolutely start with Open Fire. It's a desert island album for me, one of maybe five or six that always do "it" for me.
Here it is in full (with, alas, ads between tracks):
From there, you can explore. My other faorites include the first Gamma album (his group after Montrose) and his work with the Edgar Winter Group - see if you can find a decent boot; his solo on "Frankenstein" is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.
I'm given to understand that they still put on a pretty good show. I saw a video of them sharing the stage (literally, down the middle) with Earth Wind and Fire and it was really good.

Seen many greats as part of a band, but going to see a guitar player in concert

Nobody's mentioned John Martyn or Neil Young yet. So I shall.
That was on Geddy's side of the stage, and they were dryers, actually, I think. As I recall, he started using some sort of virtual direct inject bass gizmo, that basically did away with the need for a conventional amp set up. He said he felt like his side of the stage was "a bit too empty", so first he had the fridge on one tour, then he had the washing machines on the next tour. As I recall, every so often, you'd see someone run out onstage and put coins in the washing machines. Then at the end of the show, when they came out for the encore, a bunch of towels were pulled from the dryers, which the band used to towel off while waving at the audience, before beginning the encore.
Then, it escalated from there, he added a snack machine, and I think at some point someone told me he had like a grill or something onstage by the time of the last tour.
Just remembered I saw these guitar players at G3 in 2001.
John Petrucci
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Mike Kenealy (he shredded too).
At the time I wasn't into shreddy guitar. I'm still not into shred but I like some technical thrash and speed.
