According to every online dictionary I could find, the definition of "album" is pretty much the following:

"A collection of recordings issued as a single item on CD, record, or another medium"

I have always understood album to mean this. It refers to collection, not the media it is delivered on.

An album can also be a wedding album of pictures. Back in the 60's when you got the new Beatles album it wasn't a cassette or eight track, it was a twelve inch vinyl record. Everything is so watered down that even prog isn't progressive rock anymore, it's whatever anyone wants to make up anymore.

An album is a collections of songs. I didn't realize it was media-specific.

Somebody better tell the Michael Jackson estate that all those tens of millions of "album" sales don't count, because most of them were not on vinyl.

    What a silly discussion.

I realize you're not one to consult with dictionaries, though.

I haven't listened to any albums today, yet, but I did try. I got a Thinking Plague album from the passing of our fellow PE member. Unfortunately, I got about ten seconds into it.

I did also get Ponty's "King Kong," which is very good.

The lesson is that definitions change over time. LPs themselves wouldn't fit the original definition of a record "album," which referred to sets of 78 rpm discs collected into a book. The definition changed to accommodate the new format, and today it's even used to refer to digital-only releases that have no physical form.

In the 90s through mid 2000s, they had to be called "CDs." Using any other terminology would at the very least, illicit inquisitive looks. It wasn't until Apple started iTunes the word "album" came back into vogue. Now back to our regularly scheduled discussion.

No, we need at least three more pages. It is PE, after all. There's a well-established reputation of anal retention to uphold.
