I blame Wynton, what was the question?

I saw Cavalcade on a couple of year-end lists and I've been listening. It hasn't sunk in but it feels like something that could. My first listen it just seemed like Mars Volta with less character, but second time through I started hearing a lot more distinct sounds and styles. I'll keep chipping away at this one; I'd love to get enthusiastic about a younger band.

Good call on getting those Dry Cleaning tickets. I tried to pull the trigger yesterday, and it only allowed me to select one ticket. I assumed that something was wrong with the web site. Tried again today, and now online tickets are no longer available. Went back to the main page....sold out. Three months in advance. You snooze, you lose. Better order my Black Midi tickets before they get sold out too!

Just saw Dry Cleaning a few days ago in Bristol, it was ok but slightly underwhelming, I think the best way to listen to them is still at home where you can catch all the nuance of the vocals.

P.S. in accordance with the thread title- I met Geordie of Black Midi in the audience of the Van Der Graaf Generator London gig! Turns out he is a fan...
What a nice young lad, had a small chat with him in the intermission.
Wow, that's awesome. Sounds like a great couple of nights! I'm still going to see Dry Cleaning in a couple of months. It's at a pretty small venue, so hopefully the acoustics will be good. Good to know that such a talented, young musician is a nice lad with taste.

A new album announced - Hellfire, due July 15th - and a new video:
Plus an extensive tour
Of course the Boston gig is while I'm in England

Good, and it's funny to hear Geordie's halfway impersonation - although rather than sounding like Don's uncle's "fine big Beef Heart," it sounds more like a Bee Fart.
Also, Morgan is incapable of playing anywhere but in the pocket, so they don't quite get that falling-down-the-stairs rhythmic feel.
Oh yes! Black Midi plays next sunday at Flow Festival in Helsinki. They are the last moment addition and I got really lucky as the sunday is the only day I have ticket for the festival.

I'd dipped a toe a few times with these guys and never connected, but they're getting enough word-of-mouth that I bought a CD copy of Hellfire last time I was at the local shop. Don't know what the last few were like but this one has been a significant grower each time I've listened to it. Even for a seasoned prog-rock fan it's dense and noisy and the arrangements turn on a dime, and it can get pretty now and then when it wants to. When I'd heard them previously I remember thinking "blander Mars Volta" but Black Midi have an edge and a sense of meanness that MV didn't, especially in the lyrics. The vocal style is also growing on me -- the first time I listened to them I remember thinking "why do all these proggy post-punk bands have to have a vocalist ranting non sequiturs like Pere Ubu" but time has proven that to be an unfair assessment of what he's doing.

The great thing about this band, is that if you connect, you really connect. I think that they are doing some of the freshest, most original music out there. Cavalcade was my top album of last year, and Hellfire is the front runner this year, so what do you guys know, lol?

Hellfire caught my attention....I enjoyed this album much more than Cavalcade.
Interesting. I think Cavalcade and Hellfire are about equal. What would you say is better about Hellfire?
