Though some songs are heavily edited in the film and 'Me And Sarah Jane' is one.
That makes sense. I was at the 1981 tour and I thought there was more than a nod to their progressive rock history. I'm still excited to see the DVD (they're the medley) and Afterglow, and material for Duke (Duchess). I've really grown to fully appreciate Duke. It's a wonderful album. I also remember the light show and Phil singing for The Cage.

There is almost a total lack of balance with their progressive rock days. A medley with the Cage, The Cinema Show and Slipperman. There is also Afterglow (which I adore). I thought in 81 there was a lot more pre-Wind material but oh well. It includes the wonderful Duchess. I'll skip Misunderstanding but pretty well listen to everything else
I found the original VHS a few months or a year ago. The flying head Hi-Fi Stereo audio track sounds better than the standard audio track of DVD video. I agree listening to Misunderstanding would be some kind of mistake.

Actually, I just remembered that a version of 'Firth Of Fifth' on one of their 12" singles ('That's All') was recorded on this 1981 tour. Not sure if that ever made it to CD.

Three Sides Live DVD - We'll not really living up to my expectations. Watching it I realized I really don't like Abacab so all these tunes were a waste. There is a lot of interview footage where the band explains why they're no long a prog band and that Abacab encapsulates their new sound. I would much prefer to see the band just play. Even if I don't like much of the music on the DVD, Genesis were always very strong musicians and Phil was on top of his vocals. The Cage Medley was excellent but called for more extensions of the songs. Afterglow was excellent as was Duchess. I wish they played more of their 70s material that actually appeared live. I don't think this will get regular rotation at Chez Mozo.

There is a funny radio interview where the interviewee asks if Gabriel would come back to the band (lol). Phil seem nonplused, and said, I actually play with Peter now but there is definitely no chance he would return to Genesis.

^^ Yeah, the spliced interview footage is an annoyance, but such was the style at the time with home videos. Should have been made separate on the DVD. I think Dodo and Abacab were really strong tracks live myself, but I know they aren't to everybody's taste. No Reply and Sarah Jane both sounded stronger on the record IMO, especially since they gut Sarah Jane so much. Cage medley has that awesome Slippermen section played at double (or triple?) speed; double drums sound spectacular there. Afterglow could sometimes be made a bit too 'big' IMO, although I realize it had a certain power with the lights and fog. I think I prefer it on record with the more romantic-sounding ending.

I have a Paul McCartney DVD which has the same problem.

The Seconds Out version was definitive, IMHO. Collins' voice had more fragility then, which suited a song like this well. And funnily enough, I thought the 2007 version returned to that, a little.

I was told elsewhere- similar has been posted on the Hoffman forum- that unused footage shot on this 1981 tour actually still exists, but nothing was done with it for the DVD/Blu-ray release. So that'll probably be that.

70s Genesis is very poorly represented on DVD, sadly. A lot of the material only appeared officially on those SACD/DVD releases and not necessarily in optimum sources, either.

I watch half of it. I'm not sure why I don't like Abacb and Do Do. I guess I'm a bit of a dinosaur. I had such high expectations of this DVD but it didn't meet my expectations. It was a treat hearing Afterglow and the medley. My interest in Genesis ends of Duke (to which I was a latecomer). I did really enjoy Dutchess. All and all, I'm glad I picked up the DVD and may use the song feature to hand pick songs I liked.

It's a CD/DVD package. Very sad to watch with David recently dying. I felt the same when I watched
the Jeff Beck documentary, Still On The Run, a few nights ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jihMIE7cKTg

Tonight - DVD - Marillion - Live in Montreal. It's 3 discs but somehow I'm missing disc 2!! Recorded live in Montreal at one of the weekends in 2009. I was there!
Disc 1 - The King Of Sunset Town, Easter, The Uninvited Guest, Season's End, Holiday Girl, Berlin, After Me, Hooks in You, The Space, The Bell And The Sea, The Release, The Man From Marzipan, Essence, Asylum Satellite #1, Whatever is Wrong With You, and Happiness is the Road.

It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Steve Hogarth was so charismatic and Steve Rothery was stunning. My buddy and I had seats in the balcony. I'm pissed I lost disc two.

This will be accompanied by some fine Blonde hash and a few munches.

Rapid Fire Rob - thanks for the link to the Jeff Beck documentary and of course David's death impacted on your viewing of his show.

    I was too! And 2011, 2013, and 2015.

For those reading this thread, I'm doing to same routine. Work my butt off during the week and then relaxing with a Prog DVD and some fine hash! .

Last week, I watched the second disc of Floyd live from the 1980s (Pulse).

Tonight, Transatlantic Live in Europe - Mosre, Stolt, Trewaris, Porney - 2 DVD Set.

Deal With The Devil, My New World, We All Need Some Light, Suite Charlotte Pike, Stranger In Your Soul, All Of The Above. It has a bonus track of Shine On Your Crazy Diamonds,

I'll try to watch both DVDs but after smoking and a long work week, I usually doze off my 10:30 ish.

What about you? Any DVD's on your player this weekend?

I only made it through the first DVD for the Transatlantic Set. I was struck by the youth of the band - this was 21 years ago. I actually prefer Roine's vocals but the music was really well done by all. I liked it quite a bit.

Saw Translatlantic during Nearfest 2000 and although I bought the debut I never really warmed up for the music; it's good, but not quite the prog I prefer (anymore).

At this point in this thread I have the feeling I'm repeating myself, because yesterday-evening, after watching the last episodes of The Offer (great series about the making of The Godfather) I played Live In Athens from Archive again. Can't get enough of that performance.

Well I just got my copy of The Traveler in the mail this week & along with it I ordered his "Static Live" Blu-Ray which I'll be watching this evening. Just after I watch Rael's Relayer doc that is.

The Moody Blues- A Night At Red Rocks; this was a big thing in the US at the time, I think? It's a good show with most of their better-known tracks. Some of the then-new songs from the Keys To The Kingdom album aren't that great though.

The DVD unfortunately does not contain 'Legend Of A Mind' (the full set on CD does).

Do you mean the boxes? Did the material vary between the SACD and regular-CD versions? I didn't think so.

No, the SACD's and CD's indeed contain the same material, but the DVD's did have a lot of extra's, incl. interviews and live-stuff. I guess he meant to say that.
