OK my top 12, but impossible to prioritize these any further than "they are in the group". Yes, there are more than 12, because there are. No, I expluded bands that tap more into the jazz realm, but are still prog, like Weather Report and McLaughlin and such, though I did include Return to Forever, because it's my list. Of course, TMMV, and it will, but these albus were all influential to me. Maybe not your best, but I played then to death, more than others by the same group, and that's what counts. And of course there are bands that aren't my cup of tea that will definitely be on your list, like Rush and such, and others that are amazing but don't quite step into my "best" list. So be it.

Yes - Close to the Edge
    ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Renaissance - Live at Carnegie Hall (yes, live albums count in my list)
Tull - Thick as a Brick
Gentle Giant - Playing The Fool (another live one)
    King Crimson - Red
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
    Nektar - Remember the Future
IQ - The Road of Bones
Alan Parsons - Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Edgar Allen Poe
Big Big Train - English Electric pt1
    Brand X - Moroccan Roll
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
    Crack The Sky - Live
    Echolyn - As The World
Flower Kings - Stardust We Are
Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All
    Happy The Man - Live
    Kansas - Song for America
    Kevin Gilbert - Thud
    Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nice list - although I don't think there are many people who would chose Kobaia to represent Magma in it.

Can't Magma be represented by the Könzert Zünd box?

    It's my favorite.

It really is just a terrific weird French jazz-rock album.

I have to be in the right head for the full klingon opera chanting albums.
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone

Glad to see PFM, but Per un Amico or Storia, or L'isola di niente are more deserving than Cook.

And As far as prog-metal goes, Pain of Salvation has at least 3 albums I'd place higher than any DT album.

All the above is just my opinion, of course.

I said the above in post #14, I might as well 'put my money where my mouth is', so to speak.

My top twelve, no particular order:

Yes - Close to the Edge
    Genesis - The Lamb
    PFM - Per un Amico
    Thinking Plague - In Extremis
    Magma - K.A.
Banco - Io Sono Nato Libero
Gentle Giant - In a Glass House
Deus ex Machina - Equilibrismo da Insofferenza
    Eskaton - 4 Visions
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
    Anglagard - Hybris
    Area - Crac!

Although, the following 11 albums could also make my list: Univers Zero - Clivages, VDGG - Pawn Hearts, After Crying - Megalázottak És Megszomorítottak, Henry Cow - Western Culture, Il Balletto di Bronzo - YS, Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane, Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra, IQ - Subteranea, Renaissance - Ashes Burning, ELP - Tarkus

It is an enjoyable exercise to put one of these lists together every 2-3 years for PE. I wonder how different this is from the last time I did this? Note these are just personal favorites; I understand there are many albums that are more influential and impactful. Also I tried to be broad in the definition of "prog" including jazz rock/fusion/blues rock. But there is a progressive slant to all of them. I excluded pure jazz artists who I love and who would have albums on a universal top 12 list for me (e.g., Coltrane), same with classical (Bach, Shostakovich), or pop-rock (Beatles).

    1. MILES DAVIS: Bitches Brew
    2. YES: Tales from Topographic Oceans
    3. MAGMA: K.A.

    6. CAN: Tago Mago
    7. NEU!: Neu '75.
    8. CHICK COREA: Return to Forever
    9. COLOSSEUM: Live
    10. VDGG: Godbluff
    11. MAHAVISHNU: Apocalypse
