New Book: Van der Graaf Generator in the 1970s

New book by Steve Pilkington available from Burning Shed here.

Wondering if I should spring for it. I already have "The Book" among others - has anybody read this new one or have any thoughts or info? Thanks.

Haven't read it yet but I'm looking forward to it. Steve is a good writer and he was granted access to Guy Evans and Hugh Banton for quotes/information for this release. Jim Christopulos, the author of that other mighty VDGG tome, shared this release info on his social media, so that's a pretty solid endorsement IMO.

Thanks, good to know. I guess I'll spring for it.

Hadn't heard about the new book at all but have just ordered it, and perhaps it will arrive by December 23 (the release date in the UK). The 1970s were the years I am most interested in, covering the first two periods of this great band.

Edit: Closer reading of the blurb shows the author of this book, Steve Pilkington, has written several 'On Track' books, which go through an artist's work track by track. I wonder if this book will be the same, as it is published by SonicBond (as are the other 'On Track' books). I would still order it (the Gong track-by-track book was very good), but would prefer a narrative of the band rather than the piece-by-piece approach offered by 'On Track'. Time will tell. If it is an 'On Track' book, then it is a bit disingenuous not to market it as such.

Steve used to contribute here many years back as The Silent Man, he is a very good writer, and I think the concept behind this series is more narrative based than track by track.

Hey here's a clip of Steve Pilkington talking about his favorite band on a British TV game show!

Super short - watch it for the reaction!

Well, being afraid of punitive custom taxes (since Brexit) and the fact that I already have Chris' The Book and this new book doesn't stretch into the XXIst 9, I have little use for it. However, without Brexit, I might have gone for it.

I will ask my local Waterstones bookshop if they can have it, you never know.

He looks like a man who could write an excellent book about VDGG

The book arrived today and thankfully it is a narrative. These types of book encourage me to revisit the various albums and this is no exception, so it is great to have the Charisma Years boxset to dip into. Interestingly, Pilkington's book refers to a BBC session (August 2 1970) at which 'Whatever Would Robert Have Said', 'Killer' and 'Squid 1/Squid 2/Octopus' was recorded. These three tracks are in neither the Charisma boxset nor 'After The Flood (At The BBC 1968 - 1977)'. Perhaps the tapes have been lost.

I have to wait till February to have mine (from Amazon.ca) since the shipping from Burning Shed is atrociously high for me
